With the gradual improvement of Chinese women’s status in the 21st century,gender studies and gender relations have become one of the hottest topics in Chinese society,which consequently prompted Chinese Women’s Cin...With the gradual improvement of Chinese women’s status in the 21st century,gender studies and gender relations have become one of the hottest topics in Chinese society,which consequently prompted Chinese Women’s Cinema to attract the attention of larger audiences.With regard to the box office performance of Chinese Women’s Cinema,there seems to be a gap in research in finding an association between women’s status and the relevant films’box office performance.The purpose of this research is to outline the underlying reasons for the changes in gender roles and gender representation in the Chinese film industry over the past few decades in order to better understand this expansive social change in the 21st century.This study provides a comprehensive analysis through the use of questionnaires to better understand society’s attitude towards gender representation within the film industry.The questionnaire findings indicate that there is a direct correlation between people’s awareness of women’s changing status and gender equality and their acceptance of materials produced by Chinese Women’s Cinema.At the some time,it highlights that the Chinese government’s support and initiatives for gender equality have had a significant impact on the general popularity of Chinese Women’s Cinema.The significance of this research is to effectively popularize Chinese Women’s Cinema culture and the box office growth by understanding the social attitude towards gender representation in the Chinese film industry and to provide relevant information about the development direction and trend of Chinese Women’s Cinema.Furthermore,this research aims to provide foundational support for gender equality and help to understand the underlying factors that society needs to promote gender equality.展开更多

Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to investigate temporal tweet patterns and their effectiveness in predicting the financial performance of a movie.Specifically,how tweet patterns are formed prior to and after a m...Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to investigate temporal tweet patterns and their effectiveness in predicting the financial performance of a movie.Specifically,how tweet patterns are formed prior to and after a movie’s release and their usefulness in predicting a movie’s success is explored.Design/methodology/approach–Volume was measured and sentiment analysis was performed on a sampleof Tweetsposted fourdays beforeand afterthe releaseof 86 movies.Thetemporal patternof tweeting for financially successful movies was compared with those that were financial disappointments.Using temporal tweet patterns,a number of machine learning models were developed and their predictive performance was compared.Findings–Results show that the temporal patterns of tweet volume,length and sentiment differ between“hits”and“busts”in the days surrounding their releases.Compared with“busts”the tweet pattern for“hits”reveal higher volume,shorter length,and more favourable sentiment.Discriminant patterns in social media features occur days in advance of a movie’s release and can be used to develop models for predicting a movie’s success.Originality/value–Analysis of temporal tweet patterns and their usefulness in predicting box office returns is the main contribution of this research.Results of this research could lead to development of analyticaltools allowingmotionpicture studiosto accurately predictand possiblyinfluencethe opening night box-office receipts prior to the release of the movie.Also,the specific temporal tweet patterns presented by this work may be applied to problems in other areas of research.展开更多

In this study, a Multi-Layer BP neural network(MLBP) with dynamic thresholds is employed to build a classifier model.As to the design of the neural network structure, theoretical guidance and plentiful experiments are...In this study, a Multi-Layer BP neural network(MLBP) with dynamic thresholds is employed to build a classifier model.As to the design of the neural network structure, theoretical guidance and plentiful experiments are combined to optimize the hidden layers' parameters which include the number of hidden layers and their node numbers.The classifier with dynamic thresholds is used to standardize the output for the first time, and it improves the robustness of the model to a high level.Finally, the classifier is applied to forecast box office revenue of a movie before its theatrical release.The comparison results with the MLP method show that the MLBP classifier model achieves more satisfactory results, and it is more reliable and effective to solve the problem.展开更多
