Question-Answer systems are now very popular and crucial to support human in automatically responding frequent questions in manyfields.However,these systems depend on learning methods and training data.Therefore,it is ...Question-Answer systems are now very popular and crucial to support human in automatically responding frequent questions in manyfields.However,these systems depend on learning methods and training data.Therefore,it is necessary to prepare such a good dataset,but it is not an easy job.An ontol-ogy-based domain knowledge base is able to help to reason semantic information and make effective answers given user questions.This study proposes a novel chatbot model involving ontology to generate efficient responses automatically.A case study of admissions advising at the International University–VNU HCMC is taken into account in the proposed chatbot.A domain ontology is designed and built based on the domain knowledge of university admissions using Protégé.The Web user interface of the proposed chatbot system is developed as a prototype using NetBeans.It includes a search engine reasoning the ontology and generat-ing answers to users’questions.Two experiments are carried out to test how the system reacts to different questions.Thefirst experiment examines questions made from some templates,and the second one examines normal questions taken from frequent questions.Experimental results have shown that the ontology-based chatbot can release meaningful and long answers.The results are analysed to prove the proposed chatbot is usable and promising.展开更多

Students Peer Advising (SPA) was initiated by students in order to support ...To evaluate the satisfaction of medical students from Students Peer Advising activities, its strengths, limitations and how it can improve. Students Peer Advising (SPA) was initiated by students in order to support collaborative and experiential learning. In this approach, senior students provided and shared their educational experiences with junior students individually or in large groups. Advice was mainly on how to succeed in this demanding student centered educational program. Two groups were investigated, the committee members (Advisors) and the students (Advisees) who attended the SPA events, by using a self-administered questionnaire. One hundred and thirteen advisees responded. 74 (65%) advisees provided a score of 4 or 5 out of 5, with 5 being the most satisfactory and useful, when inquired about the overall satisfaction and usefulness of peer advising. SPA committee consisted of fifteen members, of whom thirteen responded. Fifteen sessions were conducted by members from different academic years, and they all agreed that it was a beneficial experience. The most rewarding aspect of their experience revolved around the gratification and sense of satisfaction consequent to improving the students' academic performance. The study found that peer advising was appreciated by students and peer advisors.展开更多

It is obvious that the speech to actuate should be more inspired and motive than the speech to convince. So the language of the speech to actuate should have some special features. Personal pronoun is one of the basic elements of language. It is widely used in our daily speaking, and for a speaker, it is also an effective way to control the emotion of listeners. Different personal pronouns have different effects in a speech, and this thesis has analyzed the effects of personal pronouns in the speech to actuate respectively with the examples of “I Have a Dream” made by Martin Luther King and “My Education, My Future” made by Barack Hussein Obama Jr., the president of America. From the analysis, we can see the concrete role every pronoun played in the speeches of different styles, and how it impacts the success of a speech. Such an analysis and probe leads to a better understanding on the art of English speaking, which can help the learners of English make these skills in their charge.展开更多

Objective:The 5As framework(ask,advise,assess,assist,arrange)is a recommended strat-egy for smoking cessation counseling in primary care.This study compares patient report with direct observation to assess the degree ...Objective:The 5As framework(ask,advise,assess,assist,arrange)is a recommended strat-egy for smoking cessation counseling in primary care.This study compares patient report with direct observation to assess the degree of recall bias for each of the 5As.Methods:Primary care visits by 107 adult smokers and 16 physicians were audio-recorded.Within 48 hours after the visit,patients completed a survey assessing whether or not smoking was discussed and items specific to each of the 5As.The audio recordings were evaluated to assess the presence of each A.The sensitivity,specificity,positive predictive value,and negative predictive value of patient report versus direct observation were computed.Results:The frequency of the 5As based on evaluation of the audio recording ranged from 13% (arrange)to 98% (ask).The sensitivity and specificity of patient report were 92% and not applicable for ask,90% and 50% for assess,94% and 33% for advise,90% and 50% for assist,and 85% and 67% for arrange follow-up.Positive predictive values ranged from 28% to 98%;negative predictive values ranged from 0% to 97% .Conclusion:Compared with the gold standard of direct observation,patient report of each of the 5As is reasonably sensitive but not specific.Patients overreport the occurrence of each of the 5As.展开更多
Although the literature on second language acquisition recognizes the importance of the affective dimension in language learning,little is known about how to support the affective dimension throughout the autonomous l...Although the literature on second language acquisition recognizes the importance of the affective dimension in language learning,little is known about how to support the affective dimension throughout the autonomous learning process.Language advising is a privileged space for addressing,besides the cognitive and metacognitive aspects,the affective dimensions of the learning process. Most importantly,within the professional and interpersonal relationship created between advisor and learner, it is easier to reflect on the emotional and affective implications of learning.This study explores the role of emotions and feelings in the learner’s and the advisor’s discourse,with the aim of shedding light on affect in autonomous language learning processes and thus helping language professionals to recognize and deal with affective issues as they arise. Based on audio-recordings and transcripts of individual advising sessions,the research design focuses on discourse analysis of the learners’ and the advisor’s discourse.The results show significant expression of emotions in the learner’s discourse,related both to past learning experiences and to planning further learning steps. In the advisor’s discourse,emotions are less apparent,as the advisor,rather,tends to mirror,empathize or counterbalance the learner’s emotions.展开更多
As language learning advisors become familiar figures in self-access centers,their role in language learner autonomy(LLA)has attracted various researchers’ attention.However,higher education students travelling abroa...As language learning advisors become familiar figures in self-access centers,their role in language learner autonomy(LLA)has attracted various researchers’ attention.However,higher education students travelling abroad to study are less likely to be familiar with advisors, especially if they are from a country where language advisory service is uncommon, such as in China. Nonetheless, we know very little about what these students think about advisors. Therefore,this study aims to investigate the perspectives these students may have on the role of advisors,enabling their learning needs to be better recognised and supported. This case study involves 120 masters’ students originally from China's Mainland on a pre-sessional course at a research institute in the UK,as well as students at the end of their one-year study, employing questionnaires and interviews to collect data.The results show that before the course,over 80% of the students reckon advisors are monitors to supervise them or advisors are teachers to teach them. However, throughout the course,the students gradually realize advisors play complex roles in developing students’ learner autonomy. Additionally, during the first week on the course, 62% of the students perceive learner autonomy as'to study by oneself, without others’ help'. Nevertheless, at the end of their one-year study, 75% of them perceive learner autonomy as'the attitudes and abilities toward life-long learning'. Overall, the findings indicate that the Chinese students’ transition to the British academic culture deepens their perceptions of learner autonomy, and bridges their gap between theory and practice of learner autonomy, but also helps them gain understanding of the complex nature of the advisor roles.展开更多
