Chinese social and economic history is both influenced by and,to a certain extent,married with Chinese political regimes.Various political dynasties from the past have each exercised significant control of Chinese social and economic environments,and continue to exert influence even to the present day.Three of these influential periods include the Kang Qian Flourishing Age(1723-1796),the Qing Dynasty Decline(1800s-1912),and the People’s Republic of China Communist Control(1949-present).A review and in-depth examination of each regime helps to both understand where China is today and also how it is likely to evolve in the future.

Changes of China’s Status in the Global System and Its Influencing Factors:A Multiple Contact Networks Perspective

Clarifying China’s position in the global system is an important logical basis for developing national diplomacy.Although much research has been done on China’s development status,most studies have been based on country comparisons or institutional en-vironment.In today’s networked era in which the global economy,trade,personnel,and information are closely connected,studies on China’s global position and its status changes and influencing factors in multiple contact networks are still insufficient.In this study,from the perspective of diverse global contact networks,we constructed economic,cultural,and political influence indices to explore the changes and influencing factors on China’s status in the global system from 2005 to 2018.The results show that during the study period,China’s global influence in the fields of economic ties,cultural exchanges,and political contacts increased significantly,but its influ-ence in the fields of cultural exchanges and political contacts lagged far economic ties.The pattern of China’s economic influence on various economies around the world has shown a transformation from an‘upright pyramid’to an‘inverted pyramid’structure.The proportion of these economies in low-influence zones has decreased from more than 60%in 2005 to less than 20%in 2018.China’s cultural and political influence on various economies around the world has increased significantly;however,for the former,the percentage of high-influence areas is still less than 20%,whereas for the latter the percentage of these economies in medium-and high-influence areas is still less than 50%.Analyses such as a scatter plot matrix show that geographical proximity,economic globalization,close cooperation with developing countries,and a proactive and peaceful foreign policy are important factors in improving China’s status in the diverse global network system.

A Study of Iconicity in English Translation of Chinese Political Discourse:A Case Study of China’s Epic Journey from Poverty to Prosperity

Political discourse is an important component of Chinese discourse,and its translation criticism research is of great significance for telling the story of China well and establishing an international image.Iconicity is an important means to form the rhetorical effect,so the translation of political discourse must try to reproduce the iconicity of the original text.By analyzing the syntactic iconicity of the English version of the White paper China’s Epic Journey from Poverty to Prosperity,it is found that for the translation of quantitative iconicity,it is necessary to adjust the translation by synonym substitution or sentence pattern conversion on the basis of ensuring the representation of quantitative rhetoric.For the translation of sequential iconicity,it should strive for representing the logical sequence of the original text while enhancing the readability and rhetorical power of the translation.For the translation of distance iconicity,it is necessary to reproduce the delicacy of the original,meanwhile,to consider the emotional and rhetorical implication.The research emphasizes the balance between“syntactic iconicity of original text representation”and“appeal and readability of translated text”.The study is helpful to telling the“China’s poverty reduction story well”and translation practice of political discourse.

Chronicling China’s Political Journey

Leading Chinese political scientist Zhao Baoxu has produced an overview of the evolution of China’s political structure, its political studies as well as its foreign policy over the past six decades in his latest book In Pursuit of Harmony: An Academic Anthology of Zhao Baoxu. The English edition of this anthology was published by the Beijing-based Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press in November 2008. Technical advancements and significance of circumlunar return and reentry spacecraft

As one of the vital steps in the 3rd phase of China＇s lunar exploration program （CLEP）, the circumlunar return and reentry spacecraft, developed by China Academy of Space Technology （CAST）, is used to demonstrate the key technologies of by- per-speed return and reentry spacecraft. The system configuration and flight process are presented in this paper, as well as the analysis of mission characteristics, the key technologies and the technical advancement during the R＆D progress. The significance of circumlunar return and reentry spacecraft is given at the end.
