National Free Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) HIV/AIDS Treatment Program had been carried out for more than 5 years, treating 9267 cases accumulately by 2009. We report the 3-year outcome on CD4+ lymphocyte count of 807 cases of HIV/AIDS enrolled in the National Free TCM HIV/AIDS Treatment Pro- gram, the CD4+ lymphocyte count were measured every 6 month at 7 time points (0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 month). The results showed that the overall CD4+ ly mphocyte count maintained stable at the 6th month and the 12th month, declined significantly at the 18th month, 24th month and 30th month, then elevated to the pre-treatment level at the 36th month. Patients with pre-treatment CD4+ lymphocyte count level 350/mm3 had CD4+ lymphocyte count declined significantly after all visits. In summary, combined treatment of Chinese herbal medicine and conventional therapy on HIV/AIDS suggested promising effect, but more evidences from larger, rigorous designed studies still needed to support the affirmative effect of TCM in the future. 展开更多

The mortality rate associated with HIV/AIDS has decreased dramatically after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). However, issues such as viral reservoirs, drug resistance and side effects have led to a significant crisis in the management of HIV/AIDS. It has become evident that HAART does not offer a complete solution to the problem. Therefore, additional and alternative therapeutic strategies urgently need to be explored. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the mainstays of complementary and alternative medicine, and its use has aroused increasing attention. This paper reviews the recent progress in the use of TCM, from single herbs, herbal ingredients, compound Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and medical care, for the treatment of HIV/AIDS in China. We also review evaluation systems that assess the efficacy of TCM. 展开更多

SINCE the first case of AIDS was found in the United States in June 1981, AIDS patients and persons infected with HIV have reached 17.41 million in the world. Among the more than four million AIDS patients, over two million have died. Currently, China has 1,435 patients infected with HIV. AIDS is a serious threat to health and the development of social economy, especially to women and children. Since there is still no effective cure for AIDS the death rate of AIDS patients is nearly 100 percent, many countries are trying to find medicines to combat this disease. Chinese doctors and researchers have made some progress in treating AIDS with traditional Chinese medicine. After numerous selections 展开更多

Objective:To explore the regularity and characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine decoction for the treatment of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome(AIDS)Methods:CNKI,VIP,CBM,Wanfang database and Pubmed were searched to identify potentially eligible studies on clinical observation of Chinese medicine for AIDS.Association rules and hierarchical cluster analysis were conducted. Results:It found that the high-frequency drugs were licorice, ginseng, astragalus and Scutellaria baicalensis, which accounted for more than 56.17%of the total frequency, and the most common combination of drugs was found based on association rules between high-frequency drugs.According to the meridian, the drugs associated with the spleen meridian were used most, followed by the drugs associated with lung, heart, stomach, liver and kidney meridian, which accounted for 61.12%of the total frequency of drugs associated with meridian. Conclusion:The etiology and pathogenesis of AIDS mainly include deficiency of lung and spleen qi,deficiency of liver and kidney, and yin deficiency. It has an important value for the treatment of AIDS with traditional Chinese medicine. 展开更多

Substantial progress has been made in China in using traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)to treat acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS).Our objective was to review the latest developments in TCM treatment of AIDS in China between 2004 and 2014.We reviewed the content of original articles investigating the efficacy and safety of TCM for treating AIDS published in Chinese and English language journals.Relevant references from 2004 to 2014 were found using PubMed and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database. We found that TCM has been widely used for treating AIDS and its complications in China. The number of TCM studies has increased, which indicates efficacy and safety.Measures of efficacy in the reviewed articles included the alleviation of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-related signs and symptoms, improvements in quality of life, improvements in long-term survival, counteraction of the adverse side effects of antiviral drugs, promotion of immune reconstitution, and improvement of laboratory results. In sum,the literature indicates that TCM is safe.TCM plays an important role in the treatment of AIDS.Some studies have attempted to measure the efficacy and safety of TCM for treating AIDS,but more evidence is needed. Therefore, more research on this topic is required in the future. 展开更多

This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by observing the changes in CD4 T-lymphocyte cell count of 110 cases with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) treated continuously with TCM for 84 months. Information of 110 HIV/AIDS patients from 19 provinces and cities treated with TCM from 2004 to 2013 was collected. Changes in the indexes of CD4 counts ( ~〈 200, 201-350, 351-500 and 〉 500 cells/mm3) at five time points (0, 12, 36, 60 and 84 months) and different treatments [TCM and TCM plus antiretroviral therapy (ART)] were compared. Repeated measures test indicated no interaction between group and time (P 〉 0.05). Degrees of increasing and decreasing CD4 count of the two groups at four different frames were statistically significant compared with the baseline. The CD4 count between the two groups was not statistically significant. For CD4 count of ~〈 200 cells/ram3, the mean CD4 count changes were 21 and 28 cells/mm3 per year for the TCM group and TCM plus ART group, respectively. For CD4 count of 201-350 celis/mm3, the mean CD4 count changes were 6 and 25 cells/mm3 per year for the TCM group and TCM plus ART group, respectively. For CD4 count of 351 500 cells/mm3, the mean CD4 count changes were 13 and -7 cells/mm3 per year for the TCM group and TCM plus ART group, respectively. For CD4 count of 〉 500 cells/mm3, the mean CD4 count changes were -34 and -17 cells/mm3 per year for the TCM group and TCM plus ART group, respectively. Long-term use of TCM could maintain or slow the pace of declining CD4 counts in patients with HIV/AIDS, and may achieve lasting effectiveness. 展开更多
