A variation of 0.3 magnitude over a time scale of about 3 hours was observed in the R passband in BL Lacertae on JD 2451827. The main results are the following: (1) In the Doppler corrected color-color ( ) diagram, XBLs and FSRQs occupy separated regions, while RBLs bridge the gap between them. These properties suggest that similar intrinsic physical processes operate in all the objects under a range of intrinsic physical conditions. (2) Our results are consistent with the results of Sambruna, Maraschi and Urry (1996) from other methods. We show the ■xox introduced by Sambruna to be a good index for describing the energy distribution because it represents the intrinsic energy distribution and includes the Doppler correction. (3) The Doppler effect of relativistic beaming is the main mechanism, and the physical differences (such as magnetic fields, electron energies) are also important complementary factors for understanding the relation between XBLs and RBLs;展开更多

The variability timescale, in particular, the optical variability timescale, is emphasized owing to its importance. Three samples of three different kinds of variations are presented, and the corresponding models to interpret them are given. The long periodic variability is paid a lot of attention because which could be explained by the eclipses of the binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs). In addition, the observed evidences, such as the periodic outbursts in OJ 287, supporting the binary SMBHs model are also presented. We study thebroadband nonthermal spectra of the two sources by using a combination of a one-zone homogeneous synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model and an inhomogeneousconical jet model, where the new external background light (EBL) model is taken intoaccount. The results show that (1) the nonthermal emissions of the two blazars, rang-ing from X-rays to VHE γ-rays, are from the homogeneous zone whereas the emis-sions in the radio bands can be explained as the radiation from the inhomogeneousconical jet; (2) a strict lower-limit EBL model can be used to explain their observedspectra well.展开更多

TeV blazars are a small group of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). They all have been observed in TeV gamma ray band, and show violent variabilities in flux at all wavelengths. So it is believed that they have abilities to produce UHECRs. To judge whether the TeV blazars can be the candidates of the origin of UHECRs, we collect the information of emission region of 38 TeV blazars, and estimate the maximum energy that the charged particle can be accelerated there. The results show that TeV blazars have abilities to accelerate cosmic rays to the energy above 1018?eV, some even higher than 1020?eV, and they may be the sources of UHECRs.展开更多

We selected 50 of the brightest blazars based on the maximum number of detections reported in the Third LAT AGN Catalog. We performed standard unbinned maximum likelihood analysis on the LAT data during the period between August 2008 and December 2016, in order to obtain the average monthly flux. After quality cuts, blazars for which at least 90% of the total flux had survived were selected for further study, and this included 19 FSRQs and 19 BL Lacs. The Anderson-Darling and χ2 tests suggest that the integrated monthly flux follows a log-normal distribution for all sources, except for three FSRQs for which neither a normal nor a log-normal distribution was preferred. A double log-normal flux distribution tendency was observed in these sources, though this has to be confirmed with improved statistics. We also found that the standard deviation of the log-normal flux distribution increases with the mean spectral index of the blazar, and can be fitted with a line of slope 0.24±0.04. We repeat our study on three additional brightest unclassified blazars to identify their flux distribution properties. Based on the features of their log-normal flux distribution, we infer these unclassified blazars may be closely associated with FSRQs. We also highlight that considering the lognormal behavior of the flux distribution of blazars, averaging their long term flux on a linear scale can largely underestimate the nominal flux and this discrepancy can propagate down to the estimation of source parameters through spectral modeling.展开更多

Although the spectral energy distribution(SED) obtained from multi-wavelength data can constrain the physical parameters of these jets, accurately estimating the Doppler factor remains difficult. To address this challenge, we assemble a comprehensive sample containing available SEDs of synchrotron and inverse Compton(IC) components, monochromatic luminosity, and broad-line region(BLR) emissions. We employ a parabolic equation to fit the synchrotron radiation SEDs,constraining jet physical parameters within the framework of a one-zone leptonic model. Our study delves into the jet properties and Doppler factor estimations, yielding the following key findings:(1) The fitting results of SED data for the entire sample reveal normal distributions of jet physical parameters for two subclasses of blazars.(2) Correlation analysis demonstrates that synchrotron peak luminosity exhibits a proportional relationship with both the radio and the γ-ray luminosities.(3) We introduce a novel method for estimating Doppler factors, which uncovers discrepancies between Doppler factors from this work and others from different techniques.展开更多

This subclass can be divided into two further subclasses of flat spectrum radio quasars(FSRQs) and BL Lacertae objects(BL Lacs) according to their emission line features. To compare the spectral properties of FSRQs and BL Lacs, the 1.4 GHz radio, optical R-band, 1 keV X-ray, and 1 GeVy-ray flux densities for 1108 Fermi blazars are calculated to discuss the properties of the six effective spectral indices of radio to optical(α_(RO)), radio to X-ray(α_(RX)), radio to y ray(α_(Ry)), optical to X-ray(α_(OX)), optical to y ray(α_(Oy)), and X-ray to y ray(α_(Xy)).The main results are as follows: For the averaged effective spectral indices, α_(OX_> α_(Oy)> α_(Xy)> α_(Ry)> α_(RX)> α_(RO) for samples of whole blazars and BL Lacs; α_(Xy)≈α_(Ry)≈α_(RX) for FSRQs and low-frequency-peaked BL Lacs(LBLs); and α_(OX)≈α_(Oy)≈α_(Xy) for high-synchrotron-frequency-peaked BL Lacs(HBLs). The distributions of the effective spectral indices involving optical emission(α_(RO), α_(OX), and α_(Oy)) for LBLs are different from those for FSRQs, but if the effective spectral index does not involve optical emission(α_(RX), α_(Ry), and α_(Xy)), the distributions for LBLs and FSRQs almost come from the same parent population. X-ray emissions from blazars include both synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) components; the IC component for FSRQs and LBLs accounts for a larger proportion than that for HBLs; and the radiation mechanism for LBLs is similar to that for FSRQs, but the radiation mechanism for HBLs is different from that for both FSRQs and LBLs in X-ray bands. The tendency of α_(Ry) decreasing from LBLs to HBLs suggests that the synchrotron self-Compton model explains the main process for highly energetic y rays in BL Lacs.展开更多

The average values of both γ-photon average energy and the photon spectral index for FSRQs, LBLs, IBLs and HBLs, follow the blazars sequence, FSRQs → LBLs →IBLs → HBLs. The slopes of correlation between photon spectral index and γ-ray luminosity for 4 the sub-classes of blazars also follow the blazars sequence. Also, there was close anti-correlations between the difference of two γ-ray photon spectral indices and the logarithm of the ratio of two γ-ray luminosities from 2FGL and 1FGL catalogs. It implies that the spectrum becomes flat when the source becomes brighter in high energetic γ-ray band. Lastly, the Kolmogolov-Smirnov test(KS test) of the average γ-photon energy showed that HBLs differs from LBLs and FSRQs, while there was no clear difference between LBLs and FSRQs, which implied that the γ-ray emissions in LBLs and FSRQs may be a result of the same emission mechanism.展开更多
