Laser powder bed fusion(L-PBF)of Mg alloys has provided tremendous opportunities for customized production of aeronautical and medical parts.Layer thickness(LT)is of great significance to the L-PBF process but has not been studied for Mg alloys. In this study,WE43 Mg alloy bulk cubes, porous scaffolds, and thin walls with layer thicknesses of 10,20,30,and 40μm were fabricated. The required laser energy input increased with increasing layer thickness and was different for the bulk cubes and porous scaffolds.Porosity tended to occur at the connection joints in porous scaffolds for LT40 and could be eliminated by reducing the laser energy input. For thin wall parts,a large overhang angle or a small wall thickness resulted in porosity when a large layer thicknesses was used, and the porosity disappeared by reducing the layer thickness or laser energy input.A deeper keyhole penetration was found in all occasions with porosity, explaining the influence of layer thickness, geometrical structure, and laser energy input on the porosity. All the samples achieved a high fusion quality with a relative density of over 99.5%using the optimized laser energy input. The increased layer thickness resulted to more precipitation phases, finer grain sizes and decreased grain texture. With the similar high fusion quality, the tensile strength and elongation of bulk samples were significantly improved from 257 MPa and 1.41%with the 10μm layer to 287 MPa and 15.12%with the 40μm layer,in accordance with the microstructural change. The effect of layer thickness on the compressive properties of porous scaffolds was limited. However, the corrosion rate of bulk samples accelerated with increasing the layer thickness, mainly attributed to the increased number of precipitation phases. 展开更多

CO2 laser beam welding experiment of Ti3Al-Nb alloy was conducted by adopting overlay welding, the resulting special crystallization phenomenon of welding joint was analyzed. The joints have obvious crystallizing layer phenomenon with clear bond-like contours after laser welding. The results of X-spectrofluorimetry and energy spectrum analysis indicate that the non-uniform distribution of elements exists in crystallizing layer, because the temperature gradient is an important factor that impacts the alloy crystallization behavior. Furthermore, the effects of welding heat source, welding speed, pulse frequency and welding preheat on crystallizing layer distribution were investigated. 展开更多

Physical and mechanical properties of silver-doped layers of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V and 316L steel prepared by pulsed laser deposition were studied. Metallic silver-doped coatings could be a new way for antibacterial protection in medicine. Thin films of silver and silver-doped materials were synthesized using KrF excimer laser deposition. The material was ablated from two targets, which composed either from titanium alloy with silver segments or from steel with silver segments. The concentration of silver ranged from 1.54 at.% to 4.32 at.% for steel and from 3.04 at.% to 13.05 at.% for titanium alloy. The layers properties such as silver content, structure, and adhesion were measured. Adhesion was stu- died using scratch test. 展开更多

The studied material was the commercial AZ91 magnesium alloy. The effectiveness of the alternations caused by the remelting process was verified on the basis of microscopic observation and corrosion investigations, i e, recording of potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical noise measurements and hydrogen evolution rate measurements. For the adopted range of the treatment parameters, favourable changes were observed in the surface layer such as the refinement of structure and more uniform arrangement of individual phases. As a consequence of those favourable structural changes the improvement of the corrosion resistance of the alloy was achieved in comparison to its non-remelted equivalent. For the treated material corrosion rates expressed as corrosion current densities were at least three times lower than the appropriate values for the untreated alloy comparing them for the same period of samples immersion in the test solution. The obtained results have confirmed the effectiveness of the applied surface treatment resulting in favourable changes in the structure and corrosion properties of the AZ91 magnesium alloy. 展开更多

In the present research, the gas-assisted laser(GAL)and water-jet guided laser(WGL)processing technologies were applied to machine the ultrathin kerf in the wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The microstructure, microhardness, and wear properties of the superficial layer were investigated. The results reveal that the GAL processing could machine the kerf with a high depth-to-width ratio of 12–15,but the increased processing times enhance the depth little.Due to the oxygen entrainment and relatively low heat and mass transferring efficiency, the assisted gas promotes the formation of a scaled recast layer containingβ-Ti phase and oxides, which increases the roughness to 20μm.The WGL processed kerf has a low depth-to-width ratio with a value of 1.9–2.5 and the depth could be increased by increasing the WGL processing times. With the assistance of the water jet,the remelted debris and heat could be eliminated immediately, which restrains the formation of the recast layer and heat-affected zone. The ultrathin oxide outer layer with hundreds of nanometers and ultrafineα-Ti grain inner layer are formed on the surface, which decreases the roughness to 12μm.Compared with the as-received Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the microhardness of GAL processed kerf surface is increased to 382.8 HV accompanied by residual tensile stress, while the microhardness of WGL processed kerf surface is increased to 481.6 HV accompanying with residual compressive stress. In addition, the GAL processing increases the wear rate at room temperature but decreases the wear rate at high temperatures.Comparatively, the WGL processing decreases the wear rate at room and high temperatures, simultaneously.Such wear behaviors could be ascribed to their different superficial microstructures and phase constituents. 展开更多
