Shock formation due to flow compressibility and its interaction with boundary layers has adverse effects on aerodynamic characteristics, such as drag increase and flow separation. The objective of this paper is to appraise the practicability of weakening shock waves and, hence, reducing the wave drag in transonic flight regime using a two-dimensional jagged wall and thereby to gain an appropriate jagged wall shape for future empirical study. Different shapes of the jagged wall, including rectangular, circular, and triangular shapes, were employed. The numerical method was validated by experimental and numerical studies involving transonic flow over the NACA0012 airfoil, and the results presented here closely match previous experimental and numerical results. The impact of parameters, including shape and the length-to-spacing ratio of a jagged wall, was studied on aerodynamic forces and flow field. The results revealed that applying a jagged wall method on the upper surface of an airfoil changes the shock structure significantly and disintegrates it, which in turn leads to a decrease in wave drag. It was also found that the maximum drag coefficient decrease of around 17 % occurs with a triangular shape, while the maximum increase in aerodynamic efficiency(lift-to-drag ratio)of around 10 % happens with a rectangular shape at an angle of attack of 2.26?. 展开更多

Experimental studies were conducted in a super-large wave flume, aiming at uncovering the hydrodynamic characteristics involved in the turbulent wave boundary layer of full scale environment. An explicit formula of boundary layer thickness on rough turbulent flow was presented based on the measured velocity data of the present study and collected experimental data on wave boundary layer. It was found that the bottom wave-associated nominal stresses under the conditions of prototype scale tests suppress the vertical turbulence scattering upward over the boundary layer, which accounts for thickening of the boundary layer under wave condition.Such effect has yet not been reported in the literatures using oscillatory U-tube or small-sized wave flume. The phase inconsistency in the turbulent boundary layer to the free stream velocity(velocity immediately outside the boundary layer)is within15°,which is remarkably smaller than the results from oscillatory U-tubes,as well as the larger wave flume experiment presented by Xie et al.(2021),showing that the coarser bed would further reduce the phase lead. The intensity of the vertical turbulent component is approximately 1/2 of the horizontal component, which has larger ratio compared with the value of 1/5 reported by previous studies.Especially,it was also found that the vertical turbulent energy was approximately 3/4 of the turbulent energy in spanwise directions(y-direction).This means that the turbulent fluctuation has similar order in all three-directions(x,y,z)in a full scale environment and highlights that the turbulent components in all the three directions should not be neglected when calculating the total turbulent energy. 展开更多

A novel third-order optimized symmetric weighted essentially non-oscillatory(WENO-OS3)scheme is used to simulate the hypersonic shock wave/boundary layer interactions.Firstly, the scheme is presented with the achievement of low dissipation in smooth region and robust shock-capturing capabilities in discontinuities. The Maxwell slip boundary conditions are employed to consider the rarefied effect near the surface.Secondly, several validating tests are given to show the good resolution of the WENO-OS3 scheme and the feasibility of the Maxwell slip boundary conditions. Finally, hypersonic flows around the hollow cylinder truncated flare(HCTF)and the25°/55°sharp double cone are studied.Discussions are made on the characteristics of the hypersonic shock wave/boundary layer interactions with and without the consideration of the slip effect. The results indicate that the scheme has a good capability in predicting heat transfer with a high resolution for describing fluid structures. With the slip boundary conditions, the separation region at the corner is smaller and the prediction is more accurate than that with no-slip boundary conditions. 展开更多

At supercritical conditions a porous strip (or slot strip) placed beneath a shock wave can reduce the drag by a weaker lambda shock system, and increase the buffet boundary, even may increase the lift. Passive shock wave/boundary layer control (PSBC) for drag reduction was conducted by SC(2)-0714 supercritical wing, with emphases on parameter of porous/slot and bump, such as porous distribution, hole diameter, cavity depth, porous direction and so on. A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) optimization method coupled with ad]oint method was adopted to achieve the optimized shape and position of the bumps. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), force test and oil test with half model all indicate that PSBC with porous, slot and bump generally reduce the drag by weaker lambda shock at supercritical conditions. According to wind tunnel test results for angle of attack of 2° at Mach number M = 0.8, the porous configuration with 6.21% porosity results in a drag reduction of 0.0002 and lift-drag ratio increase of 0.2, the small bump configuration results in a drag reduction of 0.0007 and lift-drag ratio increase of 0.3. Bump normally reduce drag at design point with shock wave position being accurately computed. If bump diverges from the position of shock wave, drag will not be easily reduced. 展开更多

A one-layer time-invariant eddy viscosity model is specified to develop a mathematical model for describing the essential features of the turbulent wave boundary layer over a rough bed. The functional form of the eddy viscosity is evaluated based on computational results from a two-equation turbulence model in which the eddy viscosity varies with time and space. The present eddy viscosity model simplifies much of the mathematical complexity in many existing models. Predictions from the present model have been compared with a wide range of experimental data. It is found that the eddy viscosity model adopted in the present study is physically reasonable. 展开更多

This paper presents briefly the recent progress on study of swept shock wave/boundary layer interactions with emphasis on application of zonal analysis and correlation analysis to them. Based on the zonal analysis an overall framework of complicated interaction flow structure including both surface flowfield and space flowfield is discussed. Based on correlation analysis the conical interactions induced by four families of shock wave generators have been discussed in detail. Some control parameter and physical mechanism of conical interaction have been revealed. Finally some aspects of the problem and the prospects for future work are suggested. 展开更多

An experimental study was conducted on shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions caused by a blunt swept fin-plate configuration at Mach numbers of 5.0, 7.8, 9.9 for a Reynolds number range of (1.0.similar to 4.7) x 10(7)/m. Detailed heat transfer and pressure distributions were measured at fin deflection angles of up to 30 degrees for a sweepback angle of 67.6 degrees. Surface oil flow patterns and liquid crystal thermograms as well as schlieren pictures of fin shock shape were taken. The study shows that the flow was separated at deflection of 10 degrees and secondary separation were detected at deflection of theta greater than or equal to 20 degrees. The heat transfer and pressure distributions on flat plate showed an extensive plateau region followed by a distinct dip and local peak close to the fin foot. Measurements of the plateau pressure and heat transfer were in good agreement with existing prediction methods, but pressure and heating peak measurements at M greater than or equal to 6 were significantly lower than predicted by the simple prediction techniques at lower Mach numbers. 展开更多

The influence of a nontotal reflection on the interaction of a reflected shock wave with the boundary layer in a reflected shock tunnel has been investigated. The calculating method of the velocity, the temperature and the Mach number profiles in the boundary layer in reflected shock fixed coordinates has been obtained. To account for equilibrium real gas effects of nitrogen, the numerical results show that the minimum Mach number in the boundary layer has been moved from the wall into the boundary layer with the increasing of the incident shock Mach number. The minimum Mach number, the shock angle in the bifurcated foot and the jet velocity along the wall to the end plate are reduced owing to the Increasing of the area of nozzle throat. The numerical results are in good agreement with measurements. 展开更多

Reflections of a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) solitary wave and an envelope solitary wave are studied by using the particle-in-cell simulation method. Defining the phase shift of the reflected solitary wave, we notice that there is a phase shift of the reflected KdV solitary wave, while there is no phase shift for an envelope solitary wave. It is also noted that the reflection of a KdV solitary wave at a solid boundary is equivalent to the head-on collision between two identical amplitude solitary waves. 展开更多

Under the absolute coordinate system, the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS)equations and the k-ω SST turbulence model are solved using the finite volume method to simulate the aerodynamic characteristics of large seaplane flying with the ground-effect above wavy surface. The velocity inlet wave-making method and the volume of fluid model are used to accurately simulate the linear regular waves and to precisely capture the free surface. This paper studies the influence of the sideslip angle on the aerodynamic characteristics of large seaplane when it is cruising above wavy water. The results show that the wave surface mainly affects the pressure distribution on the lower surface of the wing. When the sideslip angle varies from 0° to 8°,the varying of frequency of aerodynamic forces is consistent with the wave encounter frequency, and both periods are 0.6 s. With the increase of the sideslip angle, the lift coefficient and the pitching moment coefficient decrease. However, when the sideslip angle is smaller than 4°,the decrease amplitude is small, and the significant decrease occurs above 4° and during the whole process of the change of sideslip angle, the aerodynamic fluctuation amplitude is almost unchanged. As the drag coefficient increases with the increase of sideslip angle, significant increase also occurs when the value is greater than4°,and the fluctuation amplitude does not show any correlations. The rolling moment coefficient and yaw moment coefficient increase with the increase of the sideslip angle, and the fluctuation amplitudes of both increase linearly with the increase of the sideslip angle. 展开更多

Shock wave/boundary layer interaction in a 24°turning angle of the compression ramp at Mach number 2.9 controlled by steady microjet is investigated using direct numerical simulation.Three different jet spacings which are termed as sparse, moderate and dense are considered, and the induced vortex system and shock structures are compared.A moderate jet spacing configuration is found to generate counter-rotating vortex pairs that transport high-momentum fluid towards the vicinity of wall and strengthen the boundary layer to resist separation, reducing the separation region. The dense jet spacing configuration creates a larger momentum deficit region, reducing the friction downstream of the corner.Analysis of pressure and pressure gradient reveals that dense jet spacing configuration reduces the intensity of separation shock. The impact of varying jet spacings on the turbulent kinetic energy transport mechanism is also investigated by decomposing the budget terms in the transport equation.Furthermore, the spectral characteristics of the separation region are studied using power spectral density and dynamic mode decomposition methods, revealing that moderate jet spacing configuration suppresses low-frequency fluctuations in the separation region. 展开更多

An extensive numerical investigation is conducted to characterize the flow separation control in a transonic compressor cascade with a porous bleed. The bleed holes are arranged on the suction surface in a single row,two staggered rows and three staggered rows. For each bleed scheme, five bleed pressure ratios are examined at an inlet Mach number of 1.0.The results indicate that the aerodynamic performance of the cascade is significantly improved by the porous bleed. For the single-row scheme, the maximum reduction in total pressure losses is 57%.For the two-staggered-row and three-staggered-row schemes, there is an optimal bleed pressure ratio of 1.0,and the maximum reductions in total pressure loss are 68% and 75%,respectively.The low loss in the cascade is due to the well-controlled boundary layer. The new local supersonic region created by the bleed hole is the key reason for the improved boundary layer. The vortex induced by side bleeding provides another mechanism for delaying flow separation.Increasing the bleed holes could create multiple local supersonic regions, which reduce the range of the adverse pressure gradient that the boundary layer needs to withstand. This is the reason why cascades with more bleed holes perform better. 展开更多

This study is devoted to the interaction between water surface waves and a thin layer of viscoelastie mud on the bottom. On the assumption that the mud layer is comparable in thickness with the wave boundary layer and is much smaller than the wavelength, a two-layer Stokes boundary layer model is adopted to determine the mud motions under the waves. Analytical expressions are derived for the near-bettom water and mud velocity fields, surface wave-damping rate, and interface wave amplitude and phase lag. Examined in particular is how these kinematic quantities may depend on the viscous and elastic properties of the mud. 展开更多

Based on a wave bottom boundary layer model and a sediment advection-diffusion model, seven turbulence schemes are compared regarding their performances in prediction of near-bed sediment suspension beneath waves above a plane bed. These turbulence algorithm., include six empirical eddy viscosity schemes and one standard two-equation k-e model. In particular, different combinations of typical empirical formulas for the eddy viscosity profile and for the wave friction factor are examined. Numerical results are compared with four laboratory data sets, consisting of one wave boundary layer hydrodynamics experiment and three sediment suspension experiments under linear waves and the Stokes second-order waves. It is shown that predictions of near-bed sediment suspension are very sensitive to the choices of the empirical formulas in turbulence schemes. Simple empirical turbulence schemes are possible to perform equally well as the two-equation k-ε model. Among the empirical schemes, the turbulence scheme, combining the exponential formula for eddy viscosity and Swart formula for wave friction factor, is the most accurate. It maintains the simplicity and yields identically good predictions as the k-ε model does in terms of the wave-averaged sediment concentration. 展开更多

It provides qualitative information mainly concerning the overall flow structure, such as the turbulent boundary layer separation, reattachment locations and the dimensionalities of the flow. Besides, it can also give understanding of the surface streamlines, vortices in separation region and the corner effect of duct flow. Reflection co- efficient and numerical tests illustrate the capability of the proposed methods. In particular, the time history treatment gives an exact boundary condition, yet with sensitivity to nu- merical implementations. A numerical approach was performed to predict the propagation and transformation of nonlinear water waves. A numerical wave flume was developed based on the non-periodic high-order spectral (HOS) method. The flume was applied to analyze the effect of wave steepness and wavelength on the propagation of nonlinear waves. The results show that for waves of low steepness, the wave profile and the wave energy spectrum are stable, and that the propagation can be predicted by the linear wave theory. For waves of moderate steepness and steep waves, the effects associated with the interactions between waves in a wave group become significant and a train of initially sinusoidal waves may drastically change its form within a short distance from its original position. 展开更多

The high intensity oscillating shock wave may induce structure resonance of a high speed vehicle. The research for the shock oscillation used to adopt empirical or semiempirical methods because the phenomenon is very complex. In this paper a theoretical solution on shock oscillating frequency due to turbulent shear layer fluctuations has been obtained from basic conservation equations. The theory of perfectly matched layer (PML) artificial boundary condition (ABC), which is characterized by absorption any wave motions with arbitrary frequency and arbitrarily incident angle, is introduced. The construction process of PML boundary based on elastodynamic partial differential equation (PDE) system is developed. Combining with velocity-stress hybrid finite element formulation, the applicability of PML boundary is investigated and the numerical reflection of PML boundary is estimated. The reflectivity of PML and multi-transmitting formula (MTF) boundary is then compared based on body wave and surface wave simulations. The results show that although PML boundary yields some reflection, its absorption performance is superior to MTF boundary in the numerical simulations of near-fault wave propagation, especially in comer and large angle grazing incidence situations. The PML boundary does not arise any unstable phenomenon and the stability of PML boundary is better than MTF boundary in hybrid finite element method. For a specified problem and analysis tolerance, the computational efficiency of PML boundary is only a little lower than MTF boundary. 展开更多
