This paper analyzes Park Saengkwang(1904-1985)’s artwork,created in the 1980s and influenced by Musok,Korean Shamanism.It explores Musok’s thematic significance in the development of his distinctive style and the in...This paper analyzes Park Saengkwang(1904-1985)’s artwork,created in the 1980s and influenced by Musok,Korean Shamanism.It explores Musok’s thematic significance in the development of his distinctive style and the inspiration behind his stylistic changes.Park’s ink paintings are done in bold and intense colors and create an intriguing,mysterious mood,inviting the viewers to the primordial visual experience and exposing its viewers to Korean Shamanism,which has endured the perception that fluctuated between positive and negative throughout Korean history.The practice became a fitting cultural emblem associated with the national identity during the 1970s and 1980s,and thus became a way for Park to explicitly articulate his cultural roots,creating a visual connotation of“Korean.”His art,portraying gut,Korean shamanistic communal rituals,could be conceived as a pictorial rendering of the idea of kibok,praying for good fortune,and served as a pujŏk,talisman paper,that possesses magical healing and protecting power.By striving to overcome the stylistic conflicts between Korean and Japanese,or traditional and Western,Park’s art accomplished the visual rhetoric of national aesthetic sensitivity that built on the communal thoughts and cultural experience of shamanism in the modern history of Korea.展开更多

Envisioned as a practice-based research, this paper explored Chinese traditional folk arts and crafts with a focus on traditional decorative patterns, vivid colors, and symbolic motifs that enliven Foshan style paper-...Envisioned as a practice-based research, this paper explored Chinese traditional folk arts and crafts with a focus on traditional decorative patterns, vivid colors, and symbolic motifs that enliven Foshan style paper-cuttings, New Year wood block prints, paper kites, festival lanterns, and Shiwan pottery figures from the areas of Foshan and Shiwan, near Guangzhou, China. The goal of this research was to create a series of original paintings by investigating Chinese traditional folk arts and handcrafts and integrating them physically or ichnographically on Ho's new body of paintings. Chinese traditional motifs including Chinese characters and Buddhist iconographies had already been important motifs in the contemporary Western paintings of Kong Ho for the past 10 years. This paper examined not only the artistic, cultural, and historical values but also the impacts of Chinese traditional folk arts and era~ on Ho's painting through a personal research travel and studies of a certain amount of Chinese paper-cuttings, folk prints, pottery, and handcrafts found in the famous Foshan Folk Art Studio and Foshan City Shiwan Ceramics Factory in Foshan, China. Furthermore, this paper investigated the symbolic meanings founded in Ho's spiritual paintings with strong Chinese heritage and how he reinterpreted those artifacts in a contemporary context.展开更多
In Turkey, from the second half of the nineteenth century, the shaping of an art of painting on the basis of Western understanding was realized with state support. From this period, certain art movements were seen as ...In Turkey, from the second half of the nineteenth century, the shaping of an art of painting on the basis of Western understanding was realized with state support. From this period, certain art movements were seen as the means of modernization and Westernization. Therefore, impressionism, cubism, realism, and classicism were supported by the state as a formal artistic understanding. This attitude continued until the 1940s and artists painted certain subject matters on the basis of these art movements. The main theme and subject matters were the presentations of an idealized society such as palace's life, attractive women in Western appearance, happy peasants, war heroes, and beautiful views from the country. In the early 1940s, significant breakup began to take place in point of the theme and the subject matter of art. Social realism began to take shape for the first time in art in Turkey. The artists of Yeniler Grubu (Newcomers Group) focused on social phenomena related disadvantaged social groups rather than an idealized society. Some artists among the 1950 generation, especially Nedim Gunsur, Nuri iyem, and Miimtaz Yener, focused on migration and social problems that occurred correspondingly in the 1960s and 1970s. This paper aims to investigate how these artists depicted and interpreted the migration and its consequences.展开更多
