Biomimetic materials have emerged as attractive and competitive alternatives for tissue engineering(TE)and regenerative medicine.In contrast to conventional biomaterials or synthetic materials,biomimetic scaffolds based on natural biomaterial can offer cells a broad spectrum of biochemical and biophysical cues that mimic the in vivo extracellular matrix(ECM).Additionally,such materials have mechanical adaptability,micro-structure interconnectivity,and inherent bioactivity,making them ideal for the design of living implants for specific applications in TE and regenerative medicine.This paper provides an overview for recent progress of biomimetic natural biomaterials(BNBMs),including advances in their preparation,functionality,potential applications and future challenges.We highlight recent advances in the fabrication of BNBMs and outline general strategies for functionalizing and tailoring the BNBMs with various biological and physicochemical characteristics of native ECM.Moreover,we offer an overview of recent key advances in the functionalization and applications of versatile BNBMs for TE applications.Finally,we conclude by offering our perspective on open challenges and future developments in this rapidly-evolving field. 展开更多

Metal (Me=Fe(III), Mo(VI), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Cu(II)) 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde thiosemicarbazone complexes (MeHNT) were synthesized and used as mimic-enzyme catalysts to mimic the active group of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The results showed that Fe-HNT, Mo-HNT are effective catalysts, which have similar catalytic activity as HRP. The sequence of catalytic activities of tested biomimic peroxidas is Mo-HNT > Fe-HNT > Zn-HNT > Ni-HNT > Mn-HNT. Among them, Fe-HNT is used as a mimic-enzyme catalyst in determination of ascorbic acid and glucose by coupling the catalytic reaction of glucose oxidase. 展开更多

Biology is a rich source of great ideas that can inspire us to find successful ways to solve the challenging problems in engineering practices including those in the chemical industry. Bio-inspired chemical engineering(Bio Ch E)may be recognized as a significant branch of chemical engineering. It may consist of, but not limited to, the following three aspects: 1) Chemical engineering principles and unit operations in biological systems; 2) Process engineering principles for producing existing or developing new chemical products through living ‘devices';and 3) Chemical engineering processes and equipment that are designed and constructed through mimicking(does not have to reproduce one hundred percent) the biological systems including their physical–chemical and mechanical structures to deliver uniquely beneficial performances. This may also include the bio-inspired sensors for process monitoring. In this paper, the above aspects are defined and discussed which establishes the scope of BioChE. 展开更多

In this contribution,inspired by the excellent resource management and material transport function of leaf veins,the electrical transport function of metallized leaf veins is mimicked from the material transport function of the vein networks.By electroless copper plating on real leaf vein networks with copper thickness of only several hundred nanometre up to several micrometre,certain leaf veins can be converted to transparent conductive electrodes with an ultralow sheet resistance 100 times lower than that of state-of-the-art indium tin oxide thin films,combined with a broadband optical transmission of above 80%in the UV–VIS–IR range.Additionally,the resource efficiency of the vein-like electrode is characterized by the small amount of material needed to build up the networks and the low copper consumption during metallization.In particular,the high current density transport capability of the electrode of>6000 A cm^−2 was demonstrated.These superior properties of the vein-like structures inspire the design of high-performance transparent conductive electrodes without using critical materials and may significantly reduce the Ag consumption down to<10%of the current level for mass production of solar cells and will contribute greatly to the electrode for high power density concentrator solar cells,high power density Li-ion batteries,and supercapacitors. 展开更多

Preparation and Characteristics of Novel Fibers Based on Cellulose Acetate and Soy Lecithin for Attracting and Binding POPs

Soy lecithin (SL)-modified cellulose acetate (L-CA) fibers for use as a novel biomimic material were prepared by a dry-jet wet spinning process from a solution of the polymer in dioxin. Characteristics of the L-CA fibers, such as structural properties, water absorbance, electrical conductivity and accumulation of trace persistent organic pollutants (POPs), were examined. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of L-CA unveiled a finger-like structure, along with a thin dense surface layer like that of CA. On the basis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) observations, it was concluded that the enhancement of binding energy was optimum with 10% SL in the fiber, whereas superfluous SL led to self-assembly between the SL molecules, which weakened the binding between the SL and CA. Also, the L-CA fibers showed good water absorbance and a low charge conductivity in comparison to that of the non-modified CA fibers. Examination of the ability to accumulate POPs from water showed that L-CA is a effective candidate for the removal of micropollutants from aqueous solution. 展开更多

For high-speed moving objects,drag reduction has been a prolonged major challenge.To address this problem,passive and negative strategies have been proposed in the preceding decades.The integration of creatures and nature has been continuously perfected during biological evolution.Unique structure characteristics,material properties,and special functions of marine organisms can provide inexhaustible inspirations to solve this intractable problem of drag reduction.Therefore,a simple and low-cost laser ablation method was proposed.A multi-scale and multi-level riblet(MSLR)surface inspired by the denticles of the sharkskin was fabricated by controlling the density of the laser path and ablation times.The morphology and topographic features were characterised using an electron microscope and a scanning white-light interfering profilometer.Then,the drag reduction capacity of the bionic riblet surface was measured in a circulating water tunnel.Finally,the mechanism of drag reduction was analysed by the computational fluid dynamics(CFD)method.The results show that the MSLR surface has a stable drag reduction capacity with an increase in Reynold(Re)number which was contributed by high-low velocity stripes formed on the MSLR surface.This study can provide a reference for fabricating spatial riblets with efficient drag reduction at different values of Re and improving marine antifouling. 展开更多

Electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding materials have received considerable attention in recent years.The EMI shielding effectiveness(SE)of materials depends on not only their composition but also their microstructures.Among various microstructure prototypes,porous structures provide the advantages of low density and high terahertz wave absorption.In this study,by using carbonised wood(CW)as a template,1-mm-thick MAX@CW composites(Ti2AlC@CW,V2A1C@CW,and Cr2AlC@CW)with a porous structure were fabricated through the molten salt method.The MAX@CW composites led to the formation of a conductive network and multilayer interface,which resulted in improved EMI SE.The average EMI SE values of the three MAX@CW composites were>45 dB in the frequency of 0.6-1.6 THz.Among the composites,V2A1C@CW exhibited the highest average EMI SE of 55 dB. 展开更多

In vivo 3D fluorescent image remains a technological barrier for biologists and clinical scientists although green fluorescent protein(GFP)imaging has long been performed rather well at cellular level.Meanwhile,robust enough portable devices are also challenging lab-on-a-chip advocators who wish their designs to be nurtured by the end users.This work is dedicated to propose a conceptually innovated transparent soft PDMS avian eggshell to directly tackle the above two goals.Here,an"egg-on-a-chip"scheme is originally developed and demonstrated by a newly developed PDMS"soft"process method.Unlike its ancestor–the conventional"lab-on-a-chip"(LOC)which is basically chemically based,the current"egg-on-a-chip",intrinsically inherited with biological natures,opens a way to integrate biological parts or whole system in a miniature sized device.Such biomimics system contains much condensed environmental evolutional tensor inside than those of the existing LOC compacted with artificial components which however are quite difficult to incorporate various life factors inside.Owning unique advantages,a series of transparent PDMS whole"eggshells"have been fabricated and applied to culture avian embryos up to 17.5 days and chimeric eggshells were engineered on normal eggs.In addition,X-stage embryos were successfully initiated in such system and pre-chorioallantoic membrane was observed.Further,limitation of the present process was interpreted and potential approach to improve it was suggested.With both high optical transparency and engineering subtlety fully integrated together,the present method not only provides an ideal transparent imaging platform for studying functional embryo development including life mystery,but also promises a future strategy for"lab-on-an-egg"technology which may be important in a wide variety of either fundamental or practical areas. 展开更多

An account of the total synthesis of(±)-,(+)-heliespirone A and(±)-,(-)-heliespirone C is presented.In the first-generation total synthesis,we found rac-24a could be easily transformed to rac-heliespirones A&C in a biomimic way.Taking the disappointing diastereoselectivity of prenylation from 3 to 4,the nonselective dihydroxylation from 4 to 5 and the lenthy route in strategy A into account,we designed a different synthetic plan targeting a highly enantioselective,concise and protective-group free synthesis of heliespirones A&C.The palladium-catalyzed Michael addition and Sharpless AD played the key roles in the formation of optical lactone V,which could be easily transformed to compound I through two additional steps and the succedent operations were the same as those in the first-generation total synthesis.Our synthetic efforts indicated the bio-generation of heliespirones A&C from 24a should be a real process in nature. 展开更多
