Accurate and rapid analysis of both major and minor elements in alloys plays a key role in metallurgy quality control and material classification processes. A quantitative calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(CF-LIBS) analysis method, which carries out combined correction of plasma temperature and spectral intensity by using a secondorder iterative algorithm and two boundary standard samples, is proposed to realize accurate composition measurements. Experimental results show that, compared to conventional CF-LIBS analysis, the relative errors for major elements Cu and Zn and minor element Pb in the copperlead alloys has been reduced from 12%, 26% and 32% to 1.8%, 2.7% and 13.4%, respectively. The measurement accuracy for all elements has been improved substantially.展开更多

The composition change in AZ31 magnesium alloy under different laser pulse width was also investigated. The experimental results showed that CF-LIBS can obtain satisfactory quantitative or semi-quantitative results for matrix or major elements, while only qualitative analysis was possible for minor or trace elements. Moreover, it is found that the chemical composition of molten metal will change after laser processing. The concentration of magnesium in molten metal is lower than that present in the base metal. The Mg loss increases with an increase of pulse width in the laser processing. This result shows that the selective vaporization of different elements is affected by the pulse width during laser processing.展开更多

The goal of this paper is to review the improvement of accuracy in the experimental setup and spectral analysis, especially after 2010, but not limited to it. The main contents include the accurate measurement of spectral intensity, the spatial and temporal window of local thermodynamic equilibrium and the accurate calculation of temperature and electron density. Due to the requirement of one or more standard samples, the combination of standard samples and CF-LIBS is discussed as a separate section. Finally, a simple conclusion is offered to relevant researchers who want to use CF-LIBS for quantitative analysis.展开更多
