Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) by alkaline flooding for conventional oils has been extensively studied. For heavy oils, investigations are very limited due to the unfavorable mobility ratio between the water and oil phases. In this study, the displacement mechanisms of alkaline flooding for heavy oil EOR are investigated by conducting flood tests in a micromodel. Two different displacement mechanisms are observed for enhancing heavy oil recovery. One is in situ water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion formation and partial wettability alteration. The W/O emulsion formed during the injection of alkaline solution plugs high permeability water channels, and pore walls are altered to become partially oil-wetted, leading to an improvement in sweep efficiency and high tertiary oil recovery. The other mechanism is the formation of an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Heavy oil is dispersed into the water phase by injecting an alkaline solution containing a very dilute surfactant. The oil is then entrained in the water phase and flows out of the model with the water phase. 展开更多

The IFTs(Interfacial tension)of petroleum carboxylate/alkaline/HPAM(Hydrolyzed polyacrylamide)flooding system with Daing crude oil and the effects of petroleum carboxylate and alkaline on viscoaity of HPAM solution were studied. There exists remarkable synergism between HPAM and petroleum carboxylate, and the introduction of HPAM into petroleum carboxylate/alka- line system leads the lowering of IFTs against Daqing crude oil,The introduction of petroleum carboxylate into solution of HPAM also leads the decreasing of viscosity, but the extent of viscosity decreasing is much lower than that caused by inorganic salts such as NaCl and CaCl_2. 展开更多

Surfactant-based oil recovery processes are employed to lower the interfacial tension in immiscible displacement processes, change the wettability of rock to a more water-wet system and emulsify the oil to displace it in subsurface porous media.Furthermore, these phenomena can reduce the capillary pressure and enhance spontaneous imbibition. The key factors affecting such immiscible displacement process are temperature, salinity and p H of the fluids, surfactant concentration and adsorption. Therefore, before any surfactant flooding process is applied, extensive studies of fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions are needed. The use of other chemicals along with surfactants in chemical enhanced oil recovery(c EOR)processes have been widely considered to exploit the synergy of individual chemicals and complement the weakness arises from each of them during immiscible displacement of fluids in porous media. Therefore, such combinations of chemicals lead to alkaline-surfactant(AS),surfactantpolymer(SP),alkaline-surfactant-polymer(ASP),and nanoparticle-surfactant(NS)flooding processes, among others. In this review study,we categorised the role and displacement mechanisms of surfactants and discussed the key factors to be considered for analysing the fluid displacement in porous media. 展开更多

One of the mechanisms of alkaline flooding relies on alkaline reaction with organic acids(saponifiable components)in the crude oil to produce an in situ surfactant called soap that lowers interfacial tensions. However, this mechanism is not quantified in the literature. For example, what is the fraction of acid components which react with alkaline solution to generate soap? How much soap can be generated? In this paper, this mechanism and related issues are discussed, analyzed or quantified. In particular, the numerical simulation approach is used. The results show that only a fraction of acid components can be converted into soap;the amount of generated soap could be low.A minimum pH(e.g.9)is needed for the acids to be converted to soap. The literature information on the effect of amount of acid components(total acid number)on oil recovery is also discussed. 展开更多
