Synthesis and Design of Distillation Columns for Wide-Boiling Binary Mixtures with Vapor Recompression Heat Pumps

The vapor recompression heat pump(VRHP) distillation technology offers significant improvements in energy efficiency for distillation systems with small temperature differences between the top and bottom of the column. However, the separation of wide-boiling binary mixtures leads to substantial temperature differences between the top and bottom of the column. This limits the applicability of conventional VRHP due to high capital costs and strict performance requirements of the compressor. To overcome these challenges and to accommodate compressor operating conditions, a novel synthesis and design method is introduced to integrate VRHPs with wide-boiling binary mixture distillation columns(WBMDCs). This method enables quick determination of an initial configuration for the integrated WBMDC-VRHP system and helps identify the optimum configuration with the minimum total annual cost. Two examples, namely the separation of benzene/toluene and isopropanol/chlorobenzene, are employed to derive optimum configurations of the WBMDC-VRHP and compare them with the WBMDC. A systematic comparison between the WBMDC-VRHP and WBMDC demonstrates the superior steady-state performance and economic efficiency of the WBMDC-VRHP. 展开更多

The new method is based on a simple modification for the ratio subtraction method. This modification enabled wider range of application. The proposed ratio difference method was applied for the determination of brimonidine and timolol in laboratory prepared mixtures with mean percentage recoveries 100.40±2.29 and 101.23± 1.30 respectively, and in their pharmaceutical formulation with mean percentage recoveries 101.08±0.44 and 100.66±0.52 respectively. The suggested ratio difference method was validated according to USP guidelines and can be applied for routine aualitv control testing. 展开更多

Computer simulations were performed to study the dense mixtures of passive particles and active particles in two dimensions.Two systems with different kinds of passive particles(e.g.,spherical particles and rod-like particles)were considered.At small active forces,the high-density and low-density regions emerge in both systems,indicating a phase separation.At higher active forces,the systems return to a homogeneous state with large fluctuation of particle area in contrast with the thermo-equilibrium state.Structurally,the rod-like particles accumulate loosely due to the shape anisotropy compared with the spherical particles at the high-density region.Moreover,there exists a positive correlation between Voronoi area and velocity of the particles.Additionally,a small number of active particles capably give rise to super-diffusion of passive particles in both systems when the self-propelled force is turned on. 展开更多

In this study, it was to investigate the swelling performance of novel biohybrid composite hydrogel sorbents containing acrylamide/potassium 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate/sodium alginate/bentonite in water and binary mixtures of water-solvent. Novel hydrogels were synthesized with free radical solution polymerization by using ammonium persulfate/N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine as redox initiating pair in presence of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate as crosslinker. Swelling experiments were performed in water and binary mixtures of water-solvent (acetone, methanol and tetrahydrofuran) at 25°C, gravimetrically. Some swelling and diffusion properties of the hydrogels were calculated and they were discussed for the biohybrid/hybrid hydrogel systems prepared under various formulations. It has been seen the lower equilibrium percentage swelling ratio values (62% - 124%) in all solvent compositions in comparison with the equilibrium percentage swelling ratio values in water (718% - 2055%). Consequently, the hydrogel systems developed in this study could serve as a potential device for water and water-solvent binary mixtures. 展开更多

The flow dynamics of binary particle mixtures in the fluidized bed needs to be monitored in order to optimize the related industrial processes.In this paper,electrostatic sensing and high-speed imaging are applied to measure the velocities of polyethylene and sand particles in the binary particle mixtures in fluidization.Experimental studies were conducted on a lab-scale cold circulating fluidized bed.Correlation function between electrostatic signals from upstream and downstream electrodes placed along the riser shows two peaks that represent transit times for the two types of particles.To verify the above results,high-speed imaging was adopted to capture the flow images of particle mixtures.Particle Image Velocimetry and Particle Tracking Velocimetry algorithms were utilized to process the resulted images in order to measure the velocities of polyethylene and sand particles.The reasons for two-peak correlation functions are illustrated based on the frequency spectrums of the mono-solid-phase electrostatic signals and the velocity difference between polyethylene and sand particles.Finally,comparisons on the velocities obtained from electrostatic sensing and high-speed imaging demonstrate the electrostatic sensor can roughly estimate the particle velocity of binary particle mixtures in the near wall region of the circulating fluidized bed. 展开更多

The behaviour of monolayers of copolymers of oxyethylene and oxypropylene (UH29 and UH68), polypropylene glycol (UHPPG)and their binary mixtures on air-water interface has been investigated carefully on compression-expansion cycles. The first compression isotherm is approximately an equilibrium one. In the UHPPG-UH29 and UHPPG-UH68 systems, the calculated average π-a curves based on simple additivity of the two individual components coincide with the experimental results reasonably well. It is suggested that the two components are miscible and form near-ideal solution at the air-water interface. The compression-expansion cycle experiments shows some degree of hysteresis. The order of degree of hysteresis for individual components is UH68>UH29>UHPPG. The explanation for the hysteresis is proposed. 展开更多

Characterisations of instantaneous mixing behaviours in fluidised beds with binary mixtures has many challenges.We studied the instantaneous mixing characteristics of binary mixtures in a 2-D quasi gas-solid fluidised bed using a capacitance probe method.This method enabled the quantitative assessment of instantaneous mixing behaviours,including mixing index,rate,and time.Three kinds of binary mixtures of similar size but different density were used for the transient and steady fluidisation experiments in a bubbling fluidised bed.The mixing curves of initially segregated binary mixtures were acquired,and the instantaneous characteristics for the entire process were analysed.An equation was proposed to describe the mixing process and predict the mixing degree over time.By comparing experiments with different working conditions,the effects of superficial gas velocity and density ratio on the mixing in the centre and at the wall of the fluidised bed were addressed.During the stable fluidisation stage,the axial concentration profiles of the mixtures were obtained,and the mechanisms of mixing were discussed.Results showed that the mixing level increased logarithmically with time and eventually reached a relatively stable value.Increasing the superficial gas velocity and reducing the density ratio promoted mixing and reduced mixing time.High superficial gas velocities tended to mix the mixtures well and quickly,regardless of the density ratio of the two components. 展开更多

The viscosities, η, and ultrasonic speeds, u, of pure benzene, triethylamine, (TEA) tributylamine, (TBA), and those of their binary mixtures, with benzene as common component, covering the whole composition range have been measured at 278.15 K, 283.15 K, 288.15 K, 293.15 K, 298.15 K, 303.15 K, 308.15 K, 313.15 K, and 318.15 K. From the experimental data the deviations in viscosity, △η, deviations in Gibbs free energy, AG, deviations in ultrasonic speed, △u, deviations in entropies, △S^*, and deviations in enthalpies, △H^*, of activation of viscous flow have been determined. The sign and magnitude of these parameters were found to be sensitive towards interactions prevailing in the studied systems. Further, the excess molar volumes, VE, were calculated using data for the binary mixtures. Moreover, theoretical values of viscosities and ultrasonic speeds of the binary mixtures were calculated using different empirical relations and theories. Solid-liquid fluidized beds of binary mixtures are widely used in many industries.Particle segregation may occur as particles can differ in size,density,or shape.Extensive studies have been conducted in the past to understand the effects of particlesize and density on the mixing and segregation,but the effect of particle shape has not been well addressed.Therefore,in the present work,CFD-DEM approach is employed to perform a numerical analysis of the effect of particle shape on the particle mixing and segregation phenomenon in liquid fluidization system.Different particle shapes from oblate to prolate are produced by varying aspect ratio of ellipsoids from 0.25 to 3,and eight binary mixtures of spheres and ellipsoids are examined.The results show that when oblate or prolate particles are added to spheres,the segregation takes place.The segregation degree increases with particle aspect ratio diverging from 1.0 and also liquid superficial velocity.The relationship of mixing index with aspect ratio under different liquid velocities is established,and a detailed explanation is given.It is revealed that increasing the projected area and hence the drag force results in the separation of ellipsoidal particles from spheres. 展开更多

Base on the principle of absolute quantification of size exclusion chromatography (SEC), a light scattering (LS) detector coupled with a concentration detector (refractive index detector) is utilized to determine the compositions of complicated binary mixtures. A theoretical analysis predicts that the response factors for both LS and RI detectors are linear functions with the composition of any specified polymer mixtures in the binary polymer mixtures. Two pairs of complicated binary mixtures were used to test the theory mentioned in the present paper, and the experimental results show an excellent accordance with the theory. 展开更多

Based on Schaaff's collision factor theory (CFT) in liquids, the equations for nonlinear ultrasonic parameters in both organic liquid and binary organic liquid mixtures are deduced. The nonlinear ultrasonic parameters, including pressure coefficient, temperature coefficients of ultrasonic velocity, and nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A in both organic liquid and binary organic liquid mixtures, are evaluated for comparison with the measured results and data from other sources. The equations show that the coefficient of ultrasonic velocity and nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A are closely related to molecular interactions. These nonlinear ultrasonic parameters reflect some information of internal structure and outside status of the medium or mixtures. From the exponent of repulsive forces of the molecules, several thermodynamic parameters, pressure and temperature of the medium, the nonlinear ultrasonic parameters and ultrasonic nature of the medium can be evaluated. When evaluating and studying nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A of binary organic liquid mixtures, there is no need to know the nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A of the components. Obviously, the equation reveals the connection between the nonlinear ultrasonic nature and internal structure and outside status of the mixtures more directly and distinctly than traditional mixture law for B/A, e.g. Apfel's and Sehgal's laws for liquid binary mixtures. 展开更多
