Journal of the Chinese Library Association is an agency publication of the Chinese Library Association.Its purpose is to promote the exchange of library science,the popularization of library science knowledge,and the development of library undertakings.The journal has numerous columns,rich content,long publication time and wide distribution,laying an important foundation for the innovation,transformation and development of modern library cause.

An overview on the development of Chinese library and information science journals

This paper gives an overview of the history and the present status of Chinese library and information science journals, and introduces the operation and management of Chinese library and information science journals by taking Journal of Library Science In China, Library and Information Service, Journal of Academic Libraries, and Journal of Information Science as examples. Besides, six suggestions are given for the future development of Chinese library and information science journals.

Library science education and the competitiveness of its graduates:A survey and an analysis of Chinese library directors' perceptions

These authors have made a sampling survey of professional qualifications of library directors of various types of libraries in China.The subject coverage of this survey includes but not limited to the pattern of library position distribution and work conditions of those library science degree holders.It also studies such matters as the occupational roles of library science graduates in the library,the influencing factors of their professional competency(as it is perceived by library directors),library directors' opinion about the core curriculum of library science educational programs,etc.On the basis of this survey result and analysis,these authors attempt to show how Chinese librarians' professional competency can be identified and nurtured to a higher level of attainment.

Other Cities’Distribution Institutions for Publishing Books in Modern Chinese Libraries:Taking Huating Bookstore,the Shanghai General Distribution Office of Modern Zhejiang Library,as an Example

Many modern Chinese libraries have established distribution agencies in other cities to distribute books published or sold on consignment.Huating Bookstore,which was once the Shanghai General Distribution Office of Zhejiang Library in modern times,is one of them.On the basis of a brief description of modern Zhejiang Library and its book publishing,as well as the overview of Huating Bookstore,the paper introduces and analyzes the ZPL Publishing Book Catalogue sent by Huating Bookstore,and the ZPL publishing and selling consignment books issued by Huating Bookstore.It points out that Huating Bookstore is a bridge between the ZPL located in Hangzhou and various retail ZPL publishing bookstores in Shanghai.Their production and sales relationship is a mutually beneficial one.

On Public Library Service Brands

This paper makes a comprehensive analysis of the building of public library service brands in China since the initiation of the reform and opening up in 1978 and anticipate their future development in five aspects,i.e.,critical interpretation of its established culture and analysis of its characteristics,logic of the time,vivid practice,virtuous approaches,as well as future development.

A comparison of mapping strategies from DDC to CLC

Purpose: This study aims to discuss the strategies for mapping from Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC) numbers to Chinese Library Classification(CLC) numbers based on co-occurrence mapping while minimizing manual intervention.Design/methodology/approach: Several statistical tables were created based on frequency counts of the mapping relations with samples of USMARC records,which contain both DDC and CLC numbers. A manual table was created through direct mapping. In order to find reasonable mapping strategies,the mapping results were compared from three aspects including the sample size,the choice between one-to-one and one-to-multiple mapping relations,and the role of a manual mapping table.Findings: Larger sample size provides more DDC numbers in the mapping table. The statistical table including one-to-multiple DDC-CLC relations provides a higher ratio of correct matches than that including only one-to-one relations. The manual mapping table cannot produce a better result than the statistical tables. Therefore,we should make full use of statistical mapping tables and avoid the time-consuming manual mapping as much as possible.Research limitations: All the sample sizes were small. We did not consider DDC editions in our study. One-to-multiple DDC-CLC relations in the records were collected in the mapping table,but how to select one appropriate CLC number in the matching process needs to be further studied.Practical implications: The ratio of correct matches based on the statistical mapping table came up to about 90% by CLC top-level classes and 76% by the second-level classes in our study. The statistical mapping table will be improved to realize the automatic classification of e-resources and shorten the cataloging cycle significantly.Originality/value: The mapping results were investigated from different aspects in order to find suitable mapping strategies from DDC to CLC while minimizing manual intervention.The findings have facilitated the establishment of DDC-CLC mapping system for practical applications.

Nutrition and Applications of Rice Bran Oil: a Mini-overview

Rice bran oil is a healthy oil from many aspects.The oil has a balanced fatty acid profile comparing with many other vegetable oils.The key difference is the minor components or micronutrients or unsaponifiable matters contained in the oil that are very special and in larger percentages.The oil contains more than 1.5%oryzanol that gives nutritional and pharmaceutical functions from the studies so far.More studies are needed to demonstrate the wide functions in many aspects.The oil also contains large percentage of phytosterols which received huge amount of studies for nutritional applications.Furthermore,the oil contains tocopherols and tocotrienols,in which for the later particularly it gives many special functions including prevention of breast cancers for example.When the oil is properly processed and used in foods,those functions are more and more demonstrated in nutritional or biological studies.Thus the oil in food and pharmaceutical applications is in exploring both in academic studies and industrial practice.In this work,an overview of such progress is given.
