Simulation of Land-use Scenarios for Beijing Using CLUE-S and Markov Composite Models

This study investigated and simulated land use patterns in Beijing for the year 2000 and the year 2005 from the actual land use data for the year 1995 and the year 2000,respectively,by combining spatial land allocation simulation using the CLUE-S model,and numerical land demand prediction using the Markov model.The simulations for 2000 and 2005 were confirmed to be generally accurate using Kappa indices.Then the land-use scenarios for Beijing in 2015 were simulated assuming two modes of development:1) urban development following existing trends;and 2) under a strict farmland control.The simulations suggested that under either mode,urbanized areas would expand at the expense of land for other uses.This expansion was predicted to dominate the land-use conversions between 2005 and 2015,and was expected to be accompanied by an extensive loss of farmland.The key susceptible to land-use changes were found to be located at the central urban Beijing and the surrounding regions including Yanqing County,Changping District and Fangshan District.Also,the simulations predicted a considerable expansion of urban/suburban areas in the mountainous regions of Beijing,suggesting a need for priority monitoring and protection.

Using Impervious Surfaces to Detect Urban Expansion in Beijing of China in 2000s

The change of impervious surface area(ISA) can effectively reveal the gradual process of urbanization and act as a key index for monitoring urban expansion. Experiencing rapid growth of the built environment in the 2000 s, urban expansion of Beijing has not been fully characterized through ISA. In this study, Landsat TM images of Beijing in 2001 and 2009 were obtained, and the eight-year urban expansion process in Beijing was analyzed using the ISA extracted by means of the vegetation-imperious surface-soil(V-I-S) model. From the spatial variation in ISA, the ring structure of urban expansion in Beijing was significant during the study period, with decreasing urban density from the city center to the periphery. In the ring road analysis, the most dramatic changes of ISA were found between the fifth ring and the sixth ring. This area has experienced the most new residential development, and is currently the main source of urban expansion. The typical profile lines revealed the directional characteristics of urban expansion. The east-west profile was the most urbanized axes in Beijing, while ISA change in the east-north profile was more significant than in the other five profiles. Moreover, the transition matrix of ISA levels revealed an increase in urban density in the low density built areas; the Moran′s I index showed a clear expansion of the central urban area, which spread contiguously; and the standard deviational ellipse indicated the northeast was the dominant direction of urban expansion. These findings can provide important spatial control guidelines in the next round of national economic and social development planning, overall urban and rural planning, and land use planning.

Fusion and Classification of Beijing-1 Small Satellite Remote Sensing Image for Land Cover Monitoring in Mining Area

In order to promote the application of Beijing-1 small satellite(BJ-1) remote sensing data,the multispectral and panchromatic images captured by BJ-1 were used for land cover classification in Pangzhuang Coal Mining.An improved Intensity-Hue-Saturation(IHS) fusion algorithm is proposed to fuse panchromatic and multispectral images,in which intensity component and panchromatic image are combined using the weights determined by edge pixels in the panchromatic image identified by grey absolute correlation degree.This improved IHS fusion algorithm outper-forms traditional IHS fusion method to a certain extent,evidenced by its ability in preserving spectral information and enhancing spatial details.Dempster-Shafer(D-S) evidence theory was adopted to combine the outputs of three member classifiers to generate the final classification map with higher accuracy than that by any individual classifier.Based on this study,we conclude that Beijing-1 small satellite remote sensing images are useful to monitor and analyze land cover change and ecological environment degradation in mining areas,and the proposed fusion algorithms at data and decision levels can integrate the advantages of multi-resolution images and multiple classifiers,improve the overall accuracy and produce a more reliable land cover map.

MANAGEMENT OF MENEERE'S DISEASE—THE BEIJING TIANTAN HOSPITAL EXPERIENCE

Objective To report outcomes of nonsurgical and surgical management of Menire＇s disease at Beijing Tiantan Hospital. Methods Patients with Menire＇s disease were categorized into groups based on hearing and quality of life. Individualized management was provided, including life style modification, drug therapies, endolymphatic sac decompression and labyrin- thectomy. Treatment outcomes were evaluated during up to 24 months follow up. Results Eighty seven patients underwent life style modification and drug therapies. The vertigo control rate of Grade A and B was 76.9% and 83.8% respectively. Six patients received surgical management, including endolymphatic sac decompression （n = 5） and labyrinthecto- my （n = 1）. For these patients, the vertigo control rate of Grade A and B was 80% and 100%, respectively. Conclu- lsions Management of Meni6re＇s disease depends on several factors, i.e. severities of vertigo and hearing loss, quality of life, surgical contraindications and patient subjective desire. The treatment is drug therapies for the majority of patients, as well as life style modification. Surgical indications are rare and the least invasive procedures should be considered first. The results of surgery are generally satisfying.
