The output of a land use model can serve as a major input to a transportation model; conversely, transportation model output can provide a critical input to a land use model. The connection between the two models can be achieved by an accessibility measure. This paper presents an iterative approach to solving a regression-based land use model and a transportation model with combined trip distribution- assignment. A case study using data from a small urban area is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed modeling framework. Tests show that the procedures can converge, and the modeling framework can be a valuable tool for planners and decision-makers in evaluating land use policies and transportation investment strategies.展开更多

A collaborative assembly planning approach is proposed to support assembly planning in a networked environment. The working procedure is depicted and the key techniques including collaborative-planning-oriented assembly decomposition modeling, assembly assignment modeling, and sub-plans merging are addressed. By incorporating visual models at client side with assembly application models at server side, a web-based supporting environment for collaborative assembly planning has been developed using VRML and Java-EAI techniques. A case study is given to illustrate the feasibility and validity of the idea.展开更多

To date, several authors have proposed models for the “transit route network design problem” (TRNDP), and many of them use a transit assignment model as one component. However, not all models have considered the “common lines problem,” which is an essential feature in transit network assignment and is based on the concept that the fastest way to get to a destination is to take the first vehicle arriving among an “attractive” set of lines. Thus, we sought to reveal the features of considering the common lines problem by comparing results with and without considering the problem in a transit assignment model. For comparison, a model similar to a previous one was used, formulated as a bi-level optimisation problem, the upper problem of which is described as a multi-objective problem. As a result, although the solutions with and without considering the common lines showed almost the same Pareto front, we confirmed that a more direct service is provided if the common lines problem is considered whereas a less direct service is provided if it is not. With a small network case study, we found that considering the common lines problem in the TRNDP is important as it allows operators to provide more direct services.展开更多

On one hand, they are a necessity to assure the current and future functionality of the traffic network, while on the other, they are seen as a major disturbance by road users with concerns for excessive travel time delays. The impact of roadworks is usually analysed at a local level however the network-wide effects are crucial to ensure reliable travel times. Moreover the analysis usually focusses on private cars and the reliability impact on public transport services are too important to ignore. This paper investigates the impact of roadworks undertaken on a given road link over wider parts of the network and assesses travel time reliability for both cars and buses. This research involves setting up of a con- ventional network assignment model to arrive at the route choice of drivers as a result of the roadworks and then integrates the outcomes with a microsimulation model to generate space-time trajectories to arrive at travel times of individual vehicles. We adopted a reli- ability measure from the literature to compute travel time reliability of a given type of vehicle by unique origin-destination (O-D) pair combinations and also more generally to provide a wider picture at an aggregated network level. The method was tested on a real life network in England, and travel time reliability results were analysed both at the network scale and significant O-D pair level for private cars and bus routes.展开更多
