Response of Nitrous Oxide Flux to Addition of Anecic Earthworms to an Agricultural Field

The burrowing and feeding activities of earthworms may have a strong effect on the flux of N2O from agricultural soils. As such, shifts to agricultural management practices that increase the number of earthworms require an understanding of the role of earthworms in N2O dynamics. We conducted a field experiment to examine the effects of addition of anecic earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) on N2O flux in a field previously planted with corn (Zea mays) in southern Rhode Island, USA. Plots were amended with (15NH4)2SO4 and either 0 (CTL) or 48 L. terrestris m-2 (EW). The flux of N2O, 15N2O and 15N2 was measured over 28 days between October and November 2008. The EW treatment had a significantly higher flux of N2O and 15N2O 1 - 3 days after 15NH4 addition. No treatment effects were observed on 15N2 flux. The addition of earthworms significantly increased (Day 1) and decreased (Day 12) the mole fraction of N2O relative to the CTL. Our results suggest that anecic earthworm additions can increase N2O flux from inorganic fertilizer N amendments, but the effects appear to short-lived. 展开更多

Squeezed quantum vacua seems to violate the averaged null energy conditions (ANEC’s), because they have a negative energy density. When treated as a perfect fluid, rapidly rotating Casimir plates will create vorticity in the vacuum bounded by them. The geometry resulting from an arbitrarily extended Casimir plates along their axis of rotation is similar to van Stockum spacetime. We observe closed timelike curves (CTC’s) forming in the exterior of the system resulting from frame dragging. The exterior geometry of this system is similar to Kerr geometry, but because of violation of ANEC, the Cauchy horizon lies outside the system unlike Kerr blackholes, giving more emphasis on whether spacetime is multiply connected at the microscopic level. 展开更多

目的总结儿童急性坏死性脑病(acute necrotizing encephalopathy of childhood,ANEC)的临床特征、治疗和预后。方法回顾性分析2012年3月至2019年2月首都医科大学附属北京儿童医院确诊ANEC的临床资料。对存活患儿进行定期电话或门诊随访... 目的总结儿童急性坏死性脑病(acute necrotizing encephalopathy of childhood,ANEC)的临床特征、治疗和预后。方法回顾性分析2012年3月至2019年2月首都医科大学附属北京儿童医院确诊ANEC的临床资料。对存活患儿进行定期电话或门诊随访,应用儿童整体表现分类量表(pediatric overall performance category scale,POPC)评估患儿生存质量。结果共纳入38例患儿,男女比例为1.24∶1,月龄为29.5(19.5,41.8)个月。冬季(12月至次年2月)入院为主(81.6%,31/38),流感病毒感染多见(63.2%,24/38)。所有患儿均有发热伴不同程度意识障碍,97.4%(37/38)出现抽搐。神经影像学以对称性丘脑受累(100%,38/38)为典型改变,多伴有基底节区(76.3%,29/38)、脑干(63.2%,24/38)等部位受累。24 h动态脑电图或床旁脑电监测均出现背景节律减慢,8例最终出现静息电位。出院病死率为34.2%(13/38),出院后1、3、12个月累计病死率均为68.4%(26/38)。出院1年随访完全康复率(POPC评分1分)为10.5%(4/38)。结论ANEC冬季高发,多继发于流感病毒感染;以发热、抽搐、意识障碍为三联征,病情凶险、进展迅速,无特异性神经系统体征,以双侧丘脑受累为典型的影像学改变。本病虽具有高病死率及致残率,但部分存活患儿神经系统后遗症可逐渐减轻甚至消失。 展开更多
