Strategic development of commercial airports in Chongqing

Civil airports in China in the last 10 years have expanded substantially, and the construction of airports has come into a period planning to build airports into large transportation hub. This article combines the new trends of commercial real estate and the airport business, and explores various business marketing and management modes for operating airports with specific reference to the case of Chongqing. The main research results are as follows: First, the introduction of products and services markets should make more focus on the structure and habits of travelers. Second, developing new commercial projects through the BOT model and practicing resource replacement mode. Third, planning the terminal surrounding functions, the layout of successful business is the key factor of the rapid increase of airport non-aeronautical revenue.

A greedy algorithm based on joint assignment of airport gates and taxiways in large hub airports

With the rapid development of civil aviation in recent years,the management and assignment of airport resources are becoming more and more difficult.Among the various airport resources,gates and taxiways are very important,therefore,many researchers focus on the airport gate and taxiway assignment problem.However,the joint assignment algorithm of airport gates and taxiways with realistic airport data has not been well studied.A greedy algorithm based on joint assignment of airport gates and taxiways using the data of a large hub airport in China is proposed.The objective is maximizing the ratio of fixed gates and minimizing the ratio of taxiway collisions.Simulation results show that it outperforms other assignment schemes.

Empirical analysis of airport network and critical airports

Air transport network, or airport network, is a complex network involving numerous airports. Effective management of the air transport system requires an in-depth understanding of the roles of airports in the network. Whereas knowledge on air transport network properties has been improved greatly, methods to find critical airports in the network are still lacking. In this paper, we present methods to investigate network properties and to identify critical airports in the network. A novel network model is proposed with airports as nodes and the correlations between traffic flow of airports as edges. Spectral clustering algorithm is developed to classify air- ports. Spatial distribution characteristics and intraclass correlation of different categories of air- ports are carefully analyzed. The analyses based on the fluctuation trend of distance-correlation and power spectrum of time series are performed to examine the self-organized criticality of the net- work. The results indicate that there is one category of airports which dominates the self-organized critical state of the network. Six airports in this category are found to be the most important ones in the Chinese air transport network. The flights delay occurred in these six airports can propagate to the other airports, having huge impact on the operation characteristics of the entire network. The methods proposed here taking traffic dynamics into account are capable of identifying critical air- ports in the whole air transport network.

Integrating small mammal community variables into aircraft–wildlife collision management plans at Namibian airports

Understanding ecosystems within and around airports can help to determine the causes and possible mitigation measures for collisions between aircraft and wildlife.Small mammal communities are an important component of the semi-arid savanna ecosystems of Namibia,its productivity and its ecosystem integrity.They are also a major direct attractant for raptors at airports.The present study compared the abundance and diversity of small mammals between Namibia’s 2 main airport properties(Hosea Kutako International Airport and Eros Airport),and among areas of land used for various purposes surrounding the airports.A total of 2150 small mammals(3 orders,11 species)were captured over 4 trapping seasons.Small mammal abundance was significantly higher at the end of the growing season than during the non-growing season.The grass mowing regimen in current management plans at the airports resulted in a significant reduction of small mammal abundance at Hosea Kutako during the non-growing season only,thus indicating that annual mowing is effective but insufficient to reduce the overall abundance of mammal prey species for raptors.Small mammal numbers were significantly higher at Hosea Kutako Airport compared to the cattle and game farming land surrounding the airport,while no differences in small mammal densities or diversity were found for areas with different land uses at and surrounding Eros.The study suggests that the fence around Hosea Kutako provides a refuge for small mammals,resulting in higher densities.It also indicates that different surrounding land use practices result in altered ecosystem function and productivity,an important consideration when identifying wildlife attractants at airports.

Evolution of airports from a network perspective--An analytical concept

Analyzing airports＇ role in global air transportation and monitoring their development over time provides an additional perspective on the dynamics of network evolution.In order to understand the different roles airports can play in the network an integrated and multidimensional approach is needed.Therefore,an approach to airport classification through hierarchical clustering considering several parameters from network theory is presented in this paper.By applying a 29 year record of global flight data and calculating the conditional transition probabilities the results are displayed as an evolution graph similar to a discrete-time Markov chain.With this analytical concept the meaning of airports is analyzed from a network perspective and a new airport taxonomy is established.The presented methodology allows tracking the development of airports from certain categories into others over time.Results show that airports of equal classes run through similar stages of development with a limited number of alternatives,indicating clear evolutionary patterns.Apart from giving an overview of the results the paper illustrates the exact data-driven approach and suggests an evaluation scheme.The methodology can help the public and industry sector to make informed strategy decisions when it comes to air transportation infrastructure.

Architecture of ecumenical spaces in public buildings in the 21st century:Links among the architecture of multi-faith spaces,their names,and the functions they serve in Polish airports

This study explores the architecture and arrangement of prayer spaces in public build-ings.It examines whether Polish airports have prayers spaces and whether a correlation exists be-tween the name(e.g.,“multi-faith space,”,“place of prayer,”and,“place of focus”)and design.The study is supported by analyses of ecumenical spaces,which have recently been brought into service and where a visible symbiosis exists between their names and functions.This study includes in situ investigations and is conducted based on a wide range of literature,statistical data,comparative methods,and logical reasoning.This study may provide an important indication for countries that are only beginning to face a design problem concerning architecture of multi-faith spaces.

Disruption Recovery at Airports:Ground Holding,Curfew Restrictions and an Approximation Algorithm

We study disruptions at a major airport.Disruptions could be caused by bad weather,for example.Our study is from the perspective of the airport,the air services provider(such as air traffic control)and the travelling public,rather than from the perspective of a single airline.Disruptions cause flights to be subjected to ground holding,or they cause the flights to violate airport curfew hours.We consider curfew and arrival capacities applicable at a single airport.After proving that the problem is NP-hard,we present a polynomial time approximation algorithm based on the primal–dual schema and show that if the problem is feasible,the algorithm finds a feasible solution that is both within a certain additive bound and within a certain multiplicative factor of the optimal solution.The algorithm returns a solution mix of which flights suffer no delay,which ones to be ground-held and which ones may violate the curfew(and hence pay a curfew penalty).Computational results are positive;our heuristic outperforms the integer programming solver by a wide margin.

本文建立了停机位分配的多商品网络流模型,并以航空器总场面运行时间最小为目标,建立数学模型。将机场场面分为若干区域,建立区域—机位两级分配策略,以降低问题规模。设置机位外等待时间,以省去区域容量相关约束。在传统粒子群算法的基础上,设计离散粒子群算法,对模型进行求解。选取乌鲁木齐机场某日240架航班和109个机位进行实验,证明了与现有研究中的典型模型相比,多商品网络流模型能使运算时间减少10.1%,并能达到与典型模型相同的精度。全空域和机场模型(total airspace and airport modeller,TAAM)仿真结果表明,和现行机位分配方案相比,多商品网络流模型的机位分配结果能使航空器的场面调配运行时间减少7.49%,延误时间减少8.87%。算例结果进一步表明,提高机场场面运行效率的关键在于均衡航班的进离港滑行距离,同时避免停机位密集分布。
