Rescue effects of aqueous seed extracts of Foeniculum vulgare and Carum carvi against cadmium-induced hepatic, renal and gonadal damage in female albino rats

Objective: To investigate the protective effects of aqueous seed extracts of fennel"Foeniculum vulgare"(FVE) and caraway "Carum carvi"(CCE) on liver, kidney and reproductive organs in female rats against cadmium chloride(CC) intoxication.Methods: A total of 36 adult female rats were divided into six groups, six in each group.Control group(fed normal diet), CC-treated group(50 mg CC/kg diet), CCE-treated group(150 mg CCE/kg diet), CCE + CC group, FVE(150 mg/kg diet) and FVE + CC. One month later, all rats were sacrificed and all samples were collected at proestrus phase.Results: The toxic effects of CC were confirmed biochemically by significant increase of serum concentration of liver enzymes(P < 0.05), and creatinine(P < 0.001). Moreover,CC increased significantly the serum level of malondialdehyde(MDA) and decreased the total antioxidant capacity(TAC)(P < 0.001). In addition, serum concentrations of estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH)were significantly decreased(P < 0.01). Histopathologically, CC-treated group revealed marked pathological changes in renal, hepatic, ovarian and uterine tissues. All toxic findings observed in liver and kidney with CC treatment were found to be ameliorated markedly after co-treatments with FVE or CCE. Furthermore, co-treatment of FVE with CC improved significantly all studied reproductive parameters(P < 0.01).Conclusions: Both FVE and CCE could be used as efficient treatments for liver and kidney against CC intoxication. Moreover, FVE could be utilized as a potent treatment to protect and improve female fertility from cadmium intoxication. 展开更多

This survey was conducted to evaluate the impact of virgin olive oil nanoemulsion(ONE) combined with ajowan(Carum copticum) essential oil(AEO) on quality of lamb loin under refrigerated condition. The treatments were control, ONE, ONE + 1% AEO, and ONE + 2% AEO. The treatments caused a delay in growth of mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae, and lactic acid bacteria during chilled storage. The increasing rate of total volatile nitrogen content, lipid and protein oxidation, metmyoglobin formation, and color deterioration was more retarded in treatment groups. The treatments including ONE + 1% AEO and ONE + 2% AEO were more efficient than ONE alone to delay microbial flora growth, slow down oxidative processes, and improve color in the loins. According to the results of microbial, chemical, and sensory parameters, shelflife of lamb loins was 4 days in control, 8 days in ONE, and at least 16 days in ONE + 1% AEO and ONE + 2% AEO groups. In conclusion, combination of ONE and AEO is appropriate as natural preservative to extend the shelflife of lamb loins stored under chilled condition. 展开更多

Clarke (Apiaceae) is o... Plant secondary metabolites play an important role in plant-insect interactions and therefore such compounds may have insecticidal or antifeedant activity against insects. Carum copticum C. B. Clarke (Apiaceae) is one of these plants that have medicinal effects on humans. The chemical composition of the essential oil from dry seeds of C. copticum was studied by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thymol (41.34%),α-terpinolene (17.46%) and ρ-cymene (11.76%) were found to be the major constituents of the oil. In fumigant toxicity tests with the essential oil against adults of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) at 27 ±1℃ and 60% ± 5% RH, it was observed that S. oryzae (LC50 = 0.91 μL/L) were significantly susceptible than T. castaneum (LC50 = 33.14 μL/L). The mortalities of the insect species reached 100% at concentrations higher than 185.2 μL/L and 12-h exposure time. The findings indicate the strong insecticidal activity of C. copticum oil and its potential role as a fumigant for storedproduct insects. 展开更多

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the hydroalcoholic extracts of Malva sylvestris flowers or Carum carvi and Medicago sativa seeds, alone and in combination, which have been used in traditional Iranian medicine.Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 6 treatment groups: distilled water, sodium salicylate(SS),M. sylvestris extract(600 mg/kg), C. carvi extract(600 mg/kg), M. sativa extract(300 mg/kg) and combined extract(including 300 mg/kg M. sylvestris and C. carvi extracts, and 150 mg/kg M. sativa extract). The formalin pain model was used to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of the treatments. For anti-inflammatory effect, acute(one hour after injection) and chronic(during a week after injection)paw inflammation was measured after subcutaneous injection of 2.5% formalin in the hindpaw.Finally, tissue samples from all groups were prepared for histopathological studies.Results: The combined extract significantly inhibited the nociception in the acute phase of the formalin test(P < 0.001). In the chronic phase, all the extracts and SS had significant analgesic effect(P < 0.001).Analgesic activity of the combined extract was significantly stronger than SS(P < 0.01). In the acute inflammation model, M. sylvestris, C. carvi and the combined drug had significant inhibitory effects against paw edema(P < 0.05). All extracts, individually and in combination, significantly alleviated chronic paw inflammation(P < 0.01). The combined extract had much more anti-inflammatory activity than SS(P < 0.05). Histopathological results indicated improvement and reduction of inflammatory factors in the treatment groups.Conclusion: M. sylvestris, C. carvi and M. sativa have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.Potentially, each of these extracts or a mixture of them might be a valuable alternative drug to control pain and inflammation. 展开更多

采用石蜡切片法,分别对5种不同海拔高度藏茴香茎初生解剖结构进行比较研究,并用一维和二维(面积)的度量指标进行观测,以期探索随海拔升高,藏茴香茎结构的变化规律,从而探讨藏茴香对高寒气候的适应性,为藏茴香这一食用、药用植物资源开... 采用石蜡切片法,分别对5种不同海拔高度藏茴香茎初生解剖结构进行比较研究,并用一维和二维(面积)的度量指标进行观测,以期探索随海拔升高,藏茴香茎结构的变化规律,从而探讨藏茴香对高寒气候的适应性,为藏茴香这一食用、药用植物资源开发利用提供基础资料。结果表明:藏茴香茎的初生结构由表皮、皮层、维管柱构成,随着海拔升高,藏茴香茎的表皮厚度、髓厚度、髓射线宽度以及通气组织的面积逐渐增加,而维管组织与基本组织的比值不断缩小,皮层的细胞层数、厚度逐渐下降;维管束的数量、厚度不断降低,但维管束的发育程度和导管的直径有逐渐增加的趋势。藏茴香茎表皮的不断增厚,可以减少植物体内热量的散失,并有效地降低强紫外线对植物造成的伤害。基本组织比例的增加,有利于贮藏更多的生理调节性物质,增加植物的抗寒能力;通气组织逐渐发达,可极大地降低空气在植物体内的扩散阻力,形成氧气由地上部运输到地下部的通道,还可增加植物体的浮力,减轻了植物体比重,对植物体起到了良好的支撑作用。藏茴香茎解剖结构随海拔的变化,体现了植物对环境的适应性。研究中发现的随着海拔升高,茎皮层的细胞层数和厚度以及茎中维管束的数量和厚度均下降,但维管束的发育程度和导管直径增加的现象,还有待于进一步研究。 展开更多

Carum carvi or caraway is traditionally used for treatment of indigestion,pneumonia,and as appetizer,galactagogue,and carminative.Essential oil,fixed oil and many other valuable extractive compounds with industrial applications are prepared from caraway.This review article has new deep research on caraway as medicinal plant.For preparing the manuscript,the information was extracted from accessible international databases(Google scholar,PubMed,Science direct,Springer,and Wiley),electronic resources and traditional books by key word of caraway or Carum carvi.The results of traditional studies exhibited that the galactagogue and carminative effects of caraway fruits are superior to other effects.Although,the traditional scholars used it as appetizer,while caraway was the main ingredient of anti-obesity drugs in traditional medicine,which has been confirmed in two modern clinical trials of human studies.Caraway oil in combination with peppermint oil or menthol is used for treatment of functional dyspepsia in clinical studies.Caraway oil topically on abdomen relieves the IBS symptoms in patient.Although,the use of caraway oil is not recommended in adults under 18 years due to insufficient data,but it can topically use as anti-colic and carminative agent in children or infants.The antiaflatoxigenic,antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of caraway oil along with its reputation as spice help the industries to use it as natural preservatives and antioxidant agents. 展开更多

目的:优化葛缕子精油的提取工艺并对其成分进行分析。方法:以葛缕子籽粒为原料,采用超临界CO_(2)技术提取葛缕子精油,并通过气相色谱—质谱(GC-MS)对精油挥发性成分进行分析。结果:超临界CO_(2)提取葛缕子精油的最佳工艺条件为提取釜温... 目的:优化葛缕子精油的提取工艺并对其成分进行分析。方法:以葛缕子籽粒为原料,采用超临界CO_(2)技术提取葛缕子精油,并通过气相色谱—质谱(GC-MS)对精油挥发性成分进行分析。结果:超临界CO_(2)提取葛缕子精油的最佳工艺条件为提取釜温度50℃,分离釜温度40℃,提取釜压力30 MPa,分离釜压力0.4 MPa,二氧化碳流速20 g/min,提取时间90 min,此条件下精油得率为4.79%。与同时蒸馏萃取(SDE)法相比,超临界CO_(2)流体能快速扩散到样品颗粒内部并充分溶解其中的精油成分,具有提取时间短、得率高、无溶剂残留的优点。超临界CO_(2)法制备的葛缕子精油中,主要成分为D-柠檬烯(50.96%)和香芹酮(46.65%),挥发性成分种类及含量均高于同时蒸馏萃取法的。结论:超临界CO_(2)法比同时蒸馏萃取法更适合葛缕子精油的提取。 展开更多

Objective:To explore the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of caraway on atopic dermatitis(AD)in mice.Methods:AD was induced in two stages,including sensitization and challenge with the application of 2,4 dinitrochlorobenzene 2% and 0.2%,respectively.Clinical symptoms and histological analysis of the skin were assessed.The effects of caraway on oxidant/antioxidant parameters as well as Th1-and Th2-related cytokines were also evaluated.Results:Caraway reduced the severity of dermatitis in AD-induced mice,as evidenced by significant inhibition of Th2-related cytokines(IL-4 and IL-13)and increased Th1-related cytokine(IFN-γ).Additionally,treatment with caraway significantly increased superoxide dismutase and catalase activity and decreased the malondialdehyde level in the serum of AD mice.Furthermore,caraway inhibited the differentiation of Th2 cells while favoring Th1 cell differentiation in the spleen via regulating their master transcription factors GATA3 and T-bet.Conclusions:Caraway could improve AD autoimmune responses and could be considered a potential candidate to treat AD disease. 展开更多

目的:研究藏茴香水提物对大鼠血脂调节及肝脏的保护作用。方法将10 w 龄雄性 SD 大鼠48只,除空白对照组8只大鼠以外其余各组大鼠均采用高脂饲料喂养8 w 后,断尾采血测血脂,确定造模成功后随机分为模型对照组、血脂康对照组、空白对... 目的:研究藏茴香水提物对大鼠血脂调节及肝脏的保护作用。方法将10 w 龄雄性 SD 大鼠48只,除空白对照组8只大鼠以外其余各组大鼠均采用高脂饲料喂养8 w 后,断尾采血测血脂,确定造模成功后随机分为模型对照组、血脂康对照组、空白对照组及藏茴香水提物高、中、低剂量组(300、150、75 mg·kg^-1·d^-1),连续灌胃给药6 w,1次/d,模型对照组与空白对照组灌胃给予等量的生理盐水。每2周测1次体质量;末次给药后腹主动脉采血,测血清中的高密度脂蛋白胆固醇(HDL-C)、低密度脂蛋白胆固醇(LDL-C)、总胆固醇(TC)、甘油三酯(TG)等血脂水平,测定谷草转氨酶(AST)、谷丙转氨酶(ALT)等脂类酶的活性及谷胱甘肽过氧化酶(GSH-Px)、超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、脂肪过氧化物丙二醛(MDA)等抗氧化能力的变化。结果与空白对照组比较,模型对照组 TG、TC、LDL-C 均有显著升高,HDL-C 显著降低,差异均有统计学意义(P <0.05)。藏茴香各剂量组 TC、TG、LDL-C 逐渐降低,HDL-C 逐渐升高(说明藏茴香干预能有效调节血脂水平)。与模型对照组比较,藏茴香各剂量组大鼠血清血脂水平差异均有统计学意义。与空白对照组比较,模型对照组血清 AST、ALT 明显升高,有统计学差异(P <0.05),血脂康对照组及藏茴香水提物各剂量组血清 AST、ALT 均显著降低;与模型对照组比较,藏茴香水提物高、中剂量组有统计学差异(P <0.05~0.01),与小剂量组比较无统计学差异(P >0.05)。与空白对照组比较,模型对照组 SOD、MDA 水平升高,差异有统计学意义(P <0.05);与模型对照组比较,藏茴香水提物高剂量组SOD、MDA 水平和血脂康对照组 SOD 水平差异有统计学意义(P <0.05),与藏茴香水取物中、低剂量组比较无统计学差异(P >0.05)。模型对照组与空白对照组比较 GSH-Px 有统计学差异(P <0.001);随着实验的进行,藏茴香水提物各剂量组 GSH-Px 均明显升高,模型对照组与血脂康对照组及藏茴香水取物高剂量组比较有统计学差异(P <0.05),与中剂量及低剂量组比较无统计学差异(P >0.05)。结论高、中剂量藏茴香水提物可明显调节机体脂质代谢,对预防和治疗高脂血症有一定的应用价值。 展开更多

目的分析胎儿第五、六脑室扩张的超声表现及其临床结果 ,探讨第五、六脑室扩张在产前遗传咨询及新生儿预后的临床意义。方法对孕中晚期胎儿常规探测第五、第六脑室,对存在脑室扩张胎儿进行系统的产前超声检查,建议行胎儿染色体及病毒学... 目的分析胎儿第五、六脑室扩张的超声表现及其临床结果 ,探讨第五、六脑室扩张在产前遗传咨询及新生儿预后的临床意义。方法对孕中晚期胎儿常规探测第五、第六脑室,对存在脑室扩张胎儿进行系统的产前超声检查,建议行胎儿染色体及病毒学检查,产后行新生儿头颅超声检查,定期随访。结果本次研究的胎儿第五、第六脑室扩张孕妇共95例,发生率为0.86%,其中单纯第五脑室扩张52例,单纯第六脑室扩张17例,合并第五、第六脑室扩张26例。脑室扩张部位以及扩张程度与围生期结局无明显关系(P<0.05),但产后脑室扩张恢复正常的正常围生儿例数显著高于脑室扩张程度增加的正常围生儿例数(P>0.05)。结论胎儿期第五、第六脑室扩张这一超声征象在产前超声检查中应引起足够的重视。 展开更多
