The aim of this study is to conduct the validity analysis of the test paper of the academic English reading and writing course referring to the freshmen of non-English majors in a university of Technology in Shanghai....The aim of this study is to conduct the validity analysis of the test paper of the academic English reading and writing course referring to the freshmen of non-English majors in a university of Technology in Shanghai.The validity is mainly analyzed from these three aspects:the content and construct validity,the reaction process,and the internal structure of the test paper.And the principles of language assessment in the design of the test paper are given in this study.The validity study was also conducted in a class with 42 freshmen,and the scores of them were analyzed through the internal correlation coefficient from Statistic Package for Social Science(SPSS)25.0.Finally,the validity of the test paper is concluded.展开更多
With increasing academic exchanges and more frequent contact with foreign researchers,more and more postgraduate students are invited to attend international academic meetings,study aboard and participate in academic ...With increasing academic exchanges and more frequent contact with foreign researchers,more and more postgraduate students are invited to attend international academic meetings,study aboard and participate in academic lectures.However,academic English speaking course set up by many universities fail to improve postgraduate students’academic communication abilities and meet their needs.The research purpose of this paper is to do a need analysis of current academic English speaking courses for non-English major postgraduates.The research methodology includes literature and questionnaire.The questionnaire is designed based on Dudley-Evans and St John's Model.It aims to investigate current situation of academic speaking course and carry out a need analysis of postgraduate students.The results show that non-English major postgraduates have strong needs of academic English speaking.While,English speaking course could not meet the requirement of most postgraduate students.After completing all these courses,their oral academic competences are still beyond the expectations of their supervisors or international academic standard for normal presentation and communication in conference,seminar,lectures etc.展开更多
The goal of this short paper is to bring English academic writing(EAW)and mobile-assisted language learning(MALL)together to examine to what degree the latter can be effectively employed to support the former in the H...The goal of this short paper is to bring English academic writing(EAW)and mobile-assisted language learning(MALL)together to examine to what degree the latter can be effectively employed to support the former in the Hong Kong higher education context.It utilizes the perspectives generated from the literature,together with professional interpretation,to illustrate the affordances of MALL in EAW in the community.It is suggested that MALL can be employed to integrate academic English into the students’daily lives,through which they can implicitly build the knowledge of academic register outside of the classroom and ultimately use it in the classroom.展开更多

This ...The teaching of College English in institutions of higher learning in China is in a period of great transformation in which English for Specific Purposes( ESP) is replacing of English for General Purposes( EGP). This paper aims to analyze the present situation,hot topics and features in particular,of the researches in the field of ESP done by researchers in Anhui institutions of higher learning during the period from 2001 to 2014,by means of documentation. Firstly,the w riter review s the origin of English for Specific Purposes and its development within C hina,and then examines the major reasons for the transformation. Next,on the basis of analysis into the collected papers,the author points out that,as far as research method is concerned,we are being more empirical and more quantitative than speculative and qualitative; with regard to research contents,we are focusing on both theoretical and applicative studies and both macro and micro research,which is the research tendencies in Anhui.Lastly,the writer suggests that Anhui institutions of higher learning should set up their ow n research organization in order to form regional research dominance.展开更多
