Various solidification parameters of the alloys were measured and calculated through thermal analysis experiments. The microstructure, grain size, and morphology of the crack zone were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction, and the crystal phases of the alloys were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results showed that the addition of 0.5 wt.% Gd resulted in the increase in the vulnerable temperature range(Tv) and reduced the eutectic structure content that could participate in feeding, thereby improving the HTS of the alloy. However, addition of 0.5 wt.% Sb or combined addition of Gd and Sb(0.5 wt.%, respectively) to the Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy shortened the Tvand improved the skeleton strength of the alloy, thereby reducing HTS. Moreover, significantly refined structure of Mg-5Al-3Ca-0.5Gd-0.5Sb alloy improved the feeding ability of the eutectic structure, thus the alloy exhibited the lowest HTS.展开更多

Fuzzy logic (FL) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used to model the mechanical properties of aluminum-5%magnesium (0-0.9 wt%) neodymium. The single input (SI) to the fuzzy logic and artificial neural network models was the percentage weight of neodymium, while the multiple outputs (MO) were average grain size, ultimate tensile strength, yield strength elongation and hardness. The fuzzy logic-based model showed more accurate prediction than the artificial neutral network-based model in terms of the correlation coefficient values (R).展开更多

The results show that with an increase in wall thickness, the cooling rate decreases, the dendrite arm spacing(DAS) increases significantly and the mechanical properties decrease steadily. The elongation is more sensitive to the cooling rate than the tensile strength. No obvious trend of the effect of wall thickness on hardness of the alloy was found. When the cooling rate is at its greatest, the microstructures and mechanical properties are the best when using chromite sand. The improvement of the properties is mainly attributed to the decrease of the DAS, the grain refinement and the metamorphic effect. Each of the three has a strong impact on the microstructures. Furthermore, a series of fitting models was established based on the data of the DAS to predict the mechanical properties of the multivariate sand-cast Al-7.5Si-4Cu alloy,展开更多

The same alloy was also spray deposited at a gas pressure of 1.6 MPa. The microstructural features exhibit a coarse to fine dendritic morphology for sand and chill cast alloys. Equiaxed grains were observed for spray formed alloys. Wear testing employing a pin-on-disc type set-up, reveals considerably lower wear of spray deposited alloy compared to that of chill and sand cast alloys. The morphological features of wear track on specimen and debris indicated a mixed oxidative-cum-adhesive wear mechanisms for these alloys tested in the present investigation. In order to clarify the Ti5Si3 formation processes and its microstructure characteristics, the as-cast and deeply etched Cu-Ti-Si alloys with different compositions and cooling rates were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It is found that the eutectic Ti5Si3 phases in Cu-Ti-Si alloys are rod-like with hexagonal cross section which tend to intertwine with each other to form a firm skeleton like a bird nest structure which can make the alloys keep their original shape even after etching off the Cu matrix. In addition, there is Cu in the center of many Ti5Si3 rods, resulting in a core-shell structure. With the increase of the cooling rate, Ti5Si3 distributes more uniformly, and the diameter of Ti5Si3 significantly decreases, with a minimum size of less than 100 nm, while the aspect ratio of Ti5Si3 increases.展开更多

The results show that, the microstructure of submicron crystalline Cu-5%Cr can be further refined by cold drawing. After cold drawing, the grains of Cu-5%Cr alloy with grain size of 400-500 nm can be refined to be cellular structures and subgrains with size of 100-200 nm. Both strength and ductility of Cu-5%Cr alloy can be enhanced by cold drawing, and the optimal mechanical properties can be achieved with drawing deformation increasing. It is suggested that dislocation glide is still the main mechanism in plastic deformation of submicron crystalline Cu-5%Cr, but grain boundary slide and diffusion may play more and more important roles with drawing deformation increasing. When the cold drawn Cu-5%Cr wires are annealed at 550 ℃, fine recrystal grains with grain size of 200-300 nm can be obtained. Furthermore, there are lots of fine Cr particles precipitated during annealing, by which the recrystallization softening temperatures of the cold drawn Cu-5%Cr wires can be increased to 480-560 ℃. Due to the fact that Cr particles have the effect of restricting Cu grains growth, a favorable structural thermal stability of the submicron crystalline Cu-5%Cr can be achieved, and the submicron grained microstructure can be retained at high temperature annealing.展开更多
