While polymer-based packaging material has been very extensively used, there has been a recent move to paper-based packaging products because of their economic and environmentally-friendly nature. Currently, Paper and paper-based board materials have been used as packaging material for food products, and e-commerce business. Adhesives in packaging industries are critical to the structure of most paper and paper board packaging, whether applied during the process of conversion and on the packaging line. From a production point of view, adhesive choice can significantly affect process line efficiency and production performance. Adhesive types used in paper industries are water-based adhesives both synthetic and bio-polymer based (starch, cellulose, protein and itaconic acid), Solvent-based adhesives (polyurethane and acrylic-based) and 100% solids adhesives like heat sealing adhesive and hot melts. More recently, water-based heat-expandable adhesive having thermally insulative and cushion-like properties has been provided for use in protective packages and wrap. Here, we aim to present an overview of the research trend of adhesives in the paper packaging industry. The overview summarizes the different adhesives for paper packaging industries.展开更多

The results indicate that the maximum lap-shear strength and durability of the bonding joints pretreated by different processes are influenced by the grade of abrasive papers and can be obviously improved by phosphoric acid anodizing. Alkali etching can obviously improve the durability of bonding joints although it slightly influences the maximum lap-shear strength. The process which is composed of grit-finishing, acetone degreasing, alkali etching and phosphoric acid anodizing, provides a better adhesive bonding property of Al alloy.展开更多

The aim of this work was to synthesize polymeric binders via radical copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) with maleic anhydride (MA) and with 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS). The chemical structures of the prepared binders were characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR analysis. The rheology of the prepared binders was also investigated. The prepared binders were applied in paper coating suspensions and their effects on optical, mechanical, and physical properties in addition to printability of the coated paper were studied. The results showed that acrylic maleic anhydride copolymers increased the adhesion, gave good film forming properties and good surface activity which increased print quality of paper coating. It was also found that MA/AA (50:50) and the blend between MA/AA (50:50) with AMPS:AA (30:70) have more suitable coating film properties and have highest pick resistance which is resemble to the commercial binder.展开更多
