Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) emerge as a transition between Generations III+ and IV in order to make nuclear energy more competitive with other energy sources, including renewables. In this study, the SMR NuScale, one of the most promising projects today, is investigated for its conversion into a U-233-producing reactor through the Radkowsky seed-blanket fuel element concept, applied in the Shippingport reactor, in a parametric study. Initially, a validation of the reference reactor (NuScale) was carried out with data from technical documents and papers, thus demonstrating the agreement of the computational model carried out with the SERPENT code. Then, a parametric study is carried out to define the area of the seed and blanket region, proportions of enrichment and pitch length. Finally, a comparison is made between the production of U-233, TRU reduction, burn-up extension and neutronic and thermohydraulic safety parameters. This study demonstrates an improvement in the conversion factor and a considerable reduction in the production of TRU, in addition to the production of U-233 with a low proportion of other uranium isotopes that can lead to the beginning of the thorium cycle with already consolidated technologies.展开更多

In present article the author offers a variation in which a damaged nuclear station can be quickly covered by such a cheap inflatable dome. By containing the radioactive dust from the damaged nuclear station, the danger zone is reduced to about 2 km2 rather than large regions which requires the resettlement of huge masses of people and which stops indus-try in large areas. If there is a big city (as Tokyo) near the nuclear disaster or there is already a dangerous amount of radioactive dust near a city, the city may also be covered by a large inflatable transparent Dome. The building of a gi-gantic inflatable AB Dome over an empty flat surface is not difficult. The cover is spread on a flat surface and a venti-lator (fan system) pumps air under the film cover and lifts the new dome into place but inflation takes many hours. However, to cover a city, garden, forest or other obstacle course in contrast to an empty, mowed field, the thin film cannot be easily deployed over building or trees without risking damage to it by snagging and other complications. This article proposes a new method which solves this problem. The design is a double film blanket filled by light gas such as, methane, hydrogen, or helium - although of these, methane will be the most practical and least likely to leak. Sections of this AB Blanket are lighter than air and will rise in the atmosphere. They can be made on a flat area serving as an as-sembly area and delivered by dirigible or helicopter to station at altitude over the city. Here they connect to the already assembled AB Blanket subassemblies, cover the city in an AB Dome and protect it from bad weather, chemical, bio-logical and radioactive fallout or particulates. After assembly of the dome is completed, the light gas can be replaced by (heavier but cheaper) air. Two projects for Tokyo (Japan) and Moscow (Russia) are used in this paper for sample computation.展开更多

In this article, an EM analysis method was developed to address the EM force on the SB. The plasma currents, which vary spatially and temporally, are loaded as a filament at each time point. The standard blanket module No.04(BM04) under major disruption(MD) is selected to perform the analyses. The analyses results are validated by comparing currents on the passive structure. To better understand the effects of cooling channels and slits on the EM force, the case of SB without cooling channel and the case without slits are calculated to make comparisons. Research and development(R&D) is focused on two types of breeding blanket concepts: lead–lithium ceramic breeder(LLCB) and helium-cooled ceramic breeder(HCCB) blanket systems for the DEMO reactor. As part of the ITER-TBM program, the LLCB concept will be tested in one-half of ITER port no. 2, whose materials and technologies will be tested during ITER operation. The HCCB concept is a variant of the solid breeder blanket, which is presently part of our domestic R&D program for DEMO relevant technology development. In the HCCB concept Li_2TiO_3 and beryllium are used as the tritium breeder and neutron multiplier, respectively, in the form of a packed bed having edge-on configuration with reduced activation ferritic martensitic steel as the structural material. In this paper two design schemes, mainly two different orientations of pebble beds, are discussed. In the current concept(case-1), the ceramic breeder beds are kept horizontal in the toroidal–radial direction. Due to gravity, the pebbles may settle down at the bottom and create a finite gap between the pebbles and the top cooling plate, which will affect the heat transfer between them. In the alternate design concept(case-2), the pebble bed is vertically(poloidal–radial) orientated where the side plates act as cooling plates instead of top and bottom plates. These two design variants are analyzed analytically and 2 D thermal-hydraulic simulation studies are carried out with ANSYS, using the heat loads obtained from neutronic calculations.Based on the analysis the performance is compared and details of the thermal and radiative heat transfer studies are also discussed in this paper.展开更多

Two projects for Tokyo (Japan) and Moscow (Russia) are used in this paper for sample computation.

文摘Electromagnetic(EM) load is one of the key design drivers for the blanket shield block(SB) and other in-vessel components. The results show that the slits play an important role in controlling the EM load on SB.
文摘The Indian Test Blanket Module(TBM) program in ITER is one of the major steps in its fusion reactor program towards DEMO and the future fusion power reactor vision. These two design variants are analyzed analytically and 2 D thermal-hydraulic simulation studies are carried out with ANSYS, using the heat loads obtained from neutronic calculations.Based on the analysis the performance is compared and details of the thermal and radiative heat transfer studies are also discussed in this paper.
文摘India, under its breeding blanket R&D program for DEMO,is focusing on the development of two tritium breeding blanket concepts;namely the lead-lithium-cooled ceramic breeder and the helium-cooled ceramic breeder(HCCB).The study presented in this paper focuses on the neutronic design analysis and optimization from the tritium breeding perspective of the HCCB blanket. The Indian concept has an edge-on configuration and is one of the variants of the helium-cooled solid breeder blanket concepts proposed by several partner countries in ITER.The Indian HCCB blanket having lithium titanate(Li2TiO3)as the tritium breeder and beryllium(Be)as the neutron multiplier with reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steel structure aims at utilizing the low-energy neutrons at the rear part of the blanket. The aim of the optimization study is to minimize the radial blanket thickness while ensuring tritium self-sufficiency and provide data for further neutronic design and thermal-hydraulic layout of the HCCB blanket. It is found that inboard and outboard blanket thicknesses of 40 cm and 60 cm,respectively, can give a tritium breeding ratio(TBR)>1.3,with 60%6Li enrichment, which is assumed to be sufficient to cover potential tritium losses and associated uncertainties. The results also demonstrated that the Be packing fraction(PF)has a more profound impact on the TBR as compared to 6Li enrichment and the PF of Li2TiO3.
文摘For excellent properties,Tencel is more and more popular in textile industry.Four kinds of raschel knitted blanket test samples were woven with the base-weave polyester yarns and velvet yarns, respectively including pure Tencel,Tencel/polyacrylonitrile,pure polyester, and pure polyacrylonitrile. The style of samples was evaluated with the ranking evaluation method, and its warmth retention, compressibility, antistatic properties and so on were tested.Fuzzy comprehensive was applied to the evaluation of comprehensiveness. The result shows that Tencel fiber can improve the appearance style of raschel blanket, and alter the thermal-wet comfort properties and antistatic properties. And the blanket fabric contained Tencel is durable and not dilapidated easily. But the raschel blanket used pure Tencel velvet yarn has poor properties.Compared with traditional raschel blanket, the blanket blended with Tencel/polyacrylonitrile improves a certain degree on comprehensive properties. So Tencel has certain value in acrylic knitted blanket.
