PROBE INTO THE ROLE OF ANGLO-AMERICAN LITERATURE READING IN SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

Traditionally, literary reading is regarded as a practicalmeans to stimulate the interest of EFL students in their study ofEnglish to accelerate the development of their L2 acquisition;literary works are considered a prime resource of linguistic inputto heighten the quality of learners’ target language. Yet, the re-search findings from this study indicate that such linguistic inputcannot effectively benefit the English majors when their L2 is notwell developed to cope efficaciously with such readers. In addi-tion, research findings also indicate that many literary wordsand phrases related to another cultural and social background notonly intensify the obstacles to proper comprehension but alsolimit opportunity for practical application of this sort of linguis-tic input in the social milieu where the learners live. Therefore,how to cope with literary works in language learning and whatsort of linguistic input that can effectively stimulate the develop-ment of learners’ L2 acquisition in their own social environmentneed to be explored.

A Study on the Infiltration Methods of British and American Literature in High School English Reading Teaching

The Using Condition of Interactive Reading Strategy in Reading Scientific and Technological English Literature of Postgraduates of Engineering

In the reading process and after reading of the scientific and technological English literature for postgraduates of engineering, there are several barriers like the understanding of the vocabulary, the analyzing the complex sentences and the grasping the whole texts. This paper tries to investigate the using condition of interactive reading strategy in reading scientific and technological English literature of postgraduates of engineering. The study reveals that postgraduates of engineering frequently using some of strategies of the interactive reading strategy, but the overall using condition is only in the average level, and is not so flexible.

In order to highlight the contribution of Literature to the study of Domestic Violence,this essay will reflect on the relevance of some Anglo-American literary works,integrated in the Domestic Gothic or Domestic Noir,a subgenre of the psychological thriller,distinguished by the peculiarity of representing a woman in danger as its main character.The family can be the most commonly considered luminous space of harmony,affection and quiet domesticity,but everything can turn upside down whenever this stereotype is reversed drastically.The so-called domestic noir,a new genre popularized in 2013,deals with these dualities,demonstrating that gothic fiction has always been interested in family conflicts and domestic violence in its most varied forms,turning them into sources of terror so relevant to our time.

Why is the Use of Films in the ESL Literature Class a Good Idea?

In the 15th century,Johannes Gutenberg introduced mechanical movable type printing to Europe,causing an explo sion of knowledge that changed the world.This new way of printing enabled the masses to be exposed to works of literature that would have been inaccessible to them previously.The rapid development of technology in the 21st century presents educators with similar opportunities to expose an ever-widening circle of students to previously inaccessible works of literature.Although controversial with some,the use of films in the ESL literature classroom is one such opportunity.This paper aims to show that the use of films in the ESL literature classroom is a good idea because it is inexpensive,effective in developing listening,speaking,reading and writing skills,exposes students to authentic cultural information,helps students to absorb English,and develops the habit of reading for pleasure.Finally,some tips on the effective use of film in the ESL literature classroom are given.

Research on British and American Literature Teaching Based on Cognitive Poetics

The gradual implementation of the new curriculum reform has led to a particularly severe challenge in the teaching of English and American literature,which still adopts the traditional teaching mode.Interpretation of text is the focus of cognitive poetics,which can effectively combine people’s daily cognitive ability and literary ability,thus enlightening the teaching of British and American literature.Incorporating the concept of cognition into English and American literature textbooks can completely subvert the traditional evaluation and teaching mode in the past.It is also an effective way to improve students’humanistic quality and improve the communication between students’literary cognition and daily cognition experience.

The Use of Children＇s Literature With University English as a Foreign Language Learners in Taiwan

This paper reports findings from a longitudinal qualitative study that investigated the use of children＇s literature for Taiwan Residents University English as a Foreign Language （EFL） students＇ reading. During the course of their sophomore year, 17 students participated and each student held two to seven individual reading sessions, to which they brought a self-selected children＇s picture storybook or children＇s novel they had finished reading on their own and orally read it to the researcher. Their oral reading and the discussion of each book with the researcher were audio recorded. To gain insight into the reading progress, these oral data were categorized and analyzed in terms of mispronunciation patterns, misunderstanding of vocabulary, misinterpretation of sentence or passage, and researcher＇s guidance. General findings of the 17 participants were presented in three categories： （1） vocabulary acquisition, （2） common comprehension problems, and （3） common pronunciation problems. Further analysis of two motivated students who read five to seven books revealed that （1） these two EFL learners gradually developed conscious awareness of their own pronunciation and comprehension errors and （2） they progressively acquired better competence to apply the pronunciation tips and reading comprehension techniques provided by the researcher during previous sessions. These findings and corresponding implications are discussed and further research suggestions are made.

The Effects of Dramatization on English Literature Comprehension

The article discusses the role that the dramatization of English literature plays in addressing two major difficulties in English literary work comprehension for intermediate English learners in China,namely the linguistic difficulty and the cultural misunderstanding. By taking the dramatization of British writer Jane Austin's masterpiece Pride and Prejudice as a case study,the first part of the essay examines the role of dramatization in tackling linguistic difficulties based on the interactive reading model developed by David E. Rumelhart(1977) while the second part analyzes how an integral framework for understanding target culture is constructed through the process of dramatization with a reference to Galloway's(1992) four-stage approach to a cultural reading of authentic materials.

Poetry Translation as Rewriting:A Case Study of Zhang Zhizhong’s Reading English Literature to Translate Classical Chinese Poems

In the summer of 2023,Zhang Zhizhong’s Reading English Literature to Translate Classical Chinese Poems got published as one of the“Comparative Literature and World Literature Research Series”edited by Cao Shunqing.It presents Zhang’s latest theory and praxis of translating classical Chinese poems.As a kind of rewriting,Zhang’s translations are similar to modern English poems—with creative expressions in contemporary English,the enjambments from free verses,the form of concrete poetry,and the artistic conceptions of classical Chinese poetry,but without the rhymes in original works.How this poetry translation as rewriting generates in the constraints of ideology,poetics,and patronage is to be analyzed in the light of AndréLefevere’s rewriting theory.By examining the non-textual factors related to Zhang’s rewriting,it aims to reveal how this rewriting,as an experimental approach to poetry translation,can shed light on the global circulation of Chinese poetry.

World Literature and Translation/Reading as an Exchange of Alterity

The story of Goethe’s invention of'world literature'while reading a Chinese novel is an interesting one,for it prefigures the presence of alterity in the very formation of the concept.Whether we consider world literature as a theoretical recognition of writing to be literature or as a body of actual texts,we often frame our discussion in a language of duality:self/other,culture/cosmopolitanism,nation/world,etc.While the force of world literature has always been its alluring ideal of'one-world-ness',it is time for us to better account for its embedded alterity,which is what energizes world literature as a discipline of study in the 21stcentury.The place to start,this essay will argue,is translation/reading.Translation as reading is not only the material condition for world literature,where texts of different language congregate to form a'republic of letters',but also creates the site of an'afterlife'in which the textuality of world literature becomes visible and realized.Like writing itself,however,translation is not a transparent text for meaning.It is an exchange of alterity,but not its equivalent.The varying strategies in translation deal with alterity,thus invigorate the discourse of sameness and difference in the concept of world literature.

ENHANCING PUPILS' READING COMPREHENSION AND ATTITUDES THROUGH A WHOLE LANGUAGE-INSPIRED LITERATURE-BASED READING PROGRAM

This research examined the effects of a whole language-inspired literature-based reading program on pupils’ reading comprehension and attitudes toward reading. It employed a naturalistic research design to uncover the usefulness of such a program in improving children’s reading comprehension and attitudes. Results of the study showed that the program had a positive impact on pupils’ comprehension and attitudes toward reading. In the program, children were given ample opportunities to take an active role in their own learning. Factors believed to have contributed to their improved comprehension were: the regular independent activities, the engagement activities, the learner-centered classroom environment, the broader view of reading underlying the program, the teacher’s regular demonstrations of reading strategies and the daily reading activities. Attitudes were evidently enhanced by the supportive learning atmosphere, the many varied and interesting activities, the presence of literacy centers, the teacher’s daily reading aloud of stories, the pupils’ regular opportunities to read self-selected reading materials and activities, and the use of high quality children’s literature.

新媒介文学阅读的文化逻辑及其阐释路径

自网络文学诞生以来,学术界基于社会状况、媒介特征和文本内容等阐释途径,建构了现代性、后现代和数字现代主义三种新媒介文学阅读的文化逻辑。现代性文化逻辑是由走向现代化国家的社会现实状况决定的,但网络文学中明显可见其阅读的后现代性;网络媒介带来了读写的后现代文化逻辑,却遭受到现代性立场的批判;数字现代主义将网络媒介与网络文学区隔,主张文本内容及其主题的新现代性,陷入媒介文艺学的内在矛盾中;它们存在着文学内容和主题的困境、媒介作为中介的片面性以及语言文本的过分重视等不足。要把握新媒介文学阅读的文化逻辑,必须回到后现代的原初含义,认清其是建立在可操作、多元呈现和融合生成的界面上,且在读者、阅读文本和审美效果等方面具有“虚拟后现代”特性。新媒介文学阅读体现出阅读文化的范式转型和阐释学意义。

红色文献是红色文化的重要载体。安徽红色文献资源底蕴厚重,建设推广红色文献,传承发扬红色传统,可为实现新时代安徽高质量发展提供强大的精神动力。文章探讨了红色文献的范围界定,从人、事、物、魂四方面概括了安徽地方高校红色文献资源的特点,提出了安徽地方高校图书馆红色文献资源建设与推广的具体路径。

图式思维工具在医学英文文献阅读教学中的应用

作为未来从事医学及科研的医学生,医学英文文献阅读是其必须具备的能力,可以帮助医学生获得更多前沿知识,更好地将理论和实践结合起来。医学英文文献包含研究方法和临床疾病诊治原则,是医学生获得临床和科研知识尤其是前沿知识的主要来源。而英语基础薄弱的学生在英文文献阅读方面存在一定困难。笔者将Thinking Maps及Mind Map两大类图式思维工具运用于医学生英文文献阅读教学,帮助学生梳理英文文献,快速掌握文献阅读技巧。文章通过一篇英文文献的讲解介绍图式思维工具在英文文献教学中的应用,并采用问卷调查的方法调研该教学方法实施效果:有100%的学生表示该教学方法对英文文献的阅读有帮助,对理清英文文献主题,对文章结构及重点的把握都有很大的提高;所有学生认为有必要继续采用该教学方法进行英文文献学习。学生对图式思维工具辅助医学英文文献阅读持肯定态度。
