With an emphasis on the religious component of reuse potentiality, this study investigates the crucial nexus between spatial development and the conservation model for religious practice with socio-communal dimensions.Adaptive reuse is a critical tactic for global preservation and revitalization to elevate heritage sites in culturally significant locations but provides contemporary functions to them simultaneously. This study examines the various facets of adaptive reuse concerning the religious cultural heritage of suppressed minorities, stressing its insight and importance including the inherent cultural worth of ancient structures and difficulties through creative solutions to modify the temple with modern purposes. The research methodology approaches through an extensive analysis of the literature and case studies and ends with design interventions. It looks into the socioeconomic advantages of adaptive reuse in religious practice, such as the promotion of pilgrimage tourism, community revitalization, and sustainable development. The possible findings will emphasize the conversation on sustainable heritage management by combining theoretical frameworks with practical discoveries as an architectural project with certain concepts. 展开更多

Industrial buildings are valuable heritage structures that should be sustained as well as historic buildings since the preservation of the traditional values in the context of conservation is important in terms of a sense of the continuity of the culture. Kadir Has University building has been selected as the case study of the research. Success of the conversion and interventions in terms of sustainability will be discussed. The aim of the study is to question adaptive reuse project of the Cibali Tobacco Factory as university within the framework of urban regeneration of Cibali district. The relation between adaptive reuse projects and its relationship among socio-cultural, economic, and physical dimensions of the sustainability, also its effects on the environment and region has been discussed. Adaptive reuse examples should not be accepted as single projects. Its contribution to the environment and the region is also crucial. Preservation of an individual building can be a catalyst to renewal of others. It can help the transformation of the whole area. There is always an interaction between the conversion projects and the environment. In order to achieve a successful conversion, appropriate functions should be given to the industrial heritage buildings according to the needs of the region. 展开更多

Urban underground infrastructures(UUIs)are a vital component of built capital for urban sustainability. However, many cities are now home to a multitude of disused or underutilized UUIs,not least aged purpose-built underground facilities, causing a waste of valuable underground space resource assets. In the process of urban renewal, adaptive reuse can be an attractive solution to breathe new life into underutilized UUIs,while addressing some of the modern problems of the built environment by an economically feasible means.Nevertheless, there is a prevalent absence in the current literature of the overarching planning and decision-making approaches for an adaptive reuse development of underutilized UUIs.With the intention of addressing this shortfall, this paper first lays out development strategies, then sets the generic patterns for adaptive reuse of disused or underutilized UUIs.Taking the city of Qingdao,China as a case study, detailed planning and decision-making approaches with the aid of multi-source data and spatial analysis tools are presented. It is anticipated that the findings of this research will assist the adaptive reuse development of UUIs in providing theoretical guidance and empirical evidence, thereby enhancing the role of urban underground space use in contributing to urban revitalization and urban sustainability. 展开更多

The political significance of modernist heritage architecture continues to be an unsolved question, particularly its identification and conservation. In Spain, the chronology of modernism stretches through the whole of the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s dictatorship. The passing of legislation on memory politics in Spain(i.e.the 2007 Law of Historical Memory and the 2022 Law of Democratic Memory)offers a unique opportunity to address this unsolved question by discussing two uncharted heritage debates:namely, the motivations for the heritagisation of modernist architecture in Spain and the challenges in the adaptive reuse of modernist buildings with controversial histories. The former police headquarters in Seville exemplifies the complexities of both debates and to what extent conflicting views about heritage architecture may determine debates about its reuse.Through a documentary review of the heritagisation of Seville’s former police headquarters,a discourse analysis of intervention proposals and press articles and interviews with relevant stakeholders, this study explored how the rise of memory politics in Spain has changed the interpretation of the former police headquarters’significance in the last two decades and influenced the choices for its adaptive reuse. 展开更多

The paper analyzes the definite place of industrial building in the history of urban development. Due to the development of urban economy and the transition of the traditional industrial structure, many historic cities and towns both at home and abroad have witnessed a large scale "demolition" and abandonment of industrial buildings in urban renewal during last 30 years. Consequently, it has been leading to the discontinuity of urban cultural and historic context. The paper discusses and expounds the clas... 展开更多

With the growing trend towards preserving global architectural heritage, the adaptive reuse of built heritagebuildings is becoming increasingly popular;as commentators have noted, this popularity can in part be attributedto the economic, cultural, and social benefits they provide to urban communities. In considering adaptive reuse, urban developers and planners seek to reach an equilibrium in the battle between time and space. Bothacademically and practically, the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings requires compatible, appropriate, andscientific means for assessing built heritage assets;however, currently, research in this area is still relatively meagre. To address this gap, this paper investigates research frameworks, methodologies, and assessment methods thatconcern the adaptive reuse of architectural heritage. In this paper, we examine the current literature on theparadigms for applying mixed methodologies: the multi-criteria decision model (MCDM) and the preferencemeasurement model (PMM). Specifically, in examining the extant literature, we explore the ways in which thesemethods are discussed, compared, and evaluated, and the positive functions of these methods are also highlighted. In addition, this review examines a range of cases to better clarify the research frameworks, methodologies, andassessment methods used in the study of the adaptive reuse of architectural heritage. 展开更多

To increase the convergence rate of the improved normalized subband adaptive filter,a simple but effective method is presented to change the reusing order of coefficient vectors of the adaptive filter. At the beginning of adaptation the algorithmjust uses its current coefficient vector to update the adaptive filter to maintain fast convergence rate, while in steady state it employs several most recent coefficient vectors to update the adaptive filter to reduce misalignment. Simulation results showthat the proposed algorithmcan obtain both fast convergence rate and small steady-state misalignment. 展开更多

The progressive deindustrialisation of many western cities since the 1980s has led to many industrial zones linked to port activities being abandoned or falling into disuse.Cities such as Barcelona,Naples,Lisbon,Amsterdam, and Hamburg have port industrial complexes of high tangible and intangible heritage value that could totally or partially disappear, resulting in an irreparable loss of their scientific, architectural, social, technological, and historical values. With that in mind,Adaptive Reuse(AR)of the built heritage allows the industrial memory of the ports to be preserved by turning them into new functional centres within the existing urban structure. That occurs in the context of the contemporary challenges of those cities, such as touristification, the circular economy and climate change, while guaranteeing the life cycle of those buildings. This article analyses two case studies—the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij(NDSM)and the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij(RDM)shipyards, both in the Netherlands—in order to contribute to the knowledge of AR of Port Industrial Heritage. They are two examples of good practices in port industrial heritage interventions, where the factors behind their acclaim can be easily highlighted.A multi-scale methodology is therefore used and tailored to the case of port industrial heritage, based on analysing previous studies of the heritage in different spheres and on different scales.A relationship matrix tool is thus defined. It enables a comparative study to be conducted, using key variables and indicators, and considering qualitative and quantitative data. That provides extensive output information for each case study, which is summarised in the most favourable factors for the success of the AR of this port industrial heritage. 展开更多

Heritage and tourism have become dynamic areas of development in the world during the last two decades. The idea of heritage is crucial to the critical decision-making process as to how irreplaceable resources are to be utilized by people of the present or conserved for future generations in a fast-changing world. In view of the importance of "heritage" to the development of a tourist destination, the emphasis on developing appropriate adaptive reuse strategies cannot be overemphasized. In October 1999, the 12th General Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Mexico stated that in the context of sustainable development, two interrelated issues need urgent attention: cultural tourism and historic cities. The two issues underscore the fact that historic resources are non-renewable, belonging to all of humanity. Without adequate adaptive reuse actions to ensure a sustainable future for these historic resources, this may lead to their complete vanishing. The Gulf rich urban heritage is now being recognized as a valuable resource for future development. This paper focuses on the role of heritage tourism and its implications for urban conservation in the context of old Dubai, UAE. Therefore, in order to use heritage wisely, it will be necessary to position heritage as an essential element of sustainable development, paying particular attention to heritage tourism. The question to be raised here is: "How can urban heritage be used wisely for tourism without compromising its educational and social roles in enhancing the local cultural identity?". 展开更多

This proposal is intended to be a contribution toward achieving more liveable cities through the revitalization of inner areas based on the restoration and rehabilitation of historic facilities in order to meet current needs. The research starts by posing the following questions. Can we claim, in a general perspective of improvement of the quality of life in towns and cities, that the recovery of abandoned historic buildings could be a key-factor in conservation and innovation policies of the historical heart of towns? What relationship, if any, is there between the adaptive-reuse design of ancient hospitals and the effects of such action, not only in terms of heritage conservation but also in terms of economic and social regeneration of the surrounding context? The complexity of this issue is addressed by analyzing related cases, relevant for their design solutions and effects, and proposes answers to the opening questions by correlating the main characters of relevant case studies in Europe. 展开更多

In orthogonal frequency division multiple access(OFDMA) relay system, for supporting relay transmission, the base station(BS)-the relay station(RS) link must consume an extra part of resource, which may result in serious resource shortage. In order to improve resource utilization, this paper proposes a dynamic resource allocation scheme in adaptive frequency reused OFDMA-relay system based on adaptive modulation and coding(AMC) technology. In this scheme, relay nodes have two independent antennas and operate in decode-and-forward(DF) and full-duplex mode. Then the BS and RSs share the same subcarriers by spatial multiplexing by two independent antennas. The resource allocation problem is formulated for system downlink throughput maximization.Since the optimal solution couldn't be obtained easily,a sub-optimal algorithm is proposed. The adaptive frequency reused algorithm with two independent antennas RS improves the system throughput about 24.3 % compared with the orthogonal frequency allocation with single-antenna model, and increases the system throughput 10.4 % compared with adaptive frequency reused algorithms with single-antenna RS.It is proved that both of the RS with two-antenna model and adaptive frequency reused scheme can improve the system throughput significantly. 展开更多

In recent years, the conservation of industrial heritage in China has gained increasing attention within the broader context of urban conservation practices. For both policy-makers and scholars, accommodating this industrial heritage will emerge as a pertinent issue for consideration as a growing number of industrial architectural legacies dating from the Republican and Maoist eras come under (re)development pressures. This paper thus traces the development of industrial heritage conservation practices in China and discusses several dilemmas intrinsic to this type of conservation, including issues of authenticity, representativeness, and distinction. Based on comparative case studies from China and other international precedents, this paper also seeks to illustrate the different approaches that could be pursued while still attaining a balance between competing interests and claims. 展开更多

Since the turn of the century, creative industries have displayed considerable power in transforming the social and economic landscapes of most global metropolises, including such Chinese mega-cities as Beijing and Shanghai. However, the story of creative industries does not end there.Recent studies have focused on the role of creative sector in the countryside. It has been argued that the creative sector can effectively contribute to diversifying socio-economic development in rural areas by increasing employment, enhancing the quality of life, and promoting social inclusion and community development. With the aim to chart new paths for China’s rural revitalisation and address the country’s‘three rural issues’(i.e.agriculture,rural areas and farmers),this paper examines the potentials and challenges to developing the creative sector in rural China. It first reviews the academic debate about expanding the development of creative industries from urban to rural areas.Drawing on the research and classification of creative industries in rural Western Ireland, this study identifies industries characterised by‘content creation and production’and‘creative design services’,which would have potential in rural China. The major impediments to and crucial factors for developing rural creative industries in China are investigated and appraised within the framework of‘creative people, creative place, and creative support’.After analysing emerging practices in Jiangsu Province, this paper highlights the potential of abandoned industrial complexes in rural parts of China’s coastal regions, which can act as incubators for creative industries. Those former manufacturing plants are the remains of township-village enterprises(TVEs),which constituted part of China’s flagship policy for rural regeneration in the 1980s.Not only do they have special architectural attributes favourable for creative production, but also represent the socio-economic entity of the village collective and are the carriers of cultural meanings and memories. This paper concludes with a set of recommendations for both public and private sectors. It calls for a more proactive stance from governments to promote the creative sector in rural areas and revitalise rural economies and communities through the reuse or regeneration of former TVEs. 展开更多

This study draws on Henri Lefebvre’s(The production of space,1992,translated by D.Nicholson-Smith)concept of the spatial triad to examine the micropolitics of the production of urban and social space in a cafe in a historic tourist town in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai.Such a spatial and social examination of the historic town of Tangjiawan’s Wangchuan Cafe is conducted in the context of a growing consumer society and experience economy in China.Spe‑cifcally,we found that the cafe proprietor has performed a role that is commonly associated with ofcial planners and technocrats in creating a‘cofee art living space’in a process that Lefebvre describes as a‘representation of space,’and that‘spatial practices’serve to shape the space away from the heritage signifcance of the town and towards entre‑preneurially aligned ideals.Such resultant consumerist spaces are coconstructed with and negotiated by visitors and consumers. In conducting such an examination,we highlight and critique the ways in which dominant discourses operate in a microsite, such as that of a cafe, that has become a key cultural tourism attraction of the refurbished historic town, the means by which such discourses and visions result in real-world transformations and the ways in which visitors and tourists interpret and negotiate such a microsite. 展开更多

Once abandoned for more than three decades, vernacular settlements in Oman are now being progressively reinvested in to foster the country’s heritage tourism sector. The present research focuses on the emerging phenomenon of community-led initiatives for vernacular heritage rehabilitation and adaptive reuse in Oman.Through an examination of three case studies, its aim is to describe this process and its modes of action and discuss its efects on vernacular settlement transformations.A mixed research methodology was designed to include(A)analyses of relevant primary and secondary data,(B)documented onsite observations,(C)interviews with local community representatives and key players in the operations of rehabilitation, and(D)extractions and analyses of quantitative data from a hotel booking website. The research sheds light on unsuspected interrelations within and between the projects being implemented in these settlements and their operating modes. It reveals the focal role of a local community in a kind of‘bottom-up’management of its built heritage, coupled with a‘horizontal cooperation’between the three initiatives studied in this research. Moreover,it shows that a heavily centralised and top-down policy for the feld of heritage conservation and management is among the main obstacles that hinder such initiatives.Furthermore,community-led operations of vernacular heritage rehabilitation are being undertaken under insufcient regulations in terms of land use, building restoration and adaptive reuse. In this context, the paper discusses some of the serious threats and concerns faced by such initiatives and proposes actionable solutions to mitigate these hindrances. 展开更多

The Modern Movement has demonstrated its long-term legitimacy as a lasting concept endowed with longevity.Relating technology, spatial form and social commitment to one another, through an optimistic faith in progress, modern architects sought to attain new heights of functionality and flexibility in use.The current challenge is to find ways to deal with the conservation of this recent legacy in the continuously changing context of current times, including physical, economic, functional, and fast-moving socio-cultural and political values. To address these questions,‘Modern built heritage conservation policies’explores the restoration and renovation processes undertaken in some paradigmatic case studies:the Tugendhat House(Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich,Brno,Czech Republic,1929-1930),the Crown Hall(Mies van der Rohe,Chicago,USA,1950-1956),the National Museum of Western Art(Le Corbusier,Tokyo,Japan,1959)and the Gulbenkian Foundation(Alberto Pessoa,Pedro Cid e Ruy d’Athouguia,Lisbon,Portugal,1959-1969). 展开更多
