Taking the construction of the Smart Archives in Dongcheng District, Beijing as an example, this paper deeply explores the work objectives, functional requirements, and technical means of creating a demonstration digital archive. One is scientific planning, which is building the basic framework of digital archives. Proposed the infrastructure of “three major supports, five major platforms, and three major guarantees”. The second is to highlight key points and improve the basic functions of digital archives. Including hardware construction, software configuration, digitization of library archives, electronic archive management, sharing and utilization of digital archive information, and formulation of management systems for digital archives. The third is to strive for practical results and deepen the construction of smart libraries. This includes vigorously promoting the construction of smart archive centers, establishing a comprehensive management platform for smart libraries, and introducing new-generation information technology to achieve the integration of smart libraries in order to explore some mature experiences and methods that can be referenced for the creation of demonstration digital archives.展开更多

However, the digital revolution has also radically influenced the conservation processes surrounding art, including archiving, preserving, and remembering. This paper explores the conservation of digital (or "variable media") artworks for the future benefit of culture, with particular reference to creators and viewers of art, as well as participants in interactive artworks. More specifically, this paper focuses on the philosophical and technical approaches adopted by creators, conservators, and philosophers involved in the preservation of variable media artworks. Issues of programming, interoperability between archival systems, and enhanced public access increasingly inform the design of digital archives. Indeed, the continuously shifting technological landscape-marked by the centrality of digital technologies to everyday life-problematizes the preservation of digital art through mainstream museological paradigms. Part of this analysis of digital art conservation will be drawn from the archival philosophies of Boris Groys and Rick Prelinger.展开更多

The genealogy is one kind of digital archives. There are many researches focusing on the digitization of family history and genealogical material. There are three types of genealogy tourism in Hakka ethnic group, including homeland tourism, family temple names tourism, and common ancestor tourism. According to the genealogy curious and return intention to homeland, there are four kinds of ancestral tourists. The recognition of the role of technology and the increasing use of the internet for genealogy development has offered new opportunities to sell accommodation and other tourism-related products. The genealogy tourism marketing matrix has four alternatives of marketing strategies: well-developed genealogy tourism, enhance ancestral connection, improve tourism infrastructure, and potential genealogy tourism. Responding to this, this study proposed four key factors which are identified to have facilitated the development of genealogy tourism, including information communication technology, resources, search for identity, and postmodern forms of tourism. There are several challenging issues in linking genealogy and tourism including interpretation, marketing built genealogy, planning for genealogy, and the interdependencies between genealogy tourism and the Hakka cultural industry.展开更多

These initial sets of processed resources have successfully attracted attention from researchers and alumni who have strong interest in consulting the records. Together Archon and Digital Commons provide an ideal platform enabling the Library to reach out to more people who may also be interested in the records and have resulted in more donations to the Archives, further enriching the collection.Research limitations: Our initial efforts have created a solid foundation that we can use to develop a comprehensive archival collection showcasing the history of Lingnan University. However, the Library will need to develop a long-term strategy to formalize University archive policy for the ongoing systematic collection of university records and the effective management of born-digital data.Practical implications: Archival or historical records no longer need to be hidden or inaccessible due to lack of appropriate finding aids and search and retrieval systems. Archon provides an organizational and descriptive framework for the Library to process archival materials and create digital finding aids instantly in compliance with international archival standards, whereas IR software such as Digital Commons offers us a digital publishing platform to present the full-text content of these records online for worldwide access. We believe that as important as it is to collect and process a university’s records for historical preservation, it is equally important to make them easily available and accessible. By exploring the possibility of adopting new tools to manage old processes, we can add value while creating visibility for materials that were once hidden and inaccessible beyond our campus.Originality/value: As the first library in greater China to adopt Archon as well as use an IR platform, Digital Commons, to process archival materials and chronicle a university’s history, Lingnan University Library introduces a new approach that blends tools and resources of both archives and libraries to present a cohesive archival collection in a new digital era.展开更多

The frequent lack of a con- scious design for how collections fit together is of equal concern because it means that research libraries are not making the most of the substantial investments they are making in digital initiatives. This paper proposes a framework for a research library’s digital collections that offers integrated discovery and a set of best practices to underpin collection building, federated access, and sus- tainability. The framework’s purpose is to give information seekers a powerful and easy way to search across existing and future collections and to retrieve integrated sets of results. The paper and its recommendations are based upon research undertaken by the author and a team of librarians and technologists at Cornell University Library. The team conducted structured interviews of forty-five library staff members involved in digital collection building at Cornell, studied an inventory of the library’s more than fifty digital collections, and evaluated seven existing Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and federated search production or prototype systems. The author will discuss her team’s research and the rationale for their recommendations to: present a cohesive view of the library’s digital collections for both browsing and searching at the object level; take a programmatic (rather than project-based) approach to digital collection building; require that all new digital collections conform to library-developed and agreed-upon OAI best practices for data providers; and implement organizational structures to sustain the library’s digital collections over the long term.展开更多
