A ground-based IPS observation system has been newly implemented on a 50 m radio telescope at Miyu...Ground-based observation of Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) is an impor- tant approach for monitoring solar wind. A ground-based IPS observation system has been newly implemented on a 50 m radio telescope at Miyun station, managed by the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This observa- tion system has been constructed for the purpose of observing solar wind speed and the associated scintillation index by using the normalized cross-spectrum of a simul- taneous dual-frequency IPS measurement. The system consists of a universal dual- frequency front-end and a dual-channel multi-function back-end specially designed for IPS. After careful calibration and testing, IPS observations on source 3C 273B and 3C 279 have been successfully carried out. The preliminary observation results show that this newly-developed observation system is capable of performing IPS observa- tion. The system's sensitivity for IPS observation can reach over 0.3 Jy in terms of an IPS polarization correlator with 4 MHz bandwidth and 2 s integration time.展开更多
In combination with the authors previous obsewation about the splitting of Comet Halley in March 1986, the events involving the sharp, straight feature in the antisolar direction observed in the head of Comet Halley i...In combination with the authors previous obsewation about the splitting of Comet Halley in March 1986, the events involving the sharp, straight feature in the antisolar direction observed in the head of Comet Halley in 1910 (such as those occurring on May 14, 25 and 31, and June 2) are rediscussed The analysis leads to the following scenario: When Comet Halley explodes and splits, a fragment jettisoned or thrown off from the nucleus will, after moving in the direction of its tail, develop into a mini-comet. Although not well developed or permanent, it has its own plasma tail and, sometimes, a dust tail. If Bobrovnikoff’s definition of a secondary nucleus is assumed, then the fragment should be considered as a real secondary nucleus. It seems that the current idea of a tailward jet suggested by Sekanina and Larson is a wrong explanation for the plasma tail of a mini-comet and hence the rotation period of 52-53h for Comet Halley is展开更多
We discuss the results of the extensive efforts done over the past decade on the near environment of the central engines in Active Galactic Nuclei. The observational material is mainly based on the observations from G...We discuss the results of the extensive efforts done over the past decade on the near environment of the central engines in Active Galactic Nuclei. The observational material is mainly based on the observations from Ground based observatories in the optical, infrared and radio bands, and of space missions like GINGA, IUE, HST, CGRO, ISO, BeppoSAX and RXTE. The availability of this instrumentation with sufficient sensitivity for the study of these objects in the γ-rays, X-rays, EUV, UV as well as Optical, IR and radio domain has opened a complete new insight. Although the results have not yet lead to a complete and full understanding, they have demonstrated with a high degree of probability that the central engines of these objects are associated with massive blackholes. A strong effort will be required from the theoretical side to make certain that we can actually use the results to distinguish between the different model parameters and place the AGN’s in their proper place, not only as individual objects of interest, but also to clarify their place in the general scheme of the evolution in the Universe. The results obtained so far have not solved all the early questions, but with the promise of the new instruments a very exciting outlook exists for the future of the study of the physics of accretion in massive Black Holes.展开更多
