Since the early 1970s,discourse analysis has garnered significant attention across various academic disciplines, marked by the proliferation of numerous theoretical frameworks. Then the profound impact of discourse analysis on the field of translation research has become increasingly apparent, with a substantial body of translation studies embracing the discourse analysis approach. The disciplinary significance of discourse analysis has become undeniable.Contemporary China is in a relatively weak position in global cultural communication. To advance Chinese culture on the global stage,Chinese literary works serve as a precious channel. To effectively showcase the unique qualities of Chinese literature, translators must consider a multitude of influencing factors and address them judiciously to enable target language readers to fully immerse themselves in the essence of Chinese literary artistry. This paper takes Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translation of Kong Yiji as an example to elucidate the function of discourse analysis in translation of Chinese literature. 展开更多

Singapore's Chinese literature education has continuously evolved and advanced over the years, forming a unique style in global Chinese education, which can be described as: "Singapore pie". Through its bilingual policy, the Singapore government has been committed to creating a pool of bicultural talents, by supplementing the teaching of Chinese language with classes on Chinese literature and culture. This thesis seeks to understand the pros and cons of Chinese literature education in Singapore by analysing its development over the years. The teaching of Chinese literature began with the first wave of Chinese migration to Nanyang in the 19th century, and from there, it went through three phases of development: relocation, adjustment, and burgeoning. 展开更多

The reform ignited by digital media provided strong impetus to literary transformation at the turn of century in China. The market-led rise of online literature has destroyed the balance of traditional literature and resulted in a fundamental digital readjustment of the overall literary structure. The fourth medium, with its irresistible technological force, has led to a large-scale literary shift towards "being digital," thereby changing literary traditions of existence and expression. Such being the case, we need to clarify digital media's dual function of"deconstruction" and "construction" in this literary shift so as to input new ideas from a different academic perspective into literary theory of the digital era, turn digital media's challenge to tradition into a chance for literary innovation and make the new media into a powerful driving force and effective resource for Chinese literature in the new century. 展开更多

However, it has faced serious challenges in the past hundred years. In these eventful years for our nation, Chinese literature, like the Chinese people, has endured hardships and pondered ways of extricating the country from its malaise. In addition to being concerned over China's enlightenment, salvation, independence and rejuvenation, writers have also paid considerable attention to important international forces that had a strong influence on their country's fate. Concern over and understanding of the Korean nation bad a particular emotional charge and relevance to their own fate. Over the course of a century, Chinese literature's awareness of Korea went through four stages. In the first, Korea's loss of independence served as a mirror of China's own dangerous position, menaced on all sides; in the second, the Korean people were seen as comrades-in-arms combating foreign foes; in the third, when the Korean Peninsula was divided, North Koreans continued to be regarded as comrades-in-arms while South Korea was not acknowledged; and in the final stage, amidst the interaction between "China style" and the "Korean wave," Chinese literature's awareness of Korea expanded through a penetrating appreciation of Korean history involving deep ties of courage and uprightness. 展开更多

The “Liberation” Theme of Modern Chinese Literature

The concept of “liberation” has profoundly influenced the development of modern Chinese literature, giving rise to a “liberation” theme with profound implications.Modern Chinese literature can be analyzed from the joint perspectives of the liberators, the routes to liberation and the scope of liberation.Variations among the liberators have led to the two different concepts of self-liberation and being liberated;the differences in the routes to liberation have led to the intermixture of liberation based on persuasion and struggle-based liberation;and the difference in the scope of liberation derives from the alternation of the partial achievement of thoroughgoing liberation and the full realization of incremental liberation. The Chinese concept of liberation was strongly shaped by the Communist Party of China (CPC);compared to the work of those writers influenced by the CPC’s concept of “liberation,” the writings of ordinary non-Communist writers present “liberation” differently. The latter tend to adopt an either/or attitude toward liberation, whereas the former ensure that liberation theme reflects the interaction and blending of different types of “liberation” concepts, thus establishing a new form of “liberation” writing. To mark the centenary of the CPC,we have reviewed and explored the “liberation” theme of modern Chinese literature in the hope that we will gain a full understanding of the theoretical discourse and historical practice of “liberation,” taking a dialectical approach to freedom and responsibility, respecting tradition while boldly pursuing innovation, and striving to explore the realistic significance and ideological value of literary works. 展开更多

The Conceptualization of Qing-Era (1644-1911) Chinese Literature in Nineteenth Century Choson (1392-1910) Korea

In a poem composed in 1832, the Chosrn-Korean polymath Chrng Yagyong (1762-1836) declared his fidelity towards Confucian literary principles. Chrng's poem was a product of an elite education, and in both form and content, it embodied the ideals of the Chosrn elite: written in classical Chinese rather than Korean, it was an expression of cultural self-confidence. From the point of view of nationalism and its emphasis on vernaculars, it seems strange to define oneself through a cosmopolitan written language. But Chrng was no nationalist. He was a Confucian conservative, and the sense of distinction and difference that animated Chrng's poem was Confucian and literary. His articulation of such ideals manifested unease over the erosion of Confucian literary values in China and the prospect of the same occurring in Chos6n under Chinese influence. The source of that influence was books imported from China. What Chrng was reacting against was, at root, the commodification of literature and all that had entailed in Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) China. Although such concerns had grown increasingly urgent a half-century before, they had a long pedigree in Choson, stretching back to debates that had arisen in relation to Ming China and the principal emblem of the commodification of literature: commercial bookstores. This paper examines some of the principal differences between Chinese and Korean literary cultures that were embodied in Chang. It therefore begins with a brief overview of Chang and his poem, before turning to a discussion of some key sociopolitical and intellectual features that distinguished Chosrn's literary culture from that of China. Sixteenth-century attitudes towards bookstores are discussed to contextualize subsequent worries over Chinese books, with special attention given to the historical and historiographical dimensions of the question, before concluding with an assessment of the final moments of direct Chinese literary influence in Korea. 展开更多

Like many other ancient cultures,China possesses an impressive and celebrated literary heritage. The master poets of the medieval Tang Dynasty(618-907), for example, are rightfully known as some of the world’s best lyric poets; the adventures of the Monkey King and his company—as told in the classical Chinese narrative Journey to the West—have achieved a global following (in part due to TV adaptations and the like); and novels, short story collections and memoirs by expat Chinese authors living in the West have won major literary prizes and become international bestsellers. 展开更多
