This study proposes a novel approach for estimating automobile insurance loss reserves utilizing Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques integrated with actuarial data intelligence. The model aims to address the challenges of accurately predicting insurance claim frequencies, severities, and overall loss reserves while accounting for inflation adjustments. Through comprehensive data analysis and model development, this research explores the effectiveness of ANN methodologies in capturing complex nonlinear relationships within insurance data. The study leverages a data set comprising automobile insurance policyholder information, claim history, and economic indicators to train and validate the ANN-based reserving model. Key aspects of the methodology include data preprocessing techniques such as one-hot encoding and scaling, followed by the construction of frequency, severity, and overall loss reserving models using ANN architectures. Moreover, the model incorporates inflation adjustment factors to ensure the accurate estimation of future loss reserves in real terms. Results from the study demonstrate the superior predictive performance of the ANN-based reserving model compared to traditional actuarial methods, with substantial improvements in accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, the model’s ability to adapt to changing market conditions and regulatory requirements, such as IFRS17, highlights its practical relevance in the insurance industry. The findings of this research contribute to the advancement of actuarial science and provide valuable insights for insurance companies seeking more accurate and efficient loss reserving techniques. The proposed ANN-based approach offers a promising avenue for enhancing risk management practices and optimizing financial decision-making processes in the automobile insurance sector. 展开更多

Neural Networks (NN) are the functional unit of Deep Learning and are known to mimic the behavior of the human brain to solve complex data-driven problems. Whenever we train our own neural networks, we need to take care of something called the generalization of the neural network. The performance of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) mostly depends upon its generalization capability. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach to enhance the generalization capability of artificial neural networks (ANN) using structural redundancy. A novel perspective on handling input data prototypes and their impact on the development of generalization, which could improve to ANN architectures accuracy and reliability is described. 展开更多

Artificial neural networks(ANNs)have led to landmark changes in many fields, but they still differ significantly fromthemechanisms of real biological neural networks and face problems such as high computing costs, excessive computing power, and so on.Spiking neural networks(SNNs)provide a new approach combined with brain-like science to improve the computational energy efficiency, computational architecture, and biological credibility of current deep learning applications. In the early stage of development, its poor performance hindered the application of SNNs in real-world scenarios. In recent years,SNNs have made great progress in computational performance and practicability compared with the earlier research results, and are continuously producing significant results.Although there are already many pieces of literature on SNNs,there is still a lack of comprehensive review on SNNs from the perspective of improving performance and practicality as well as incorporating the latest research results.Starting from this issue, this paper elaborates on SNNs along the complete usage process of SNNs including network construction, data processing, model training, development, and deployment, aiming to provide more comprehensive and practical guidance to promote the development of SNNs.Therefore, the connotation and development status of SNNcomputing is reviewed systematically and comprehensively from four aspects:composition structure, data set, learning algorithm,software/hardware development platform. Then the development characteristics of SNNs in intelligent computing are summarized, the current challenges of SNNs are discussed and the future development directions are also prospected. Our research shows that in the fields of machine learning and intelligent computing,SNNs have comparable network scale and performance to ANNs and the ability to challenge large datasets and a variety of tasks. The advantages of SNNs over ANNs in terms of energy efficiency and spatial-temporal data processing have been more fully exploited. And the development of programming and deployment tools has lowered the threshold for the use of SNNs.SNNs show a broad development prospect for brain-like computing. 展开更多

Eye health has become a global health concern and attracted broad attention.Over the years, researchers have proposed many state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks(CNNs)to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing ocular diseases efficiently and precisely. However, most existing methods were dedicated to constructing sophisticated CNNs,inevitably ignoring the trade-off between performance and model complexity. To alleviate this paradox, this paper proposes a lightweight yet efficient network architecture, mixeddecomposed convolutional network(MDNet),to recognise ocular diseases. In MDNet,we introduce a novel mixed-decomposed depthwise convolution method, which takes advantage of depthwise convolution and depthwise dilated convolution operations to capture low-resolution and high-resolution patterns by using fewer computations and fewer parameters. We conduct extensive experiments on the clinical anterior segment optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT),LAG,University of California San Diego, and CIFAR-100 datasets. The results show our MDNet achieves a better trade-off between the performance and model complexity than efficient CNNs including MobileNets and MixNets.Specifically, our MDNet outperforms MobileNets by 2.5%of accuracy by using 22%fewer parameters and 30%fewer computations on the AS-OCT dataset. 展开更多

Traffic in today’s cities is a serious problem that increases travel times, negatively affects the environment, and drains financial resources. This study presents an Artificial Intelligence(AI)augmentedMobile Ad Hoc Networks(MANETs)based real-time prediction paradigm for urban traffic challenges.MANETs are wireless networks that are based on mobile devices and may self-organize.The distributed nature of MANETs and the power of AI approaches are leveraged in this framework to provide reliable and timely traffic congestion forecasts. This study suggests a unique Chaotic Spatial Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Network(CSFPNN)technique to assess real-time data acquired from various sources within theMANETs.The framework uses the proposed approach to learn from the data and create predictionmodels to detect possible traffic problems and their severity in real time.Real-time traffic prediction allows for proactive actions like resource allocation, dynamic route advice, and traffic signal optimization to reduce congestion. The framework supports effective decision-making,decreases travel time, lowers fuel use,and enhances overall urban mobility by giving timely information to pedestrians, drivers, and urban planners.Extensive simulations and real-world datasets are used to test the proposed framework’s prediction accuracy, responsiveness, and scalability.Experimental results show that the suggested framework successfully anticipates urban traffic issues in real-time,enables proactive traffic management, and aids in creating smarter, more sustainable cities. 展开更多

Blasting is the live wire of mining and its operations, with air overpressure(AOp)recognised as an end product of blasting.AOp is known to be one of the most important environmental hazards of mining.Further research in this area of mining is required to help improve on safety of the working environment.Review of previous studies has shown that many empirical and artificial intelligence(AI)methods have been proposed as a forecasting model. As an alternative to the previous methods, this study proposes a new class of advanced artificial neural network known as brain inspired emotional neural network(BIENN)to predict AOp.The proposed BI-ENN approach is compared with two classical AOp predictors(generalised predictor and McKenzie formula)and three established AI methods of backpropagation neural network(BPNN),group method of data handling(GMDH),and support vector machine(SVM).From the analysis of the results,BI-ENN is the best by achieving the least RMSE,MAPE,NRMSE and highest R,VAF and PI values of 1.0941,0.8339%,0.1243%,0.8249,68.0512%and 1.2367 respectively and thus can be used for monitoring and controlling AOp. 展开更多

Skin lesions detection and classification is a prominent issue and difficult even for extremely skilled dermatologists and pathologists.Skin disease is the most common disorder triggered by fungus, viruses, bacteria, allergies, etc.Skin diseases are most dangerous and may be the cause of serious damage. Therefore,it requires to diagnose it at an earlier stage, but the diagnosis therapy itself is complex and needs advanced laser and photonic therapy. This advance therapy involvesfinancial burden and some other ill effects. Therefore,it must use artificial intelligence techniques to detect and diagnose it accurately at an earlier stage.Several techniques have been proposed to detect skin disease at an earlier stage but fail to get accuracy. Therefore, the primary goal of this paper is to classify, detect and provide accurate information about skin diseases. This paper deals with the same issue by proposing a high-performance Convolution neural network(CNN)to classify and detect skin disease at an earlier stage. The complete meth-odology is explained in different folds:firstly, the skin diseases images are pre-processed with processing techniques, and secondly, the important feature of the skin images are extracted.Thirdly, the pre-processed images are analyzed at different stages using a Deep Convolution Neural Network(DCNN).The approach proposed in this paper is simple, fast, and shows accurate results up to 98%and used to detect six different disease types. 展开更多

Artificial intelligence can be indirectly applied to the repair of peripheral nerve injury.Specifically,it can be used to analyze and process data regarding peripheral nerve injury and repair, while study findings on peripheral nerve injury and repair can provide valuable data to enrich artificial intelligence algorithms. To investigate advances in the use of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and scientific examination of peripheral nerve injury,we used CiteSpace and VOSviewer software to analyze the relevant literature included in the Web of Science from 1994–2023.We identified the following research hotspots in peripheral nerve injury and repair:(1)diagnosis,classification,and prognostic assessment of peripheral nerve injury using neuroimaging and artificial intelligence techniques, such as corneal confocal microscopy and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy;(2)motion control and rehabilitation following peripheral nerve injury using artificial neural networks and machine learning algorithms, such as wearable devices and assisted wheelchair systems;(3)improving the accuracy and effectiveness of peripheral nerve electrical stimulation therapy using artificial intelligence techniques combined with deep learning, such as implantable peripheral nerve interfaces;(4)the application of artificial intelligence technology to brain-machine interfaces for disabled patients and those with reduced mobility, enabling them to control devices such as networked hand prostheses;(5)artificial intelligence robots that can replace doctors in certain procedures during surgery or rehabilitation, thereby reducing surgical risk and complications, and facilitating postoperative recovery.Although artificial intelligence has shown many benefits and potential applications in peripheral nerve injury and repair, there are some limitations to this technology, such as the consequences of missing or imbalanced data, low data accuracy and reproducibility, and ethical issues(e.g.,privacy,data security, research transparency).Future research should address the issue of data collection,as large-scale,high-quality clinical datasets are required to establish effective artificial intelligence models.Multimodal data processing is also necessary, along with interdisciplinary collaboration,medical-industrial integration, and multicenter,large-sample clinical studies. 展开更多

Purpose:Media exaggerations of health research may confuse readers’understanding, erode public trust in science and medicine, and cause disease mismanagement. This study built artificial intelligence(AI)models to automatically identify and correct news headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings.Design/methodology/approach:We searched popular digital media outlets to collect 523 headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings. The reasons for exaggerations include:inferring causality from observational studies, inferring human outcomes from animal research, inferring distant/end outcomes(e.g.,obesity)from immediate/intermediate outcomes(e.g.,calorie intake),and generalizing findings to the population from a subgroup or convenience sample. Each headline was paired with the title and abstract of the peer-reviewed journal publication covered by the news article. We drafted an exaggeration-free counterpart for each original headline and fined-tuned a BERT model to differentiate between them.We further fine-tuned three generative language models-BART,PEGASUS,and T5 to autogenerate exaggeration-free headlines based on a journal publication’s title and abstract.Model performance was evaluated using the ROUGE metrics by comparing model-generated headlines with journal publication titles.Findings:The fine-tuned BERT model achieved 92.5%accuracy in differentiating between exaggeration-free and original headlines.Baseline ROUGE scores averaged 0.311 for ROUGE-1,0.113 for ROUGE-2,0.253 for ROUGE-L,and 0.253 ROUGE-Lsum.PEGASUS,T5,and BART all outperformed the baseline. The best-performing BART model attained 0.447 for ROUGE-1,0.221 for ROUGE-2,0.402 for ROUGE-L,and 0.402 for ROUGE-Lsum.Originality/value:This study demonstrated the feasibility of leveraging AI to automatically identify and correct news headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings. 展开更多

This study proposes a source distribution inversion convolutional neural network (SDICNN), which is deep neural network model for the inversion of complex source distributions, to solve inversion problems involving fixed-source distributions. A function is developed to obtain the distribution information of complex source terms from radiation parameters at individual sampling points in space. The SDICNN comprises two components:a fully connected network and a convolutional neural network. The fully connected network mainly extracts the parameter measurement information from the sampling points, whereas the convolutional neural network mainly completes the fine inversion of the source-term distribution. Finally, the SDICNN obtains a high-resolution source-term distribution image. In this study, the proposed source-term inversion method is evaluated based on typical geometric scenarios. The results show that, unlike the conventional fully connected neural network, the SDICNN model can extract the two-dimensional distribution features of the source terms, and its inversion results are better. In addition, the effects of the shielding mechanism and number of sampling points on the inversion process are examined. In summary, the result of this study can facilitate the accurate assessment of dose distributions in nuclear facilities. 展开更多

Backdoor attacks are emerging security threats to deep neural networks. In these attacks, adversaries manipulate the network by constructing training samples embedded with backdoor triggers. The backdoored model performs as expected on clean test samples but consistently misclassifies samples containing the backdoor trigger as a specific target label. While quantum neural networks(QNNs)have shown promise in surpassing their classical counterparts in certain machine learning tasks, they are also susceptible to backdoor attacks. However, current attacks on QNNs are constrained by the adversary's understanding of the model structure and specific encoding methods.Given the diversity of encoding methods and model structures in QNNs,the effectiveness of such backdoor attacks remains uncertain. In this paper,we propose an algorithm that leverages dataset-based optimization to initiate backdoor attacks.A malicious adversary can embed backdoor triggers into a QNN model by poisoning only a small portion of the data. The victim QNN maintains high accuracy on clean test samples without the trigger but outputs the target label set by the adversary when predicting samples with the trigger.Furthermore, our proposed attack cannot be easily resisted by existing backdoor detection methods. 展开更多

Wheat is the most important cereal crop, and its low production incurs import pressure on the economy. It fulfills a significant portion of the daily energy requirements of the human body. The wheat disease is one of the major factors that result in low production and negatively affects the national economy. Thus, timely detection of wheat diseases is necessary for improving production. The CNN-based architectures showed tremendous achievement in the image-based classification and prediction of crop diseases. However, these models are computationally expensive and need a large amount of training data.In this research,a light weighted modified CNN architecture is proposed that uses eight layers particularly, three convolutional layers, three SoftMax layers, and two flattened layers,to detect wheat diseases effectively. The high-resolution images were collected from the fields in Azad Kashmir(Pakistan)and manually annotated by three human experts. The convolutional layers use 16,32,and 64 filters.Every filter uses a 3×3 kernel size. The strides for all convolutional layers are set to 1.In this research, three different variants of datasets are used. These variants S1-70%:15%:15%,S2-75%:15%:10%,and S3-80%:10%:10%(train:validation:test)are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. The extensive experiments revealed that the S3 performed better than S1 and S2 datasets with 93%accuracy.The experiment also concludes that a more extensive training set with high-resolution images can detect wheat diseases more accurately. 展开更多

Agricultural system is very complex since it deals with large data situation which comes from a number of factors. A lot of techniques and approaches have been used to identify any interactions between factors that affecting yields with the crop performances. The application of neural network to the task of solving non-linear and complex systems is promising. This paper presents a review on the use of artificial neural network (ANN) in predicting crop yield using various crop performance factors. General overview on the application of ANN and the basic concept of neural network architecture are also presented. From the literature, it has been shown that ANN provides better interpretation of crop variability compared to the other methods. 展开更多
