This study explores the lived experiences of Chinese teachers in American Chinese Schools.Max van Manen’s methodology for hermeneutic phenomenological research provides a framework for the study, and the philosophical writings of Heidegger,Gadamer, and Derrida guide the textual interpretations.Pedagogical voices of Aoki,Pinar, and Greene, and cultural journeys of Hongyu Wang and Xin Li reveal possibilities for understanding the experiences of Chinese teachers,as the question is addressed:“What is the meaning of teaching Chinese in American Chinese Schools?”Ten Chinese teachers engaged in a series of open-ended conversations. The conversations illuminate the experience of Confucian teaching meeting American pedagogies around two main themes.First,in following the metaphor of Chinese knotwork, the teachers speak of their struggles and challenges between Chinese Confucian and American pedagogies, reflect on splitting and splicing the knots through changing and adjusting their method of Confucian teaching.Second, they tell of the experiences of building bridges in a third space through dialogically connecting the different cultures and pedagogies in order to seek the appropriate way of teaching and learning Chinese well in American Chinese Schools. 展开更多

The development of technology has driven human beings into a globalized world, which requires intercultural communication competence(ICC).As its affective aspect, the subject of intercultural sensitivity(IS)is being heatedly discussed nowadays. This study focuses on the importance of intercultural sensitivity(IS)among Chinese EFL teachers and attempts to explore their current level and the possible reasons for it.For this purpose, questionnaires were distributed to 29 Chinese elementary school English teachers, and the results from the questionnaire showed that the IS level of these teachers is satisfactory, scoring high in five dimensions:interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction confidence, interaction attentiveness, and interaction enjoyment. The follow-up interview suggested that the high IS level may be a result from intercultural communication training. Moreover, this research found that Chinese teachers were more engaged and enjoyed less in view of scarce opportunities for communication in authentic cross-cultural contexts.Several suggestions and implications for further research have also been included in this article. 展开更多

Professional learning communities(PLCs)have seen a rapid spread all around the world over the past 30 years.Since then it has been proved that they can improve teaching quality and thereby the achievement of students, and so PLCs have attracted increasing attention especially from education systems. In China,PLCs have been developed vigorously within schools since the implementation of the‘New Curriculum Reform’in 2000.However,the west has paid scant attention to and were not familiar with them since most research in this field in China was published in Chinese.Furthermore,PLCs are influenced by contextual and cultural factors, and therefore PLCs in Chinese education systems are different from those in Anglo-American settings due to long-standing cultural differences, which require consideration. Therefore, this research will investigate the PLCs in China that may be of interest. Many recent studies have shown that, although PLCs have made significant progress in Chinese urban middle schools through the enthusiastic efforts of educators and scholars, there are still several barriers. The primary purpose of this research is to review the development of PLCs and additionally to analyse the challenges faced by the principals. 展开更多

Objective To determine the extent of the obesity epidemic in school‐aged Chinese children in 2010 and track the increasing trend in different socioeconomic regions over the preceding 25 years. Strategies for preventing childhood obesity are suggested. Methods We used a dataset provided by the Chinese National Survey on Students’ Constitution and Health from 1985‐2010. Subjects were 7‐18‐year‐old students randomly selected from urban and rural areas in 30 provinces. Eight subgroups were created according to region and socioeconomic status. Results Increased rates of the epidemic (overweight and obesity combined) were greatest in large coastal cities‐32.6% and 19.1% among males and females, respectively. These rates has neared that of developed countries. Similar increases were found in all other regions, including the once poverty‐stricken rural west. The epidemic in most of the rural areas began after 2000, but has spread swiftly over the last decade. In 2010, it was estimated that 9.9% of Chinese school‐aged children and adolescents were overweight and that an additional 5.1% were obese, representing an estimated 30.43 million individuals. Conclusion The prognosis for China's childhood‐obesity epidemic is dire. To prevent childhood obesity, we suggest several strategies, including reasonable dietary intake, increase physical activity, a change in sedentary lifestyles and corresponding behavioral modifications. 展开更多

The concept of life aesthetics reflects an individual’s cry for life and pursuit of beauty, inspiring individuals to discover their spiritual home, sense their poetic habitat, and enjoy the beauty of life flowing from their fingertips.Chinese education, viewed through the lens of life aesthetics,is founded on the natural characteristics of life, stimulating the aesthetic sense of individual life through the allure of language, and teaching students to view life through the aesthetic lens as well as from an understanding of life’s essence.Teachers and students are required to take an aesthetic view of life as theoretical guidance, based on core Chinese literacy, with textbook contents serving as carriers and classroom instruction as the position, closely connected to students’actual lives,in order to help stimulate aesthetic experience among students, improve their aesthetic ability through aesthetic activities, and thus establish a correct view of life. 展开更多

In 2019,Ne Zha:I’m the Destiny won more than 5-billion-yuan box office in Chinese movie market.Although the box office is not the only criterion for judging the quality of an animated movie,Ne Zha breaks a certain stereotype in storytelling, technical means, and the setting of the positive and negative characters. This potentially indicates that in producing an animated film,Chinese artists start to pay more attention to how to refine a movie production,or how to make the story more interesting. One of the attractive elements of this movie is that,Ne Zha has made a breakthrough in creation of a character of Children’s hero, and is totally different from its previous versions:with his joy and sorrow, audiences see the characteristics of Ne Zha as a nice as well as an aggressive boy. This partially because in setting the role of Ne Zha,boundaries between the good and the evil or between beauty and ugly are not so clear in the animation, while it features that Chinese cartoons are set to focus more on authenticity rather than their instructive functions.Additionally, the change of the image of Ne Zha and the subversive characters re-created in the movie have metaphorical significances, featuring how“Chinese school”reconstructs the subjectivity of Chinese stories in contemporary world. 展开更多

The present study is set in the context of ongoing educational reform that advocates fostering self-regulated learners and using assessment to improve learning.Drawing on existent research on classroom assessment(CA)and self-regulated learning(SRL),the authors have formulated a conceptual framework outlining the CA features that promote SRL among students.Guided by this framework, the 12 high school teachers’CA practice was scrutinized to find out to what extent their CA was pro-SRL.Based on interview data and classroom observation, gaps were found in Chinese high school teachers’CA.First,CA tasks are primarily low-level closed-end problems, with rare exceptions.Second, students are not allowed much autonomy in CA.Third,self-assessment practice is mostly self-grading.Fourth,peer-assessment is uncommon and mainly involves simply marking peers’work.Fifth, teacher feedback is focused on task and process levels;regulation-level feedback is less common.Sixth, despite teachers’encouragement, most students feel threatened by CA. 展开更多
