Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, both the Communist Party and the government have placed great emphasis on the advancement of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture and moxibustion have been actively involved in combating major epidemics such as malaria, schistosomiasis, and COVID-19. This article conducts a historical review of these three significant cases to elucidate how the acupuncture community has effectively utilized its unique advantages and characteristics through theoretical discussions, clinical practices, experimental research, as well as receiving administrative leadership and political support from the Communist Party of China and government. We provide an objective evaluation of their effectiveness while summarizing historical experiences to serve as a reference for future utilization of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy in epidemic relief efforts. Additionally, propose four suggestions: strengthening Party leadership and enhancing political support;timely summarization of experiences to establish programs and systems;deepening scientific research by integrating experimental findings with clinical practice;focusing on public awareness campaigns and education to solidify grassroots foundations. 展开更多

Africa can be"left behind"after other advanced continents recover from the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic as reflected by the global pandemic of HIV/MDS.In this paper,we summarize potentially adaptable, effective and innovative strategies from China,Italy, and the U.S.The purpose is to help African countries with weaker healthcare systems better respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.China, being the first to report COVID-19 infection swiftly swung into anti-epidemic actions by the use of innovative risk communication and epidemic containment strategies.Italy and U.S.,the next rapidly hit countries after China, however, experienced sustained infections and deaths due to delayed and ineffective response. Many African countries responded poorly to the COVID-19 pandemic as evidenced by the limited capacity for public health surveillance, poor leadership, low education and socioeconomic status, among others.Experience from China,Italy and U.S.suggests that a better response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Mrica needs a strong public health leadership, proactive strategies, innovative risk communication about the pandemic, massive tests and isolation, and scaling-up community engagement.Lastly,African countries must collaborate with other countries to facilitate real-time information and experience exchange with other countries to avoid being left behind. 展开更多

In this paper,we study how China’s stock market reacts to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020,particularly to the announcement of the pandemic lockdown. In general,we observe reversals both at the industry level and at the firm level due to investors’overreactions to the pandemic lockdown. For industryand firm-level stocks with positive cumulative abnormal returns(CARs)in the event window when Wuhan was locked down, the reversals are stronger. Thus, the reversal effects are mostly driven by industries and stocks that positively overreact to COVID-19 than do others.Further investigation shows that overreactions are stronger for stocks with lower institutional ownership, which means that retail investors react more strongly to COVID-19.Among stocks with positive CARs in the event window, those with higher idiosyncratic volatilities and lower book-to-market ratios tend to have worse performance after one month. 展开更多

The global COVID-19 pandemic caused various economic contraction in most countries, including all of China’s major trading partners.Using a difference-in-differences model, this study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on China’s monthly exports from January 2019 to May 2020.We find strong and robust evidence that China’s exports to countries at high risk from the pandemic experienced a larger decline than exports to low-risk countries after the onset of the pandemic, with the prices of exports increasing significantly.Furthermore, the results of a triple differences model show heterogeneous effects across different industries and goods.Chinese industries located upstream in the global value chain are more vulnerable than those located downstream.Industries with high labor and contract intensity(proxies for processing trade)experienced greater declines than other industries.Exports of goods with high import elasticity of substitution experienced higher prices and moderate volume losses due to the pandemic. 展开更多

The year 2020 is bound to be a very special year in the history ofChina’s and the world’s economy. The sudden onslaught ofCOVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on China’s macroeconomy andits market participants. Also, the global economic and trade system has tipped into the most severe downturn since World WarII. The macro stimulus policy packages launched by various countries are of an epic scale, in a way rarely seen before. China wasthe first to be hit by the epidemic, to contain the epidemic, andto resume work and production. China’s economic recovery andreconstruction are of landmark and leading significance for theglobal economy. The content of this report mainly includes thefollowing two aspects: one is to forecast the basic trend andrecovery potential of China’s economy under the impact of theepidemic;the other is to provide applicable policy recommendations for post-epidemic economic rehabilitation and its mid- tolong-term development. We focus on four issues: the progressand nature of China’s economic recovery at the current stage;major challenges and risks facing China’s economic recovery inthe next stage;how to design policies of a sizable scale and policy mechanisms to achieve desired effects;and whether the existing policy is sufficient to cope with various risks and challenges,to enhance resilience and re-consolidate economic foundations. Inview of this, the report presents the forecast and prospect ofChina’s core macroeconomic indicators in 2020 and puts forwardpolicy recommendations accordingly. 展开更多

Human rights have always been the focus of disputes between China and the West. To make a better China story about human rights and enhance China’s international discourse power in the field of human rights, we propose the text construction, translation and communication path of the construction of the human rights discourse system with Chinese characteristics from the cross-disciplinary perspective. Based on the examples of prevention and control of the CoVID-19 pandemic under the concept of putting people first, mainstream diplomatic linguistic data relevant to the fight against the novel coronavirus was collected through the internet. The human rights discourse with Chinese characteristics is constructed through a variety of texts focusing on putting the people first, the right to life, the right to health, the right to information, the right to privacy, the right to work and a sense of a community with a shared future for human beings. The core concepts of human rights have experienced the deepening process of decontextualization, abstraction and theorization to gradually conform to the expression habits of international audiences. The international communication effect is mainly positive in civil society. It shows that the construction of China’s human rights discourse system and the governance of international human rights discourse have achieved preliminary results. To enhance China’s discourse power on human rights, we need to add an interdisciplinary approach. 展开更多

Recent years have seen more countries to experience"three lows and three highs"problems. The pandemic triggered the exposure of these accumulated risks, leading to a slump in world economic growth.Given the developing trend of world economy amid the ongoing pandemic, the world may face a range of challenges for a long time to go,e.g.insufficient momentum for economic growth, increased resistance for market opening and rising debt risks. As the world economy suffers a major hit,China has been active in providing the international community with the assistance needed to combat the COVID-19 and recover the economy, while China’s economy itself has shown strong resilience and stability. In the long run,the pandemic will not change the sound momentum of China’s economic development;rather,it will provide an opportunity for China to play a significant role in the world economy. 展开更多
