Results showed that the average value of amphipod abundance in autumn was 115× 10^-2 ind./m^3, the highest in four seasons. The second occurred in summer with a mean value of 44×10^-2 ind./m^3and the lowest occurred in spring with a mean of 10 × 10^-2 ind./m^3. Amphipods were hardly observed in the north nearshore ( 29° 30′- 33° N and 122°30′- 125°E) in winter and spring. In all seasons, except for the north of the sea in autumn and the south in summer, the abundance in the offshore area was higher than that nearshore. The major species influencing the amphipod abundance were Lestrigonus schizogeneios in spring, L. macrophthalmus and L schizogeneios in summer,L bengalensis and Hyperioides sibaginis in autumn and Gammarus sp. in winter. The amphiped abundance showed a prominent linear correlation with the surface water temperature, but no significant correlation with both other water temperatures and salinity in spring. It was found that water temperature and salinity were not significantly correlated with the variation of amphiped abundance in summer, autumn and winter. In addition, the amphiped abundance in all four seasons can be linearly correlated with the bottom water temperature. The highest abundance area was located in the mixture waters near the side of warm water current in summer. Peak of amphiped abundance in autumn, not in summer told a temporal process for amphipeds to develop their populations. The continuance of warm current was beneficial to the development of amphipod abundance from summer to autumn. Amphipeds are kinds of very important diets for fishes in the offshore East China Sea.展开更多

In population ecology, it can be considered as an index for the ability of a consumer to convert the biomass of food into its population production. In this study, it was firstly applied to estimate the role of amphipods grazing in the biomass dynamics of macroalgae (Ulva lactuca) in Yundang Lagoon (a subtropical eutrophic coastal lagoon, Xiamen City, China). It was found that amphipods were the dominant group (82.2%-98.7%) in the benthic assemblage, in which five amphipod species (Corophium uenoi, Ampithoe valida, Grandidierella japonica, Grammaropsis laevipalmata andCa-prella panantis) were observed in the lagoon. However, onlyA. valida significantly consumedU. lactuca among these amphipod species. A series of experiments were conducted to estimate the consumption of U. lactuca byA. valida. It was suggested that the monthly secondary production (P) ofA. valida using size frequency method ranged from 2.39 to 13.68 g/m2.GGEofA. valida exponentially reduced with body size and was closely associated with water temperature. Therefore,GGE equation for different months using the temperature recorded during the field investigation was fitted. The monthly consumption ofU. lactuca was figured out to be 86.7-1 549.0 g/m2 by the sum of consumption (P/GGE) byA. valida at different size, ac-counting for 2.0%-37.5% ofU. lactucaproduction. It indicates that the grazing effect ofA. valida did play a role in reducingthe accumulation ofU. lactucabiomass whenA. valida was abundant, but it finally fails to limit the U. lactucagrowth in Yundang Lagoon. Low abundance of A. valida and high nutrient loading may be two major reasons for the outbreak ofU. lactuca bloom in the lagoon.展开更多

To apply this approach, laboratory experiments were carried out at three temperatures regimes (15℃, 20℃, 25℃ ) to gain accurate data of IP and BL. The total number of specimens used in this study was 86 at 15℃ , 24 at 20℃ and 70 at 25℃. The number of flagellar segments of both antennae of the Hyale perieri could not be used as an index of growth (instar criterion). The obtained results indicated that, the predicted IP of the specimens was inversely related to temperature and in good agreement with the observed values at the experimental temperatures. IP data obtained from laboratory-reared specimes are combined with ABL data to establish a growth model for Hyale perieri from its release from the mar-supium (1.64 mm BL ) to the maximum size (12.67 mm BL) as a function of temperature. The maximum numbers of consecutive moults recorded during the experiment were 13 moults (14 instar) at 15℃, 14 moults (15 instar) at 20℃ and 12 moults (13 instar) at 25℃ . The predicted life span for BL = 12.67 mm (moult 13) was 203.82 d at 15t, for BL = 11.75 mm (moult 14) was 138.94 d at 20℃ and for BL = 8.65 mm (moult 12) was 75.40 d at 25℃ respectively, thus confirming that the life span of the species is inversely proportional to temperature. Within the experimental temperatures tested, the optimum temperature for the growth of the species was 20℃.展开更多

Maerl beds and Cymodocea nodosa meadows of the Canary Islands are considered biodiversity hot-spots in terms of taxonomic and functional biodiversity with a broad geographical and depth ranges. The authors have studied the structure of the macrofaunal assemblages on different habitat types (Cymodocea, Caulerpa, sabellid field, garden eel and maerl beds). Samples were taken at a range of depths between 14 and 46 m. Correlations were performed among abiotic variables (granulometry, organic matter, nitrogen and phosphates) and the most abundant taxa. Similarity analysis was performed to explore the patchiness of seabeds at a local scale. Significant differences were found in macrofaunal assemblages among seabed types, with highest abundances and lowest biodiversity in sabellid fields, where the sabellid Bispira viola dominated. The polychaetes Aponuphis bilineata and Chone filicauda and the mollusc Turritella brochii were the most abundant taxa on maerl beds. The mosaic of granulometric conditions would explain the associated macroinfaunal community structure and contribute to the creation of diversity on these relatively well preserved seabeds at a local scale.展开更多
