On the other hand, archives contain venerable data that can be extremely helpful to the scholars and public. However, there is no measurement tool that can measure the value and the impact of archival data. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the potentials of embracing altmetrics as a trusted measure of archival data, especially with the lack of studies on altmetrics adoption by archives and cultural heritage organizations.展开更多

CARE incorporates DATA and wiseCIO into a triad for content management and delivery (CMD) to orchestrate Anything as a Service (XaaS) by using mathematical and computational solutions to cloud-based problems. This article presents algorithmic machine learning in CARE for “DNA-like” ingredients with trivial information eliminated through deep learning to support integral content management over DATA and informative delivery on wiseCIO. In particular with algorithmic machine learning, CARE creatively incorporates express tokens for information interchange (eTokin) to promote seamless intercommunications among the CMD triad that enables Anything as a Service and empowers ordinary users to be UNIQ professionals: such as ubiquitous manager on content management and delivery, novel designer on universal interface and user-centric experience, intelligent expert for business intelligence, and quinary liaison with XaaS without explicitly coding required. Furthermore, CMD triad harnesses rapid prototyping for user interface design and propels cohesive assembly from Anything orchestrated as a Service. More importantly, CARE collaboratively as a whole promotes instant publishing over DATA, efficient presentation to end-users via wiseCIO, and diligent intelligence for business, education, and entertainment (iBEE) through highly robotic process automation.展开更多

However, the digital revolution has also radically influenced the conservation processes surrounding art, including archiving, preserving, and remembering. This paper explores the conservation of digital (or "variable media") artworks for the future benefit of culture, with particular reference to creators and viewers of art, as well as participants in interactive artworks. More specifically, this paper focuses on the philosophical and technical approaches adopted by creators, conservators, and philosophers involved in the preservation of variable media artworks. Issues of programming, interoperability between archival systems, and enhanced public access increasingly inform the design of digital archives. Indeed, the continuously shifting technological landscape-marked by the centrality of digital technologies to everyday life-problematizes the preservation of digital art through mainstream museological paradigms. Part of this analysis of digital art conservation will be drawn from the archival philosophies of Boris Groys and Rick Prelinger.展开更多

Scientific research archives are the direct, harsh but factual historical materials for recording the research process of researchers. A scientific and effective management of archives is helpful for promoting the development and progress of science and technology in colleges and universities. The archives can be better managed only if the train of thought for scientific research archives management ideas is known well.展开更多

These initial sets of processed resources have successfully attracted attention from researchers and alumni who have strong interest in consulting the records. Together Archon and Digital Commons provide an ideal platform enabling the Library to reach out to more people who may also be interested in the records and have resulted in more donations to the Archives, further enriching the collection.Research limitations: Our initial efforts have created a solid foundation that we can use to develop a comprehensive archival collection showcasing the history of Lingnan University. However, the Library will need to develop a long-term strategy to formalize University archive policy for the ongoing systematic collection of university records and the effective management of born-digital data.Practical implications: Archival or historical records no longer need to be hidden or inaccessible due to lack of appropriate finding aids and search and retrieval systems. Archon provides an organizational and descriptive framework for the Library to process archival materials and create digital finding aids instantly in compliance with international archival standards, whereas IR software such as Digital Commons offers us a digital publishing platform to present the full-text content of these records online for worldwide access. We believe that as important as it is to collect and process a university’s records for historical preservation, it is equally important to make them easily available and accessible. By exploring the possibility of adopting new tools to manage old processes, we can add value while creating visibility for materials that were once hidden and inaccessible beyond our campus.Originality/value: As the first library in greater China to adopt Archon as well as use an IR platform, Digital Commons, to process archival materials and chronicle a university’s history, Lingnan University Library introduces a new approach that blends tools and resources of both archives and libraries to present a cohesive archival collection in a new digital era.展开更多

Fatman is specifically designed for enhancing the utilization of existing storage resources and cutting down the hardware purchase cost. Two major concerned issues of the system design are maximizing the resource utilization of volunteer nodes without violating service level objectives (SLOs) and minimizing the cost without reducing the availability of archival system. Fatman has been widely deployed on tens of thousands of server nodes across several datacenters, providing more than 100 PB storage capacity and serving dozens of internal mass-data applications. The system realizes an efficient storage quota consolidation by strong isolation and budget limitation, to maximally support resource contribution without any degradation on host-level SLOs. It novelly improves data reliability by applying disk failure prediction to minish failure recovery cost, named fault-aware data management, dramatically reduces the mean time to repair (MTTR) by 76.3% and decreases file crash ratio by 35% on real-life product workload.展开更多

Taking the construction of the Smart Archives in Dongcheng District, Beijing as an example, this paper deeply explores the work objectives, functional requirements, and technical means of creating a demonstration digital archive. One is scientific planning, which is building the basic framework of digital archives. Proposed the infrastructure of “three major supports, five major platforms, and three major guarantees”. The second is to highlight key points and improve the basic functions of digital archives. Including hardware construction, software configuration, digitization of library archives, electronic archive management, sharing and utilization of digital archive information, and formulation of management systems for digital archives. The third is to strive for practical results and deepen the construction of smart libraries. This includes vigorously promoting the construction of smart archive centers, establishing a comprehensive management platform for smart libraries, and introducing new-generation information technology to achieve the integration of smart libraries in order to explore some mature experiences and methods that can be referenced for the creation of demonstration digital archives.展开更多
