The Tempest, written by William Shakespeare, is highly influenced by The Holy Bible, the western culture and literature source. This paper utilizes Northrop Frye’s mythic archetypal criticism theory to study the play’s embodiment of the biblical archetypal model. Previous studies have only dealt with one aspect of the biblical archetype in The Tempest. This essay discusses that the characters, structure, plot, and imagery of The Tempest can all find the archetypes in The Holy Bible. It is found that the play is the Scriptures’ double to some extent, through which Shakespeare wants to spread biblical values such as morality and fraternity. 展开更多

Homosexuality is a special part of western gender studies, which has been studied by western intellectual ever since it was born. Owing to the different attitudes of various cultures in different spatial-times, it was more depressed rather than accepted, but as an objective being in histor); it shows itself a static state accompanying the whole human history. Today homosexuality has been one of the mainstreams in western intellectual movement and it is vitally important for us to give it a reasonable, precise definition in order to build up a harmonious society. This article tries to break through the bondage of material determinism and economical monism. It will be guided by the principle to delve into the human sub-consciousness to find the same essence between homosexuality and heterosexuality, to trace back to the origin of homosexuality in archetypal approach in order to reveal the anxiety of the legality of human existence and its poetic construction, which is hidden behind the cultural phenomenon. 展开更多

Tender Is the Night is Fitzgerald’s last long novel which tells a tragic story of a promising psychiatrist’s decadence and failure. In accordance with Northrop Frye’s Myth and Archetypal criticism, several archetypes are applied, mainly concentrated on image, characters and plot.In image,Apollo’s sky is archetypal image of Dick’s Gausses Beach, where Dick could present his self.On contrary,Villa Diana which belonged to Nicole reflected Moon-Goddess Artemis’s forest in Greek myth.In character,Dick’s redemption and self-exile are archetypal dealing with Jesus Christ’s redemption in Bible and Oedipus’exile in Greek myth respectively. In plot,Bible’s serpent’s seduction to tempt Eva to eat forbidden fruits is the myth and archetype of Dick’s marriage and extramarital love and Nicole’s extramarital affair.Through archetypal analyses, the tragic destiny of Americans in their pursuit of dreams can be seen. 展开更多

This article is the result of a research carried out in a private hospital of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The patient care model of the Mastology Department includes an interdisciplinary staff that aims for the comprehensive treatment of these surgical patients. The research is based on clinical approach, under the framework of Analytical Psychology. Feminine archetypal images are symbolically represented by the Main Goddesses of the Olympus. It is natural for one of these expressions to prevail throughout a woman’s life, or even in specific moments of her life, but it is important to recognize that all of them are part of the feminine soul. We can, therefore, define and understand the Goddesses from Greek Mythology symbolically as being representative of the various feminine psychogenic forces that are projected. In reality, they are internal images that can be used to help know and understand personal issues and changes that are necessary in a woman’s life, enabling personal growth and the possibility to identify herself with the more authentic elements of her being. In this work experience, the feminine force showed itself to be a force of creation, of expression and of overcoming. 展开更多

The scapegoat persecution consists of four elements:the widespread social crisis, the accusation of crime, the scapegoat selection criteria and the violence itself. The goat,Jesus,Oedipus, etc.in the Bible all acted as scapegoats. This is the persecution of all individuals, but in most cases,it is hidden in the culture in a more secretive way.In the boiling point of the initiation of scapegoat mechanism, crowd plays an important role.People usually don’t blame themselves but blame others and the whole society. They can make up all kinds of accusations and make people feel that people who are scapegoats are particularly harmful.Scapegoats are often accused of special crimes.Although the charges can be varied,it is easy to find their unity to achieve social stability at the expense of one’s interests. And the protagonist of Ian McEwan’s Atonement—Robbie will be analyzed from 4 elements of the scapegoat theory in this paper comparing with the New Testament from the perspective of transmutation and displacement of archetypes. 展开更多

In consideration of the great influence of the Bible and the Greek culture on Hardy, and the truth that Jude the Obscure has rarely been studied by employing the archetypal theory, the writer of this thesis tries to explore this novel from archetypal perspective. This thesis focuses on the archetypal themes "paradise lost" and "redemption" contained in this novel. Specifically speaking, through the comparison of the characters and the processes of losing paradise between this novel and the Bible, and the deep analysis of the physical and the mental ordeals in Jude, this thesis profoundly uncovers the inhumanity and hypocrisy of the religion and marriage in Victoria. 展开更多
