In this study, the Beibu earth fissure site in the northeastern part of Weihe Basin, which contains four nearly parallel earth fissures, was studied.A long straight microtremor measuring line, containing 49 measuring points across four earth fissures, was established to investigate the dynamic response of this site using Fourier spectrum, response acceleration spectrum,Arias intensity, and HVSR analyses. The main results are as follows:(1)The fundamental frequencies of 44 measuring points obtained from HVSR analysis are concentrated within 1.67 Hz-2.25 Hz,and the existence of the earth fissures has little effect on the fundamental frequency changes.(2)There is an amplification effect near a single earth fissure. The dynamic responses are large at the measuring points near the earth fissure, and the values decrease with increasing distance from the earth fissure. In areas between two adjacent earth fissures, these values decrease and are even lower than those in sites without amplification effects.(3)In this earth fissure site, the general area(or less affected area)and affected areas were delineated based on the amplification effect. In engineering applications, construction design should avoid these affected areas and existing structures should be reinforced to satisfy the seismic fortification requirements. 展开更多

To explore the cumulative deformation effect of the dynamic response of a tunnel crossing the hauling sliding surface under earthquakes, the shaking table test was conducted in this study.Combined with the numerical calculations, this study proposed magnification of the Arias intensity(MIa)to characterize the overall local deformation damage of the tunnel lining in terms of the deformation characteristics, frequency domain, and energy.Using the time‐domain analysis method, the plastic effect coefficient(PEC)was proposed to characterize the degree of plastic deformation, and the applicability of the seismic cumulative failure effect(SCFE)was discussed. The results show that the low‐frequency component(f1 and f2≤10 Hz)and the high‐frequency component(f3 and f4>10 Hz)acceleration mainly cause global and local deformation of the tunnel lining. The local deformation caused by the high‐frequency wave has an important effect on the seismic damage of the lining. The physical meaning of PEC is more clearly defined than that of the residual strain, and the SCFE of the tunnel lining can also be defined. The SCFE of the tunnel lining includes the elastic deformation effect stage(<0.15g),the elastic–plastic deformation effect stage(0.15g–0.30g),and the plastic deformation effect stage(0.30g–0.40g).This study can provide valuable theoretical and technical support for the construction of traffic tunnels in high‐intensity earthquake areas. 展开更多

Landslides induced by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in the Longmenshan area were relatively well instrumented, which makes it possible to investigate the landslides using ground motion records. Firstly, this paper analyzes the data from Wenchuan earthquake on both regional and local site scale. The analyses show that the Newmark accumulative displacement calculated from the ground motion recorded in a particular geological hazard zone corresponds to the hazard intensity in that zone; the larger the displacement, the more serious the geologic hazard. The calculated result also shows that the displacement is related to the Arias intensity, which represents the total energy released during the earthquake at the observation site. Secondly, this paper constructs an evaluation model of Newmark displacement calculated with Arias intensities to estimate the subsequent slope failure resulting from the earthquake. The calculated results based on the model fit well with the distribution of actual landslides, suggesting that this method is useful for hazard evaluation. Therefore, this type of model can be used for estimating regional-scale distribution of earthquake-induced landslides and their associated hazards immediately after an earthquake. 展开更多

The MS8.0 Wenchuan earthquake induced severe landslide hazards. For the first time in China, large numbers of strong motion records were obtained during the Wenchuan earthquake, providing the opportunity to study the relationships between ground-motion parameters and the earthquake-induced landslides.Nearly 40 groups of records from the main shock distributed along the Longmenshan fault lines were used to carry out this study. The results appropriate to the Longmenshan area are as follows:1 The threshold of the peak ground acceleration(PGA) is about 0.7 m/s2.When the PGA reaches 2 m/s2,the landslide hazards are very serious; 2 The threshold of the peak ground velocity(PGV) is about 0.5 m/s.When the PGV reaches 1.5 m/s,severe landslide hazards will be induced; 3 The threshold for the Arias intensity(Ia) is about 0.2 m/s.When the Ia in one horizontal direction reaches 2 m/s,landslide hazards will be very serious; 4 As for the relevance order of the parameters to earthquake-induced landslides,Ia is the leading parameter, followed by PGV,and finally PGA.The results presented in this paper are consistent with the results from other studies, indicating that the threshold of the ground motion parameters for strong earthquakes is of the same order of magnitude as that of moderate earthquakes.Landslide density of local sites fluctuated with the increase of ground motion intensity if the thresholds were reached. When the upper limits are exceeded, the landslide density remains at a certain level with relatively little variation. 展开更多

Ground motion records are often used to develop ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) for a randomly oriented horizontal component, and to assess the principal directions of ground motions based on the Arias intensity tensor or the orientation of the major response axis. The former is needed for seismic hazard assessment, whereas the latter can be important for assessing structural responses under multi-directional excitations. However, a comprehensive investigation of the pseudo-spectral acceleration (PSA) and of GMPEs conditioned on different axes is currently lacking. This study investigates the principal directions of strong ground motions and their relation to the orientation of the major response axis, statistics of the PSA along the principal directions on the horizontal plane, and correlation of the PSA along the principal directions on the horizontal plane. For these, three sets of strong ground motion records, including intraplate California earthquakes, inslab Mexican earthquakes, and interface Mexican earthquakes, are used. The results indicate that one of the principal directions could be considered as quasi-vertical. By focusing on seismic excitations on the horizontal plane, the statistics of the angles between the major response axis and the major principal axis are obtained; GMPEs along the principal axes are provided and compared with those obtained for a randomly oriented horizontal component; and statistical analysis of residuals associated with GMPEs along the principal directions is carried out. 展开更多
