The year 2023 marks the 35^(th) anniversary of the establishment of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences(BES) by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC).This milestone provides an opportunity to review past achievements and envisage future advancements.Thirty-Five-Year Progress and Achievements In 1988,Professor Chunming Chen,the founding Director General of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM,renamed the China CDC in 2002),established the international journal BES to publish research results from Chinese scientists in English.Initially,Professor Chen,along with the renowned toxicologist Professor Frederick Coulston of Albany Medical College in the United States,jointly served as the editors-in-chief,propelling the growth and development of this pioneering journal,while the editorial team is composed exclusively of professionals from the China CDC,and the editorial office was located at the China CDC.

Those familiar with Gastrodia elata Blume(Tianma,天麻)in China will most certainly recognise the name of Xuan Zhou(周铉),the first postgraduate student of Professor Zheng-Yi Wu(吴征镒),widely respected professor of botany and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(Peng et al.,2013).Xuan Zhou(abbreviated S.Chow in taxonomic citations,also Chou,Hsüan in Wade-Giles transliterations)(Fig.1)was born in Xinzheng,in the central Chinese Province of Henan on 4 May 1926.He graduated from Tongji University in 1951.He took part in and successfully passed the first national post-graduate examination held by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1956 and became a candidate for an Associate Doctor degree(equivalent to MSc)under the tutelage of Prof.Wu.

On the“News Exception”in Personal Information Protection

Protection of personal information is a significant issue in the construction of legal systems in various countries in the information age.Introducing a balanced approach for protecting personal information is an important goal of basic human rights protection and data legislation.Personal information protection involves comprehensive considerations among various values,and the balanced structure between personal information rights and other rights systems has become the key to legislation on personal information protection.The“news exception”is a prominent example representing the balanced structure of personal information protection.As a societal instrument,news not only pursues commercial value but also advocates freedom of expression and public value.There exists a natural tension between news and personal information protection.The“news exception”of the balanced structure has become a fundamental requirement and important connotation for constructing a system for protecting personal information.The balanced structure of the“news exception”requires a reasonable definition of the concept and purpose of news,and both the self-discipline within the news industry and the judicial intervention are necessary factors.China has preliminarily completed the top-level legislative design of personal information protection through laws such as the Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China(PRC)and the Personal Information Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China.However,the balanced mechanism of the“news exception”has not yet been fully established in China.A“news exception”based on the ideas of balance and the improvement of the institutional system is the fundamental principle for the development of China’s personal information protection system.

The Arabidopsis PRCl-like ring-finger proteins are necessary for repression of embryonic traits during vegetative growth

Polycomb group genes play crucial roles in the maintenance of the transcriptionally silenced state of genes for proper cell differentiation in animals and plants. While components of the polycomb repressive complex2 （PRC2） are evolutionarily conserved and their functions are extensively studied in plants, PRCI differs considerably between animals and plants, and its functions in plants are as yet not well described. Previous studies have identified the Arabidopsis AtRINGla and AtRINGlb as homologues of the animal PRC1 subunit RING1. Here, we show that the Atringla Atringlb double mutant exhibits derepression of embryonic traits during vegetative growth. Accordingly, several key regulatory genes involved in embryogenesis and stem cell activity are ectopically expressed in the mutant. Furthermore, we show that the mutant phenotypes and increased expression of regulatory genes are enhanced by the PRC2 mutant c/f. Finally, we show that three homologues of the animal PRCl-subunit ring-finger protein BMI1, AtBMIIa, AtBMIlb and AtBMIlc, can bind with AtRINGla or AtRINGIb, and in addition, AtBMIlc can bind with LHP1. The Atbmila Atbmilb double mutant shows derepression of embryonic traits similar to that of the Atringla Atringlb double mutant. Interestingly, expression levels of AtBMIla, AtBMIlb and AtBMIlc are elevated in the Atringla Atringlb mutant and those of AtBMIlc, AtRINGla and AtRINGlb are elevated in the Atbmila Atbmilb mu- tant, suggesting a self-regulatory feedback mechanism. Taken together, our results illuminate crucial functions of the PRCl-like ring-finger components in stable repression of embryonic traits and regulatory genes for proper somatic growth.

Effect of Larval Topical Application of Juvenile Hormone on Caste Determination in the Independent-Founding Eusocial Wasp <i>Mischocyttarus consimilis</i>(Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

Eusocial wasps are excellent models for understanding polyethism and division of labor among castes in social insects. However, little is known about the mechanisms controlling caste determination in eusocial wasps. Evidence suggests that the phenotype of queens in independent-founding (IF) eusocial wasps of the subfamily Polistinae can be partly fixed in the larval stage;however, this hypothesis has not yet been investigated. In this study we evaluate whether juvenile hormone (JH) affects pre-imaginal caste determination in the IF eusocial wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Analyzing morphometric and behavioral data, we demonstrated experimentally that females emerging from larvae that were treated with JH in the third instar had a significantly larger body size, spent more time in the nest, and were subject to less physical aggression from nestmates compared with females emerging from untreated control larvae. These results indicate that phenotype differences among castes in IF eusocial wasps can be partly fixed in the pre-adult stage and influenced by variations in the JH titer.
