Identity Study of English for Specific Purposes Teachers in the Context of Shifts in Public English Teaching Positioning

This study investigates the identity of English for Specific Purposes(ESP)teachers within the dynamic landscape of shifts in public English teaching positioning.Adopting a mixed-methods approach,qualitative and quantitative analyses were employed to explore the complexities of ESP teacher identity construction and adaptation.Qualitative findings revealed key themes including strong professional identity grounded in specialized expertise,the impact of changing educational policies and curriculum reforms,and the importance of cultural competence and intercultural communication.Quantitative analysis of survey data indicated high levels of job satisfaction among ESP teachers,with significant correlations between variables such as professional development participation,perceived efficacy in technology integration,and self-perceptions of identity as ESP educators.

The Omani Technical Students’Knowledge of English for Specific Purposes(ESP)Lexis and Their Attitudes Towards Learning ESP

In Oman,research on ESP has been attracting a great deal of attention in English language education over the past decade.Nevertheless,little attention has been paid to discover the relationship between the technical students’knowledge of the ESP lexis and their attitudes towards learning ESP in the Omani technical context.Therefore,this research study was conducted to do so and to explore whether the Omani technical students’knowledge of ESP lexis is predictable and is affected by a combination of their attitudes to learning ESP,their gender,and their age.Forty-eight questionnaires were distributed among participants(24 males and 24 females)aged between 24 and 27 years old.The study confirmed the positive relation between people’s knowledge and their feelings;several recommendations were proposed.In addition,the study showed that technical students’attitude towards learning ESP is an issue that must be resolved as it negatively affects improving the students’knowledge of ESP lexes.

Advocating the Need for Incorporating Critical Pedagogy and Critical Literacy in Teaching English for Specific Purposes

The axis tlhesis of this paper is that, today, it is ESP （English for Specific Purposes） in particular, rather than General English, that is the agent of the spread of globalization. Currently, ESP is witnessing an unprecedented spread, to a point of almost taking over the relevance and frequency of teaching of General English. Hereby, we look at the phenomenon of globalization as a social concept that demands of education that students are taught performativity, therefore just skills needed for the global economy functioning, and not education as a move towards change, refinement, and individuation of a personality. ESP is taught as a sort of socially neutral language, as it presumably deals only with the language of some specific science or profession. Relying on the relevant work of the acclaimed social theorists, it is our claim that as there is no socially and/or ideologically neutral language, and that this fact applies for ESP. It is because of this, that we hereby advocate a strong and urgent need for the application of critical pedagogy and critical literacy stances in the practice of ESP, and we give some broad directions of how that can be achieved.

The Analysis of Discrepancies between English for Specific Purposes Teaching and Needs Analysis of Job Requirements

This paper aims at strengthening teachers’understanding as well as optimizing future curriculum design of ESP(Eng⁃lish Specific Purpose).According to the literature ESP is one of the means for language learning and teaching,which is based on learners’needs.By adopting needs analysis,teachers are able to deeply and appropriately understand the needs from students and the real-life settings like working places in society.According to the three cases that have been reviewed,there are always discrep⁃ancies between teaching and learning in the classroom,and the real-life needs of job requirements in society.Combining the curric⁃ulum design of ESP and the method of needs analysis is an effective way to close the discrepancy.

Discussion on the Nature of English for Specific Purpose and ESP Teaching Methods

This paper clears up the scientific justification for the existence of ESP through the analysis of ESP's nature.The specific features of ESP teaching goals and focuses require us to adopt suitable ESP teaching methods for the completion of ESP teaching tasks.The ESP teaching method introduced here as "Contrastive Approach" is from our ESP teaching practice and will play a positive role in the ESP education to Chinese students.

Teacher＇s role in teaching English for Medical Purposes （EMP）

This paper has addressed key notions about ESP and examined issues in ESP curriculum design. The content of the paper was determined by a need identified based on author＇s professional experience as an EMP instructor designing and delivering the content-based language lessons--language preparation for Doctoral Degree Applicants in medicine. The author believes that in English class teachers should adopt a student-centered approach, have some knowledge of the special subjects and choose appropriate materials that fit all medical students. This approach has achieved satisfactory result in helping students know about the latest breakthroughs in biomedical fields, communicate with colleagues of other countries and contribute to foreign medical journals.

专门用途英语(ESP)测试与评估是专门用途英语课程设置中非常重要的一环。然而,长期以来,专门用途英语测试与评估却未得到应有的重视。为了使广大专门用途英语教师认识到专门用途英语测试与评估的重要性及其特点,进而提高专门用途英语课程的整体效果(无论职业英语或是学术英语课程),本文试对专门用途英语测试与评估体系的重要作用及特点进行了系统的探讨和研究。

Chinese nursing postgraduates'views on implementing outcome-oriented academic English course:a descriptive study

Background:According to previous studies on professional English course teaching,the evaluation of course teaching was positive,but the vast majorities focus on medical English literature reading,professional English vocabulary,and professional English translation.As an alternative,the course design based on academic learning needs under the outcome-oriented education/model emphasizes the improvement of students'comprehensive ability in oral expression,literature reading,writing,and academic communication.Objectives:The objective of this study was to analyze nursing postgraduates'opinions on learning the outcome-oriented academic English course.Methods:This is a cross-sectional descriptive study.A total of 150 first-year nursing postgraduates enrolled in the“Academic Professional English for Nursing Postgraduates”course.After completing the course learning,students scanned QR codes generated by the online questionnaire and completed it anonymously within 48 h.Results:The students who participated in this course strongly believed that it“helped them strengthen their English speakability”(4.8 points),“made them more confident to participate in international academic conferences and exchanges in the future”(4.8 points),and“helped them apply English more in the nursing professional field in the future”(4.7 points).Conclusions:The implementation of outcome-oriented course teaching helps students to understand the research of foreign scholars and effectively express their own research content with English as a tool.It motivates them to continuously use English for professional and academic communication.

随着我国高等教育国际化的持续深入,学术英语教学与研究的规模和需求日益增长。然而现有文献在识解学术英语内涵和教学定位方面存在诸多不确定性,对学术英语特性的认识不足在一定程度上制约了课程设置和教学内容的合理安排。本文通过文献及数据论述学术英语在话语修辞方面的学科和体裁特性,认为学术英语并不仅是通用英语在词汇和语法上的延伸,也与专业英语有所不同,它是以目标话语共同体为导向,深刻蕴涵了学科和体裁特性的语言特征、体裁资源和话语实践,其教学核心是目标话语共同体的话语修辞而非话语内容。了解学术英语的学科和体裁特性有助于增强教学针对性,提高学生掌握参与学科知识建构与表述的话语能力,深化学生对学科本体论、认识论和方法论的理解,从而使他们更好地加入学科话语共同体,构建学术身份。

新文科建设是高等外语教育改革的重要契机,专门用途英语(ESP)是英语教学危机的应变之举。ESP是与某一特定学科或行业相关的英语语言教学与研究,分为学术用途英语和行业用途英语两大类。无论是公共英语教学还是英语类专业教学,ESP教学都在一定程度上面临课程定位不够明确,以及教学体系不够成熟的发展困境。明确专门用途英语的课程定位,实施以社会需求为基、以学习需求为纲的多元主体协同育人教学策略,是新文科建设引领下的ESP破局路径。

康复医学专门用途英语课程教学思考与改革应用效果分析

目的康复医学专门用途英语课程对培养康复本科学生结合专业知识和英语去进行学术交流、发表文章、获取专业前沿动态等能力,具有重要意义。基于课程设置面临的教材匮乏、教材内容缺乏专业特色以及师资人才匮乏等难点,本教改进行针对性教学改革,以提高教学效果和人才培养质量。方法选取广州医科大学康复学系2019级学生为对照组(n=111人),2020级学生为实验组(n=112人),进行五个方面的改革,包括线上线下混合的“16+8”理论结合实践的创新性教学模式改革及实训教材编写、理论课突出康复相关4大系统及引入康复专业前沿文献的教学内容改革、教师讲解及学生文献汇报(Journal Club)的教学形式改革及师资队伍改革,注重学生三个专门用途英语实际应用能力培养改革。最后通过期末课程成绩对比两组学生的知识综合应用情况,并通过问卷调查评价实验组学生课程学习效果和课程满意度。结果本次教改采用创新性教学模式,教学内容紧贴康复专业特色,运用专业知识进行英文读、说、写能力的培养,并进行教学形式改革、教师队伍改革,提高了课程教学效果。期末成绩显示实验组学生成绩优于对照组,平均分对比具有统计学差异(P<0.001)。调查问卷显示实验组学生学习效果好、对课程及教师团队满意度高,90.91%的学生赞同新编教材贴合专业,93.23%的学生认为课程提高了专门用途英语应用能力。结论本次教改有效激发学生专业学习兴趣、提高教学效果,同时有利于促进教师的专业发展从而有助于发展和完善教学系统。本教改对其他同类课程具有借鉴参考价值。

融入英国医患沟通模式的眼科专用英语口语工作坊构建

通过介绍中国医患沟通的社会现状,对中英医患沟通培养模式、眼科医疗体系及专用英语课程体系进行对比。从中得出在医疗发展日益国际化的今天,结合中国研究生的教学大纲,以工作坊的形式将英国的医患沟通培养模式融入我国眼科研究生的专用英语口语课符合其职业发展方向。笔者进行三个融入中、英医患沟通能力培养的学术英语口语工作坊构建,提出新的思路:医患沟通能力的培养可以融入医学生任何学习阶段的任何课程中。尽管此类工作坊的实施在当前中国国情下存在诸多困难,但希望本文能为促进此类课堂的研究与推广提供参考依据。

进入数字时代,面对数字化强国、数字化教育战略布局,国家开放大学启动人工智能赋能大学英语智慧教学改革,致力于探索数字信息技术与专门用途英语教学模式深度融合的方法。在教育数字化转型背景下,基于开放教育专门用途英语教学模式内涵和构建原则,围绕课程设置与教学目标、教学内容与素材、教学方法与实施、课程评价与测试四个方面,提出专门用途英语教学模式构建框架,构建开放教育专门用途英语教学模式的实施策略,以提升开放大学英语教学成效。

ChatGPT赋能医学英语教学的应用探索及利弊分析

人工智能时代,ChatGPT为医学英语教学带来了新的机遇和挑战。基于布鲁姆认知目标,研究尝试在课前、课中、课后阶段将ChatGPT融入医学英语教学的听、说、读、写、译等教学环节,并对ChatGPT在赋能医学英语教学过程中展现出的优势与弊端进行分析与总结。在教学实践中发现,ChatGPT在具备提供个性化学习支持、高效反馈和自动评估等优点的同时,亦有引发隐私泄露、学术不端,师生关系疏离等潜在风险。ChatGPT广泛应用于教育领域,在促进医学生语言能力与自主学习能力全面发展、加快推动医学教育的数字化转型方面大有可为,但也对教师的职业素养提出了更高要求。

A Case Study of The Course Setting of Business English of South-Central University For Nationalities

With the economic globalization and the demand of the situation, many higher universities set up business English major. However, since business English is still a new major and research field in higher education, lots of problems exist in the major construction, in which the issue of course settings is a heated one. The author believes that as for the course setting of business English that is an important branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), it should be based on the demand toward business English talents from the market and the characteristics of business English.This thesis will, based on the point view of student, further discuss the issue of business English. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the course setting of business English in China is not mature enough, which has problems involved in the content and the time arrangement. The significance of this thesis is to put forward reasonable proposals in the hope of solving the problem in the course setting of business English so that the business English graduates will be fit for the needs of the society.

信息化背景下高校专门用途英语混合式教学模式构建

专门用途英语是英语专业的细分方向,区别于日常通用性英语。其固定化特点展现出目标明确、针对性强等优势,为提升学生专项英语能力提供了坚实的基础。本文在厘清专门用途英语混合式教学特点与优势的基础上,从构建线上和线下混合教学载体、开展课内和课外混合教学评价、规划混合教学路径三个方面提出专门用途英语混合式教学模式的构建策略。

Developing a curriculum model of English teaching for master's degree nursing education in a Chinese medicine university

Objective:English for Specific Purpose(ESP)is the essence for developing scientific research capacity,which is a core component for postgraduate education.The objective of this article is to develop a curriculum model for ESP of Master's level nursing education in a Chinese medicine university.Method:A three-year action research approach with continuous reflection and modification was used to develop an ESP curriculum based on the RICH model.A total of 78 students of Master's Science in Nursing enrolled in 2016-2018 and three course teachers in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine participated in the study.The ESP curriculum based on the RICH model involved research-based learning topics(R),integrated curriculum(Ⅰ),cooperative learning methods(C),and humanistic outcome(H).Results:The passing rate of the students was 100%,the excellent rate was 79.5%,with an average score of 83.16±3.43.All students were satisfied with the ESP course design and acknowledged the process of"growing up under the pressure".Four students have published five articles in the journals included by Science Citation Index(SCI).Conclusions:The study exerted a positive effect on the ESP teaching and learning and provided new ideas for the ESP curriculum integration of Master's Science in Nursing in China.

The Use of Metaphors in Scientific Texts in English： A Proposal for Improving Reading Competence

Understanding discipline-specific texts in English is a basic requirement for science students, who must develop their content knowledge and language skills. Particularly, interesting is the fact that the language of science is characterized by the use of figurative language, which appeals to the common knowledge of the world, mainly to explain, clarify, and describe intricate concepts. Metaphors are helpful for lexicalizing new concepts and meanings or extending the meanings of pre-existing words. The analysis of tropes as a means to improve foreign language learners＇ reading competence is a rather novel teaching practice in ESP （English for Specific Purposes）, implemented at the University of Rio Cuarto, Argentina. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explain the theoretical basis for teaching and developing metaphorical competence in ESP classes as a means of providing an intellectually stimulating alternative approach, and to present some teaching ideas and activities designed to familiarize students with the use of metaphorical language in scientific discourse in order to enhance their reading competence.
