The novel A Rose for Emily is one of the early works of William Faulkner,a famous American southern writer who has won The Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950.Spatial narrative theory analyzes and summarizes the spatial characteristics of modern and postmodern novels, showing the narrative characteristics of the works that the time is disrupted and suspended, and the space is extended indefinitely. This paper intends to interpret A Rose for Emily from the perspective of spatial narrative theory, and analyze the geological space, social space and text space in the novel,so as to reveal the important role of spatial structure in creating atmosphere and promoting narrative process,in order to better grasp the spatial metaphors in Faulkner’s novels. 展开更多

Trauma theory has recently become a research hotspot in the academic circle. It not only takes root in the field of psychology but deepens its influence in other humanities and social sciences, such as literature, sociology, history, anthropology, etc.,providing a richer theoretical perspective for interdisciplinary research. In this paper, based on the theory of trauma, the author conducted an analysis on A Rose for Emily from Faulkner-who tacitly expressed his reverence to the southern homeland through depictions of characters, with the emphasis on the protagonist who suffered a series of social, family changes exacerbating the trauma symptoms, and presents different degrees of restoration and stray phenomenon,so as to interpret the protagonist’s choice of life and tragic fate. 展开更多

It is concluded that Emily has developed a particularly strong desire for controlling and personal awareness under the social deprivation by her father for about thirty years, contributing to her twisted acknowledgement of her relationship with Homer, which are later triggered off when Homer refuses to marry her, finally into the seemingly inconceivable ending that Emily kills him and spends the rest forty years of her life with the decomposing corpse of her beloved one's. 展开更多
