Our...This paper presents an empirical study of how U.S. antidumping （AD） actions against China affect China ＇s inward and outward foreign direct investment （FDI） based on the international division of labor model. Our findings are as follows： （1） The U.S.-China trade deficit has been widened by both downstream firms in China established through vertical FDI and also inward enterprises established through horizontal FDI. The widening deficit in turn exacerbates vitriolic complaints in the U.S. about injury to its industries. This will lead to further U.S. AD actions discouraging FDI in China. （2） U.S. AD cases against China have negatively impacted China＇s metal manufacturing, chemical and, especially, textile industries in terms of exports and inward FDI. From 2004 to 2009, the share of total inward FDI going to China＇s manufacturing sector has dropped drastically by almost 20 percent. This supports predictions made using the international division of labor model. （3） With U.S. AD actions against Chinese products on the rise, Chinese firms chose not to circumvent such barriers through outward FDI in the U.S. but rather through outward FDI in tax havens. Wahaha holds 49% equity interests in these companies, while Danone later became the dominant shareholder with a 51% stake after acquiring shares held by BNP in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis. Danone then proposed to transfer the Wahaha brand to a joint venture but did not succeed. Subsequently, a trademark usage contract was signed by both parties instead. In the ensuing years, the Wahaha Group established non-JV companies in west China, central China and the Three Gorges reservoir area. These companies had RMB 5.6 billion of total assets as of December 31st, 2006 and made a net income of RMB 1.04 billion in that year. On April 3rd, 2007, Danone intended to force a deal by which it could acquire 51% equity interests in those non-JV companies for a sum of RMB 4 billion. Wahaha Chairman Zong Qinghou later complained that he and Wahaha fell into a trap set up by Danone. The analysis uses annual data for the period from...This paper has empirical character and investigates locational determinants of the inward foreign direct investment （FDI） stock among 50 states of the United States. The analysis uses annual data for the period from 1997 to 2007. The study identifies several state-specific determinants of FDI and investigates the changes in their importance during the study period. Our results show that among the major determinants, the real per capita income, real per capita expenditure on education, FDI related employment, plus real research and development expenditure are found to have a significant positive impact on inward FDI. There is also evidence that manufacturing density and unionization exert a small positive impact on inward FDI. In addition, per capita state taxes, the share of scientists and engineers in the workforce, real capital expenditure, and unemployment rate exert a negative impact on FDI.展开更多

As the major source of air pollution,sulfur dioxide(S0_(2))emissions have become the focus of global attention.However,existing studies rarely consider spatial effects when discussing the relationship between foreign ...As the major source of air pollution,sulfur dioxide(S0_(2))emissions have become the focus of global attention.However,existing studies rarely consider spatial effects when discussing the relationship between foreign direct investment(FDI)and S0_(2) emissions.This study took the Yangtze River Delta as the research area and used the spatial panel data of 26 cities in this region for 2004-2017.The study investigated the spatial agglomeration effects and dynamics at work in FDI and S0_(2) emissions by using global and local measures of spatial autocorrelation.Then,based on regression analysis using a results of traditional ordinary least squares(OLS)model and a spatial econometric model,the spatial Durbin model(SDM)with spatial-time effects was adopted to quantify the impact of FDI on S0_(2) emissions,so as to avoid the regression results bias caused by ignoring the spatial effects.The results revealed a significant spatial autocorrelation between FDI and S0_(2) emissions,both of which displayed obvious path dependence characteristics in their geographical distribution.A series of agglomeration regions were observed on the spatial scale.The estimation results of the SDM showed that FDI inflow promoted S0_(2) emissions,which supports the pollution haven hypothesis.The findings of this study are significant in the prevention and control of air pollution in the Yangtze River Delta.展开更多
The commencement of China–Pakistan Economic Corridor has led to the appreciation of Pakistan’s economic outlook from 5.4%to 5.8%by the World Bank.The upgraded outlook is a welcome sign but it is still trivial,essent...The commencement of China–Pakistan Economic Corridor has led to the appreciation of Pakistan’s economic outlook from 5.4%to 5.8%by the World Bank.The upgraded outlook is a welcome sign but it is still trivial,essentially attributable to the electric power crisis,which approximately trims 2%of Pakistan’s economic growth annually.Almost 60%of the CPEC(China–Pakistan Economic Corridor)funds are directed at Pakistan’s energy sector,hence,demanding careful attention of both researchers and policy analysts alike.The study is based upon a meta-analytic review of literature concerning CPEC and Pakistan’s energy sector.The results of the study demonstrate that CPEC is an easing agent for Pakistan’s energy crisis(82.30%).The results also highlight points of concern,including inadequate planning(47%),dilapidated electricity distribution system causing losses(64.7%),and an unsustainable energy mix(64.7%).The study further validates the findings via Spearman’s Rho-Correlation.The rρvalue for the possible“resolution of Pakistan’s energy crisis”is 0.5426 achieving a significance level of 98%and a corresponding p-value of 0.0252.The significant negative rρvalue attained is−0.4894 which establishes the fact that lack of planning can hinder the energy crisis resolution.展开更多
