Background:The assessment of change in forest ecosystems,especially the change of canopy heights,is essential for improving global carbon estimates and understanding effects of climate change.Spaceborne lidar systems ...Background:The assessment of change in forest ecosystems,especially the change of canopy heights,is essential for improving global carbon estimates and understanding effects of climate change.Spaceborne lidar systems provide a unique opportunity to monitor changes in the vertical structure of forests.NASA’s Ice,Cloud and Land Elevation Satellites,ICESat-1 for the period 2003 to 2009,and ICESat-2(available since 2018),have collected elevation data over the Earth’s surface with a time interval of 10 years.In this study,we tried to discover forest canopy changes by utilizing the global forest canopy height map of 2005(complete global coverage with 1 km resolution)derived from ICESat-1 data and the ATL08 land and vegetation products of 2019(sampling footprints with 17 m diameter)from ICESat-2.Results:Our study revealed a significant increase in forest canopy heights of China’s Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.Evaluations of unchanging areas for data consistency of two products show that the bias values decreased significantly from line-transect-level(−8.0 to 6.2 m)to site-level(^(−1).5 to 1.1 m),while RMSE values are still relatively high(6.1 to 15.2 m,10.2 to 12.0 m).Additionally,58%of ATL08 data are located in‘0m’pixels with an average height of 7.9 m,which are likely to reflect the ambitious tree planting programs in China.Conclusions:Our study shows that it is possible,with proper calibrations,to use ICESat-1 and-2 products to detect forest canopy height changes in a regional context.We expect that the approach presented in this study is potentially suitable to derive a fine-scale map of global forest change.展开更多
The Ice,Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2(ICESat-2),a new spaceborne light detection and ranging(LiDAR)system,was successfully launched on September 15,2018.The ICESat-2 data increase the types of spaceborne LiDAR ...The Ice,Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2(ICESat-2),a new spaceborne light detection and ranging(LiDAR)system,was successfully launched on September 15,2018.The ICESat-2 data increase the types of spaceborne LiDAR data archive and provide new control point data for large-scale topographic mapping and geodetic surveying.However,the accuracy of the ATL 08 terrain estimates has not been fully evaluated on a large scale and in complex terrain conditions.This article aims to quantitatively assess the accuracy of ICESat-2 ATL 08 terrain estimates.Firstly,the ICESat-2 ATL 08 terrain estimates were compared with the high-precision airborne LiDAR digital terrain model(DTM),and impacts of acquisition time,vegetation cover type,terrain slope,and season change on the terrain estimation accuracy were analyzed.We get the following conclusions from the analysis:1)the mean and RMSE of the terrain estimates of day acquisitions are 0.22 m and 0.59 m higher than that of night acquisitions;2)the accuracy of the ATL 08 terrain estimates acquired in vegetated areas is lower than those in non-vegetated areas;3)the accuracy of the ATL 08 terrain estimates is inversely proportional to the slope,and the elevation error increases significantly when the terrain slope is larger than 30°;4)in the non-vegetation covered area,the accuracy of the ATL 08 terrain estimates of summer and winter acquisitions has no obvious discrepancy,but in vegetated area,the accuracy of winter acquisitions is significantly better than that of summer acquisitions.This research provides references for the selection and application of ICESat-2 data.展开更多
ICESat-2(Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2)数据的平面定位精度达到米级,高程定位精度达到亚米级,但受各种外界因素的影响,部分激光足印点的高程精度较差,不能用作高程控制点。针对上述问题,本文提出一种适用于ICESat-2数据...ICESat-2(Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2)数据的平面定位精度达到米级,高程定位精度达到亚米级,但受各种外界因素的影响,部分激光足印点的高程精度较差,不能用作高程控制点。针对上述问题,本文提出一种适用于ICESat-2数据的多参数联合的高程控制点提取方法。该方法首先利用内置参数辅助检查激光足印点数据质量,滤除异常激光足印点,然后参考内置DEM(Digital Elevation Model)数据进行高程粗差剔除,最后结合云量标记、坡度参数以及时间标记属性参数设置阈值精细筛选,保留满足质量检查、坡度小、云量少的激光足印点作为最终高程控制点,并利用高精度参考高程数据进行精度验证。为验证本文方法的有效性,选取郑州西部、北科达他州西南部、印第安纳州北部地区的ICESat-2激光数据(高程平均绝对误差分别为3.711、0.582、0.333 m)进行高程控制点提取实验,实验结果表明,筛选后的激光足印点平均绝对误差分别达到0.827、0.393、0.131 m,该提取方法在多种地形场景下均能够提取出一定数量且精度较高的高程控制点,不仅能为1:50 000以及1:10 000立体测图提供数据支撑,还能为全国甚至是全球高程控制点提取和高程控制点库建设提供参考。展开更多
