AV-FDTI:Audio-visual fusion for drone threat identification

In response to the evolving challenges posed by small unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs),which have the potential to transport harmful payloads or cause significant damage,we present AV-FDTI,an innovative Audio-Visual Fusion system designed for Drone Threat Identification.AV-FDTI leverages the fusion of audio and omnidirectional camera feature inputs,providing a comprehensive solution to enhance the precision and resilience of drone classification and 3D localization.Specifically,AV-FDTI employs a CRNN network to capture vital temporal dynamics within the audio domain and utilizes a pretrained ResNet50 model for image feature extraction.Furthermore,we adopt a visual information entropy and cross-attention-based mechanism to enhance the fusion of visual and audio data.Notably,our system is trained based on automated Leica tracking annotations,offering accurate ground truth data with millimeter-level accuracy.Comprehensive comparative evaluations demonstrate the superiority of our solution over the existing systems.In our commitment to advancing this field,we will release this work as open-source code and wearable AV-FDTI design,contributing valuable resources to the research community.

Integrating Audio-Visual Features and Text Information for Story Segmentation of News Video

Video data are composed of multimodal information streams including visual, auditory and textual streams, so an approach of story segmentation for news video using multimodal analysis is described in this paper. The proposed approach detects the topic-caption frames, and integrates them with silence clips detection results, as well as shot segmentation results to locate the news story boundaries. The integration of audio-visual features and text information overcomes the weakness of the approach using only image analysis techniques. On test data with 135 400 frames, when the boundaries between news stories are detected, the accuracy rate 85.8% and the recall rate 97.5% are obtained. The experimental results show the approach is valid and robust.

A Review on Audio-visual Translation Studies

This paper is dedicated to a thorough review on the audio-visual related translations from both home and abroad.In reviewing the foreign achievements on this specific field of translation studies it can shed some lights on our national audio-visual practice and research.The review on the Chinese scholars’ audio-visual translation studies is to offer the potential developing direction and guidelines to the studies and aspects neglected as well.Based on the summary of relevant studies,possible topics for further studies are proposed.

Audio-visual emotion recognition with multilayer boosted HMM

Emotion recognition has become an important task of modern human-computer interac- tion. A multilayer boosted HMM （ MBHMM ） classifier for automatic audio-visual emotion recognition is presented in this paper. A modified Baum-Welch algorithm is proposed for component HMM learn- ing and adaptive boosting （AdaBoost） is used to train ensemble classifiers for different layers （cues）. Except for the first layer, the initial weights of training samples in current layer are decided by recognition results of the ensemble classifier in the upper layer. Thus the training procedure using current cue can focus more on the difficult samples according to the previous cue. Our MBHMM clas- sifier is combined by these ensemble classifiers and takes advantage of the complementary informa- tion from multiple cues and modalities. Experimental results on audio-visual emotion data collected in Wizard of Oz scenarios and labeled under two types of emotion category sets demonstrate that our approach is effective and promising.

Application of Task-based Teaching Method to College Audio-visual English Teaching

Based on the current situation of college audio-visual English teaching in China, this article points out that the avoidance in class is a serious phenomenon in the process of college audio-visual English teaching. After further analysis and combination with the characteristics of college English audio-visual teaching in China, it puts forward the application of task-based teaching method to college audio-visual English teaching and its steps, attempting to alleviate the avoidance phenomenon in students through task-based teaching method.

Prioritized MPEG-4 Audio-Visual Objects Streaming over the DiffServ

The object-based scalable coding in MPEG-4 is investigated, and a prioritized transmission scheme of MPEG-4 audio-visual objects （AVOs） over the DiffServ network with the QoS guarantee is proposed. MPEG-4 AVOs are extracted and classified into different groups according to their priority values and scalable layers （visual importance）. These priority values are mapped to the 1P DiffServ per hop behaviors （PHB）. This scheme can selectively discard packets with low importance, in order to avoid the network congestion. Simulation results show that the quality of received video can gracefully adapt to network state, as compared with the ‘best-effort＇ manner. Also, by allowing the content provider to define prioritization of each audio-visual object, the adaptive transmission of object-based scalable video can be customized based on the content.

Resonance From the Past to the Future:Mythological Metaphors in Chinese Science Fiction Films

This paper is centered on the extent to which contemporary Chinese science fiction is related to ancient Chinese mythologies according to the previous scholarly discussion and how these ancient mythologies are utilized specifically in the futuristic narratives of modern Chinese science fiction.By referring to academic dialogues,this paper argues that ancient mythologies can be recreated in modern science fiction and create modern mythologies in futuristic narratives to present or deal with modern human fears.Based on this argument,this paper then continues to explore what kinds of modern mythologies science fiction might deliver.The Chinese film The Wandering Earth(2019)will be discussed in terms of its mythological symbols and metaphors.This paper proposes a new approach through which to reconnect past stories with futuristic narratives and builds a frame in which to contextualize ancient mythologies in contemporary Chinese culture.

A Cognitive Study of Color Metaphor in The Great Gatsby

Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby depicts the short and tragic life of Gatsby.The American Dream is the theme of this novel,and researchers have analyzed Gatsby’s American Dream from different perspectives.Many color metaphors are employed to imply the disillusionment of Gatsby’s American Dream.Guided by conceptual metaphor theory,this study uses qualitative methods.It analyzes color metaphors,finding they shape tragic images and reveal Gatsby’s love tragedy.And the findings expand metaphor research scope and enrich expectations.

A Study on the Translation Strategies of Metaphors in Song Ci from the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphor

This article employs the theory of conceptual metaphor to conduct a thorough analysis and exploration of translation strategies for the metaphors in Song Ci. Ci, a treasure in ancient Chinese literature, makes frequent use of metaphor. Its unique form of expression and abundant artistic effects often create difficulties in translation. This study selects some representative metaphor examples from Song Ci to explore the patterns and strategies in the translation process. The study reveals that in face of the metaphors in Song Ci, translators need to comprehensively apply strategies such as retaining the metaphor, replacing the metaphor, and translating the literal meaning to ensure the quality of translation while restoring the aesthetic charm of the original metaphor.

Comparative Analysis of Metaphors of “Flowers” in English and Chinese Poetry from the Perspective of Cognitive Metaphor Theory

Poetry,as a crucial form of literary expression,often employs metaphor as a common rhetorical device.According to the perspective of cognitive metaphor theory,metaphor transcends its traditional linguistic boundaries and is recognized as a profound cognitive mechanism,manifesting as a broader cognitive phenomenon.This article is based on metaphorical examples of“flowers”in Chinese and English poetry,carefully selecting representative cases for in-depth analysis.The aim is to compare the imagery of“flowers”in Chinese and English poetry,observe their similarities and differences,thereby fostering a better understanding of poetry in both languages.Through this study,we not only delve into the intricacies of metaphor within poetry but also shed light on the distinct interpretations of the symbol of“flowers”in different cultural contexts,expanding our appreciation for the cultural diversity inherent in poetry.

Multimodal Metaphors Study-Take the Expression of Negative Emotion in Emojis as an Example

Using the multimodal metaphor theory,this article studies the multimodal metaphor of emotion.Emotions can be divided into positive emotions and negative emotions.Positive emotion metaphors include happiness metaphors and love metaphors,while negative emotion metaphors include anger metaphors,fear metaphors and sadness metaphors.They intuitively represent the source domain through physical signs,sensory effects,orientation dynamics and physical presentation close to the actual life,and the emotional multimodal metaphors in emojis have narrative and social functions.

Multimodal Metaphor Analysis of German Commercials

This research examines the characteristics of multimodal metaphors utilized by German advertisers in their commercial designs.Commercial advertisements inherently incorporate a diverse array of communicative symbols,encompassing textual,visual,and auditory elements,which collaboratively function to construct metaphoric representations.Consequently,these advertisements are characterized by a rich presence of multimodal metaphors,strategically crafted to leave a lasting impression on viewers and to stimulate the purchasing intentions of targeted demographics.Employing a cognitive linguistics framework,this paper conducts a comparative analysis of the multimodal metaphors present in three exemplary German commercials:K-fee,Coca-Cola Zero,and Pure Milk.The findings illuminate the effective deployment of multimodal strategies in enhancing message transmission and fostering consumer engagement within the advertising landscape.

National Image Construction from the Perspective of Multimodal Metaphor-A Case Study of the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics

The national image is a comprehensive concept with a distinct political feature,including the international image presented to the outside world,and also encompassing the national identity of the people.With the development of globalization,international cultural communication has become a crucial part of shaping the national image,and the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics has become an important opportunity for China to showcase its national image to the world in the post-pandemic era.Based on Forceville’s multimodal metaphor theory,this paper examines the metaphorical phenomena contained in the performance and their functions,effects,and purposes in the construction of the national image.It is found that there are many scenes,images,and narratives in the opening ceremony,including war metaphor,competition metaphor,personification metaphor,and other conceptual metaphors.The focus of this paper is on multimodal metaphor in a broad sense,mainly encompassing auditory and visual modes.Through the use of these multimodal metaphors,the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics builds an image of a vibrant,peace-loving,and responsible country,which not only demonstrates China’s cultural self-confidence,but also expresses the Chinese people’s beautiful vision for the early reunification of the motherland.

Mastering Metaphors: A Possible Path to Understand Modern Poetry

Understanding modern poetry is a big problem for average readers because of all kinds of rhetorical devices filled with them,especially metaphors,which are hard for the readers to understand clearly.Thus,grasping metaphors would provide a possible solution to enhance the understanding of modern poetry.Based on the motivation to better understand modern poetry,the paper explores the 11 mechanisms of metaphors in modern poetry with examples in detail,i.e.,blending,mapping,frame shifting,image schema,conceptual integration,contextual grounding,inter-subjectivity,embodied cognition,recursiveness,juxtaposition,shape-moulding,by borrowing some concepts from Cognitive Linguistics,literary studies,and Rhetorics,which can be adopted as means and methods to understand modern poems.

Conceptual Metaphor Analysis in Advertising Slogans about Coffee Brands

This paper delves into the strategic use of conceptual metaphors in advertising slogans for coffee brands,exploring how these linguistic devices influence consumer perception and brand appeal.By employing cognitive linguistic theories,this study categorizes eight global coffee brand slogans into five distinct metaphorical patterns,revealing the underlying conceptual mappings that enhance brand messaging.The analysis underscores the importance of metaphorical language in simplifying complex ideas,evoking emotional responses,and establishing a connection between the product and the consumer’s everyday experiences.This paper concludes that the judicious application of conceptual metaphors in advertising is a powerful tool for creating memorable and impactful slogans that resonate with the target audience.

The Application of Newmark’s Metaphor Theory in Novel Translation--A Case Study of“the Jade King:History of a Chinese Muslim Family”

This paper examines the metaphorical part of“The Jade King:History of a Chinese Muslim Family”,Hoda’s novel,under the guidance of Newmark’s theory of metaphor.Newmark proposes six categories of metaphors,namely Dead Metaphor,ClichéMetaphor,Stock or Standard Metaphor,Adapted Metaphor,Recent Metaphor,Original Metaphor;and seven strategies of metaphor translation,including reproducing the same image in the target language,replacing the image in the source language with a standard target language image,translation of metaphor by simile,translation of metaphor(or simile)by simile plus sense,conversion of metaphor to sense,deletion and same metaphor combined with sense.They can provide a strong theoretical support for analyzing the expressions of metaphors in novels and their translation methods.By deeply analyzing the expressions of metaphor and its translation methods in novels,it not only helps to understand the metaphorical meaning and cultural connotation of the original works,but also helps to explore the cultural differences and challenges faced by English and Chinese bilingualism in the process of metaphor translation,thereby significantly improving the translation level and promoting the development of translation research.

Cognitive Metaphor for English-major Vocabulary and Reading Teaching

This paper makes an analysis of the cognitive nature of metaphor, expounds the view that metaphor is the necessity of cognitive process of vocabulary and reading teaching, especially for the English major. By employing some typical examples from the English-major textbooks, it advances how to train and raise specific teaching ways by utilizing metaphorical thinking.

Study of Teaching Methods of Conceptual Metaphors

The application of conceptual metaphor theories to the teaching of English reading and vocabulary provides a new field of research to foreign language teaching. This paper analyzes the possibility of metaphor teaching through a small scale case study. It shows that the individual difference should be emphasized in metaphor teaching. This paper also provides empirical study evidences for the further research in the future.
