The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is an autobiographical novel that follows closely the events of the author?s life through the character of Esther Greenwood.It is set in the 1950s,a society when uniqueness and individuality were frowned upon as well as the independence of woman.This led to Esther?s descent into madness and her loss of connection with the outside world.Symbols are used throughout the novel to help portray Esther?s struggle with her identity and madness. The article analyzed two metaphors —the most influential and important symbols:the bell jar and the fig tree,to find out the bewilderment that trapped Esther,the heroine,as well as Sylvia herself,which fully explained the dilemma women had faced in the 1950s or even now. 展开更多
