A Preliminary Study on the Vitality Ordering of Minority Languages in China

Ordering the minority languages in China in terms of their vitality can help decide what priorities are in securing the most endangered ethnic languages. In view of the actual condition of the Chinese ethnic languages, this paper proposes some corresponding comprehensive indexes and ranks over 100 ethnic languages of China in terms of their vitality.

Readers' Bosom Friends——A review of China Today in all its languages

China Today was born of an English magazine and has developed into a polyglot monthly journal. Besides English, it is also published in chronological order of the foundation of each edi- tion, in Spanish, French, Arabic, German and Chinese. A second English edition, the North American edition, was established in order to comply with the particular interests of readers in North American areas. Apart from the content common to all editions, which focuses on develop- ments and achievements in China, each edition carries articles that take into account the relevant location and specific interests of its readers.

China's Ethnic Minorities and Their Own Languages

China has 56 ethnic groups, who speak a total of 120 languages. Chinese, China＇s official language, is spoken by the Han, Hui and Manethnic groups, and all the other ethnic groups have their own languages. About 15 million people speak the Zhuang lan- guage, outnumbering speakers of any other ethnic minority language. Quite a few ethnic minority groups have two or even more spoken languages. Though belonging to the same ethnic group, the ethnic Yaos who live in different places speak four different languages -the Mian, Bunu, Lajia and Yangbu. The ethnic Jingpos also have four different spoken languages the Jingpo, Zaiwa, Langsu and Leqi.

Application of the Second Language Acquisition Theory into China's English Classes

Krashen's second language acquisition theory makes great contribution to second and foreign language teaching field and has caused world-wide attention. This paper will give a systematic analysis to it. Besides, China's English teaching develops slowly. This paper makes a reference to Krashen's theory and maintains that acquisition and learning should be combined and negative affective factors should be removed. Then some effective English teaching methods are explored on the basis of the reality.

The Construct of the Story Continuation Writing Task: Insights From the China’s Standards of English Language Ability

Although the story continuation writing task(SCWT) has attracted much research attention, few studies have investigated the construct of the task, particularly with respect to which language competence it focuses on. In addition, although some studies have demonstrated that China’s Standards of English Language Ability(CSE) provides comprehensive insights into the development of Chinese learners’ English language proficiency, little research has investigated the relationship between CSE and SCWT. This study drew upon the CSE to develop an SCWT language use inventory to address the above research gaps. A total of 358 high school students were asked to complete the questionnaire, of which 277 valid responses were analyzed. Exploratory factor analysis(EFA) on the CSE-based questionnaire revealed the presence of six factors, namely language correctness, language variety, task planning, connecting-and-generating, selecting-andmining, and organizing. The strategy of connecting-and-generating was the only significant predictor of the learners’ SCWT scores. The paper also discusses the findings relating to the SCWT rating and other integrated writing tasks.

A Study of Localization of Task-Based Language Teaching in China

In view of a series of challenges since Task-Based Language Teaching(TBLT) was introduced into China, we interviewed 14 front-line teachers in primary and secondary schools about their viewpoints and classroom strategies of TBLT. The results show teachers’ willingness to use TBLT. They adopt flexible teaching procedures, apply TBLT creatively, and explore task-based language assessment. The authors argue for inclusive non-doctrinaire approaches to TBLT, and propose to construct localized TBLT theory and practice with Chinese characteristics.

Study on Language Harmony in China:Achievements,Deficiency and Prospect

Language harmony means that different languages and their dialects can coexist in harmony in the same society.It is not only a linguistic issue,but also a social phenomenon.As an independent branch of language study in China,language harmony study covers the following topics:The value of language harmony,the types of language harmony,the factors that affect language harmony,the construction path of language harmony,etc.The main research methods include:case study,a combination of synchronic and diachronic research and multidisciplinary research.Statistics results of relevant studies of language harmony in China show that,in the past fifteen years,the study of language harmony in China has grown and presents the following characteristics:The results are mainly papers(206 papers)and a few monographs(6 books);the initial stage is dominated by theoretical discussions;subsequently,the case study is in a dominant position;there are more case studies than theoretical studies in total;case study results focus on a few topics;case studies are still the current focus of study;the total number of results has shown a decreasing trend after 2008.Despite these recent findings,case studies of language harmony in China lack width and profundity,and its theoretical discussion still needs to be deepened and improved.

Foresights, Expectations and Implications of China＇s Foreign Language Proficiency Scaling and Rating Framework

The Effectiveness of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning(MALL)Applications on the Spoken English Assessments in China’s Universities

The increased ownership of mobile phone users and the advancement of mobile applications enlarge the practicality and popularity of use for learning purposes among Chinese university students.However,even if innovative functions of these applications are increasingly reported in relevant research in the education field,little research has been in the application of spoken English language.This paper examined the effect of using a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning(MALL)application“IELTS Liulishuo”(speaking English fluently in the IELTS test)as a unit of analysis to improve the English-speaking production of university students in China.The measurement of this mobile application in its effectiveness of validity and reliability is through the use of seven dimensional criteria.Although some technical and pedagogical issues challenge adoptions of MALL in some less-developed regions in China,the study showed positive effects of using a MALL oral English assessment application characterised with Automatic Speech Recognition(ASR)system on the improvement of complexity,accuracy,and fluency of English learners in China’s colleges.

On Translation Errors and Culture Deviations in China English from Angle of Language Inclusivity

Any language must have the inclusivity of its own,otherwise it can hardly get developed. The English language has got the most powerful inclusivity, which makes itself the lingua franca of the world. However, as one of language varieties, China English develops with a lot of translation errors and culture deviations, which makes itself doubtful. As a result, a view comes into being that none errors can be permitted in China English, otherwise China English couldn't exist. But finally, it turns out that translation errors and culture deviations in China English are acceptable due to the language inclusivity.

World English and the Future of English Language Teaching in China

The Second Language Acquisition of English in China: The Case Study of Chinese ESL Learners in Australia

English has been learned as the second language in China for decades.However,the study about English teaching and learning is mainly linked with development in instruction methods,while few views of English learners have been involved.This case study interviewed five Chinese overseas students in Australia,asking about their prior English learning experience in China to investigate English study in an anglophone context.The analysis of the interview reveals deficiencies of input,interaction and out-put in English classrooms in China,which contributes to the potential methods of improvements in the future.

Language Contact Based Lexis Study of China English in Traditional Chi⁃nese Medicine Translation

Objective To analyze,from the perspective of language contact,the lexical formation of China English(CE)in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)translation,and point out translation strategies of using CE to do TCM translation.Methods By selecting Chinese and English abstracts in four core journals about Chinese herbs and acupuncture published from 2017 to 2019,under the guidance of language contact,this research explores the lexical formation of CE in TCM translation,and from which some transla⁃tion strategies are summarized.Results Chinese Pinyin,TCM philosophy terms,combination of Chinese Pinyin and English vocabu⁃laries,and new English vocabularies are main methods of forming CE lexis in TCM translation;and transliteration,literal transla⁃tion,free translation,hybrid translation,and lexis creation are the translation strategies given for using CE to do TCM translation,hoping it would be useful for reference in related area.
