The utilization of an appropriate collector or surfactant is crucial for the beneficiation of low-rank coal. However,in previous studies, the selection of surfactants was primarily based on flotation procedures, which hinders the understanding of the interaction mechanism between surfactant groups and oxygen-containing functional groups at the surface of low-rank coal.In this study,we investigate the flotation of low-rank coal in the presence of a composite collector by using a combined theoretical and experimental approach. The maximum flotation mass recovery achieved was 82.89%using a 3:1 mixture of dodecane and castor oil acid.Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses showed that castor oil acid was effectively adsorbed onto the surface of low-rank coal, enhancing the hydrophobicity of the coal.In addition, the diffusion coefficient of water molecules in the water-composite collector-coal system was greater than that in the dodecane system. Moreover, due to the presence of castor oil acid in the flotation process, the adsorption distance of dodecane and low-rank coal became shorter.Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the diffusion and interaction of surfactant molecules at the interface of low-rank coal particles and water was enhanced because the adsorption of the dodecane-castor oil acid mixture is primarily controlled by hydrogen bonds and electrostatic attraction.Based on these results,a better surfactant for flotation of low-rank coal is also proposed. 展开更多

Extraction of castor oil from castor seeds was investigated using different green solvents which include d-limonene, p-cymene, α-pinene, ethanol, and furfural at the temperature range of (323 - 413) K. The Soxhlet extraction method was employed to investigate the effect of temperature at atmospheric pressure. The focus of the study was to investigate a potential green solvent that can produce the high yields compared to the traditional solvent (hexane). The results show that at the average time of 3 hours and 30 minutes, the castor oil yield for green solvents were ranked as furfural (47.13%) > ethanol (45.37%) > p-cymene (39.15%) > d-limonene (39.13%) > α-pinene (38.11%). These castor oil yields were obtained at optimum temperatures for each green solvent. The castor oil yields were compared to the yield of hexane (31.36%) at same average time. The green solvents were recovered by using simple distillation, except furfural which was difficult to be recovered. 展开更多

Water solubility enhancements of naphthalene(Naph), phenantherene(Phen) and pyrene(Py) in sodium castor oil sulfonate(SCOS) microemulsions were evaluated. The apparent solubilities of PAHs are linearly proportional to the concentrations of SCOS microemulsion, and the enhancement extent by SCOS solutions is greater than that by ordinary surfactants on the basis of weight solubilization ratio(WSR). The log K em values of Naph, Phen, and Py are 3 13, 4 44 and 5 01 respectively, which are about the same as the log K ow values. At 5000 mg/L of SCOS conccentration, the apparent solubilities are 8 80, 121, and 674 times as the intrinsic solubilities for Naph, Phen, and Py. The effects of inorganic ions and temperature on the solubilization of solutes are also investigated. The solubilization is improved with a moderate addition of Ca 2+ , Na +, NH + 4 and the mixture of Na +, K +, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ and NH + 4. WSR values are enhanced by 22 0% for Naph, 23 4% for Phen, and 24 6% for Py with temperature increasing by 5℃. The results indicated that SCOS microemulsions improve the performance of the surfactant enhanced remediation(SER) of soil, by increasing solubilities of organic pollutants and reducing the level of surfactant pollution and remediation expenses. 展开更多

An acidic cation exchange resin has been used to prepare epoxidised castor oil(ECO)which was used as a co-plasticizer with epoxidised soyabean oil(ESBO)for processing polyvinyl chloride(PVC).The structure of ECO was confirmed and its physico chemical properties were evaluated.PVC/(ESBO&ECO)blends were prepared by melt mixing and compression molded into sheets. The specimens were evaluated for tensile properties, impact strength and hardness. While the tensile strength did not vary much, the elongation reduced with the replacement of ESBO with ECO.Dynamic mechanical studies revealed that the glass transition temperature increased with incorporation of ECO,however, the storage modulus was not altered much.Replacing 20%of ESBO with ECO resulted in blends with desired thermal and mechanical properties without affecting the processability of PVC. 展开更多

Colon capsule endoscopy was approved for reimbursement under the national health insurance system of Japan in 2014. At our hospital, specialized mainly in renal, hepatic, and diabetic diseases, we have been performing colon capsule endoscopy since December 2014. Dialysis patients are potentially susceptible to bleeding because of the fragile intestine, impaired platelet function, or oral administration of nonsteroidalanti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or anticoagulants. For this reason, detailed examination by capsule endoscopy appears to be useful. However, the capsule excretion rate after recommended bowel preparation reportedly ranges from 70% to 90%, and administration of boosters is also necessary. For dialysis patients, liquid loading is a problem. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of bowel preparation with castor oil for improving the capsule excretion rate. In all 20 patients (including four dialysis patients), both capsule transit time and duration of capsule endoscopy were shortened. The results are presented and briefly discussed in this report. 展开更多

Castor oil polyurethane/poly(methyl methacrylate) AB crosslinked polymers (ABCP) were synthesized by free radical copolymerization of MMA and vinyl-terminated castor oil polyurethane which was obtained from isocyanate-terminated castor oil polyurethane and hydroxyethyl methacrylate The mechanical properties, transition and relaxation, as well as compatibility and morphology of the ABCP were investigated by changing the component. The results show that the ABCP is a semicompatible system and the compatibility of the two components decreases with increasing content of the hard segment. The mechanical and damping properties of the ABCP are obviously superior to that of their homopolymers. The damping value is mainly controlled by cross[ink density of the ABCP but the T-g value by component. 展开更多

This study was aimed at evaluating the physicochemical properties and oxidation stability of castor oil using microwave-assisted solvent extraction(MAE). MAE was performed using 5% ethanol in hexane as solvent at different extraction times, power intensities and solvent-to-feed(S/F, ml of solvent to gram of feed) ratios. The process parameters were optimized by statistical approach using historical data design of response surface method(RSM). The oils were characterized for yield, physicochemical properties, dielectric properties and oxidation stability, and comparison was also made with oil extracted using Soxhlet method. Results show that the maximum oil yield of 37% was obtained at 20 min with microwave power intensity of 330 W and S/F ratio of 20. The main fatty acid composition of castor oil is ricinoleic acid. The density, refractive index, dielectric properties and oxidation stability of oils are not affected by the extraction methods and extraction parameters of MAE. However, the MAE-extracted oil is more viscous compared to that by Soxhlet method. With extra caution on oil oxidation, MAE could be a promising solvent extraction method with an 86% less in processing time and a higher yield. 展开更多

In this study, a homogeneous alkaline catalyst was used in the production of biodiesel from raw and refined castor oil feedstock. The effect of potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a catalyst between the two feedstocks, raw and refined castor oil was compared. The transesterification technique was utilized in this study, aiming to investigate the effect of different parameters, which include the reaction temperature, methanol-to-oil mole ratio, and catalyst concentration at a constant period of 90 minutes. The result revealed the performance of the KOH catalyst on raw castor oil yielded 98.49% FAME, which was higher than the refined castor oil which yielded 97.9% FAME. The optimal conditions obtained from refined castor oil were applied to raw castor oil because of the same properties. The fuel quality of castor oil and produced biodiesel were tested for physicochemical properties. 展开更多

To meet the surging needs in energy efficiency and eco-friendly lubricants,a novel superlubricious technology using a vegetable oil and ceramic materials is proposed.By coupling different hydrogen-free amorphous carbon coatings with varying fraction of sp^(2) and sp^(3) hybridized carbon in presence of a commercially available silicon nitride bulk ceramic, castor oil provides superlubricity although the liquid vegetable oil film in the contact is only a few nanometres thick at most.Besides a partial liquid film possibly separating surfaces in contact, local tribochemical reactions between asperities are essential to maintain superlubricity at low speeds.High local pressure activates chemical degradation of castor oil generating graphitic/graphenic-like species on top of asperities, thus helping both the chemical polishing of surface and its chemical passivation by H and OH species.Particularly, the formation of the formation of–(CH_(2)–CH_(2))n–noligomers have been evidenced to have a major role in the friction reduction.Computer simulation unveils that formation of chemical degradation products of castor oil on friction surfaces are favoured by the quantity of sp^(2)-hybridized carbon atoms in the amorphous carbon structure.Hence, tuning sp^(2)-carbon content in hydrogen-free amorphous carbon,in particular,on the top layers of the coating, provides an alternative way to control superlubricity achieved with castor oil and other selected green lubricants. 展开更多
