In order to improve the tensile property of B4Cp/Al composites, a new type of nano-Al2O3 particle (Al2O3np) reinforced B4Cp/Al + Al2O3np composites were prepared by powder metallurgy method. The Monte Carlo particle transport program (MCNP) was used to determine the influence of Al2O3np on the thermal neutron absorptivity of composites. The universal material testing machine and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to study the mechanical properties, microstructure and fracture morphology of B4Cp/Al composites. The results indicated that the neutron absorption properties of B4Cp/Al composites were not affected by the addition of nano-Al2O3 particles in the range of 1 wt%-15 wt%. The addition of Al2O3np can obviously reduce the grain size of B4Cp/Al matrix metals thus improve the tensile strength of the composites. The addition threshold of Al2O3np is about 2.5 wt%. Both B4Cp and Al2O3np change the fracture characteristics of the composites from toughness to brittleness, and the latter is more important.展开更多

It is shown that the equilibrium phases at the adiabatic temperature in the combusion system (1) are not the intended composite Al 2O 3/B 4C but other phases. Good agreement with the experimental data was achieved for the calculated adiabatic temperature. The results were discussed with respect to the elimination of the by product in the combustion synthesis. It also revealed that the reactant mixture (2) is a weak exothermic or endothermic reaction system, which can be employed in the reaction hot pressing.展开更多

Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of bulk diamond–cBN–B4C–Si composites sintered at high pressure and high temperature(HPHT, 5.2 GPa, 1620–1680 K for 3–5 min). The results show that the diamond, cBN, B4C,BxSiC, SiO2 and amorphous carbon or a little surplus Si are present in the sintered samples. The onset oxidation temperature of 1673 K in the as-synthesized sample is much higher than that of diamond, cBN, and B4C. The high thermal stability is ascribed to the covalent bonds of B–C, C–N, and the solid-solution of BxSiC formed during the sintering process. The results obtained in this work may be useful in preparing superhard materials with high thermal stability.展开更多

The results show that 1) the structure of RE Ni W P B 4C PTFE composite coatings experiences a transformation process from amorphous to mixture then to crystal as the heat treatment temperature rises; 2) incorporating of B 4C greatly increases the hardness of the coating; 3) the wear resistance of the coating is best with heat treatment for 1?h at 300?℃, which is greatly superior to that of the other traditional coatings.展开更多

Given the exothermal nature of the reaction between CuO and Al, a certain amount of CuO addition to the Al-Ti-B4C system dramatically increases the adiabatic temperature and thereby enables the complete combustion reaction in an aluminum melt(about 1,173 K). After the QSI process, the compact fabricated with CuO retains its original shape and the obtained composite exhibits sound microstructure containing reaction products of TiB2, Al3BC and B4C. The formation of such reinforcements when adding CuO contributes to enhancing the properties of the composites that show far superior hardness and elastic modulus of 3.03 GPa and 158.9 GPa, respectively, with lower coefficient of thermal expansion(9.44 ppm?K-1) compared to those with no CuO addition.展开更多

In the Ni-B_4C macroscopic diffusion welding couple a perfect diffusion welding joint was achieved. In the Ni-15 wt% B_4C sample, microstructure analyses demonstrated that loose structures occurred around the B_4C particles. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses revealed that during the SPS process, the process of diffusion bonding between Ni and B_4C particles can be divided into three stages. By employing a nano-indentation test, the room-temperature fracture toughness of the Ni matrix was found to be higher than that of the interface. The micro-diffusion bonding between Ni and B_4C particles is quite different from the Ni-B_4C reaction couple.展开更多

Effect of TiO2 addition on phase composition and microstructure of Al4SiC4/Al4O4C composites was investigated by TGA, chemical analysis, XRD and SEM. The results show that : ( 1 ) Ti in the specimens loses a little in the process of firing, all residual TiO2 transforms into TiC when the firing temperature is below 1 300℃, and the formed TiC exists stably at 1 300 - 1 700 ℃; (2) the TiO2 addition has little effect on phase composition of composites ; however, when more than 3% of TiO2 is added, the formation temperature of Al4SiC4 and Al4O4C increases from 1 500 ℃ to 1 600℃ ; ( 3 ) with the concentration of Ti^4+ increasing, Ti^4+ may react easily with Al4SiC4 and Al4O4C forrning the finite substitution solid solution resulting in lattice defect, which leads to the decomposition of Al4SiC4 at 1 700℃, the formation of more Al4O4C short fiber, and the formation of flake Al2O3 layer on suorface of the specimen.展开更多
