Muslim Identity in Contemporary China Through the Lens of Chinese Nationalism

This article focuses on the concept of Chinese nationalism as a building and unifying tool of the nation.The Uyghurs are taken as a Muslim representative ethnic group in China as its forced Sinicization is the focus of global discussion,and the contention between the Uyghurs and the China state has become an international problem and a political headache for Beijing.This primarily Muslim group is one of the most numerous ethnic minorities in China,and has been affected by the assimilation policies adopted by the Chinese authorities with the purpose of strengthening the Chinese nation-state.The rise of national spirit in Chinese youth is unquestionable.Nation building has succeeded in almost all provinces.Only in a few of them does the state have to launch special educational and ideological programs,and sometimes resort to coercion to be successful.The aim of this article is to demonstrate that the Chinese nation building project is not complete despite the great efforts of the authorities.

Chemical composition of marine aerosols of the 26th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition

The ionic compositions of aerosol samples collected during the 26th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition were analyzed and the sources of ions were distinguished. Cl-, Na＋, SO2-, NO3-, and Mg2＋ were the most abundant ionic components in the marine aerosols. Cl- and Na＋ contributed over 70% in the total ionic composition, indicating the sea salt is still the primary composition in marine aerosols, followed by the sulfate as the secondary ionic component existed as NH4N03, NH4HSO4, （NH4）2S04. The maximal sea salt concentrations were found at around 40~S and could be attributed to greater winds. The concentrations of methane sulfonic acid （MSA） appeared increasing trend from the low to high latitudes, possibly caused by lower temperature in air and higher marine biological processes in the marginal waters in Antarctica. The correlation and factor analyzes were used to investigate possible sources of these ions. Cl-, Br-, Na＋, K＋, Mg2＋ and Ca2＋ had predominantly marine sources; while F-, NO3 and NH＋ had mostly anthropogenic sources; MSA had marine biogenic sources. The concentrations of SO42- were influenced by both marine and anthropogenic sources.

China’s Security Protection of Chinese Nationals in the Middle East

Strengthening the security protection of overseas Chinese is an important means for China to safeguard its overseas interests.The Middle East is in turmoil with frequent security incidents involving Chinese nationals and their assets.Ensuring the safety of Chinese natioanls is an important part of promoting the sound development of China and the Middle East relations.Drawing on the questionnaire survey,this paper examines the security threats and risks faced by Chinese nationals in some Middle Eastern states,and seeks to explore how China might enhance its security protection capability accordingly for Chinese nationals in the Middle East.It shows that the Chinese government has taken a series of measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese nationals,by strengthening the top-level design and mechanism coordination,improving the consular protection system and overseas evacuation capabilities,and participating in security governance and non-traditional security cooperation in the Middle East.

Constructing the Chinese Nation:Discussions among Chinese Social Elites in the First Half of the 20th Century

This study aimed to review the early 20th century discussions among Chinese social elites on the definition of the“Chinese nation"and how a corresponding national identity can be constructed.These discussions gradually formed the basis of society's notions on the Chinese nation and the Chinese identity.It can be concluded that the discussions were of great significance because of three reasons.First,they contributed to the formation of a social consensus that the Chinese nation is a national entity,existing as a being in itself.Second,they further clarified that the Chinese nation is the highest-level identity of all the Chinese people.Lastly,they provided a clear direction for the establishment of a national value—"plurality and unity"—which was advocated by the Communist Party of China(CPC).

The State Narrative of the Chinese Nation

The state narrative of the Chinese nation is to analyze and illustrate the term“Chinese nation"from the perspective of state,aiming to highlight an innate attributes—the nature of starehoodof the Chinese nation.Chinese nation today,unlike"Chinese nation"in its historical form,is a typical nation in modern sense(as the‘nation"in“nation-state").The one in the past originated from the continuous interaction and exchanges among various ethnic groups in ancient China.Such interaction,communication and exchange promoted integration of the ethnic groups,and thus gave the“Chinese nation"in its early stages.Further,the modern form of the"Chinese nation"is endowed with new connotation through modern social and cultural construction.In a word,there is intrinsic continuity between the two forms,each with different connotations in different historical contexts.Both of them,however,are inseparably connected with the state.As a result,the comprehensive understanding of the Chinese nation can never be achieved without insights into as well as detailed analysis of its nature of statehood from the perspective of state.

The Concept and Nature of Northern Ethnic Dynasties from the Historical View on the Chinese Nation

In recent years,the concept"northern ethnic dynasties"has been widely used when referring to dynasties established by ethnic groups from northern China,including Liao,Jin,Yuan,and Qing dynasty.When it comes to the prolonged debates on the relation between ethnic groups and state,the traditional narrative of the dynastic history of Central Plains,which holds"sinicization"as its principal line,has been challenged;and the academia has been focusing on how to elaborate features and state forms of these northern ethnic dynasties.This article argues that,only by returning to the dynasty-based narrative of the evolvement of northern ethnic regimes,can we break the shackle of western-style"nation state"narrative;can we understand the fact that dynasticity transcends ethnicity in Chinese history;and can we thereby establish the correct view of history on the Chinese nation.
