By introducing two famous works of Mr.Zhang Kaiji in his later years, the reconstruction plan of Beijing Planetarium and the Museum of Chinese Revolution and the Museum of Chinese History, the paper analyzes the "courtyard·yard" space he once imagined in the modern city and large public buildings, and expounds the value and significance of his conception. The author believes that the expansion and transformation of important works should be based on historical research and centered on the spirit of space, and the intangible space outside of tangible entities should be carefully treated,so as to better complete the transmission of modern Chinese space experience. 展开更多

The Practical Logic of the Comintern from the Perspective of World Revolution

As a "World Communist Party" organization, the Comintern was profoundly influential in the history of the international Communist movement. The Comintern was established on the theoretical foundation of the theory of world revolution, but it underestimated how long that would take. Despite being the unified organizational vehicle of the "World Communist Party," the Comintern underestimated the complexity of relations between itself and each country's Communist Party, among these national Communist parties, and between Communist and social democratic parties. A classic example was the fact that although the Comintern developed close relationships with the Communist Party of China (CPC), it underestimated the particularity of Chinese revolution. 展开更多

With the birth of scientific socialism in the mid 19th century the socialist movement became an irresistible historical trend. The victory of the October Revolution turned socialism from an ideal into a reality and brought Marxism to a new stage: the stage of Leninism. The October Revolution changed the direction of world history and the Chinese revolution, a continuation of the October Revolution, became part of the proletarian-socialist world revolution. Any talk about Marxism in isolation from China's characteristics is merely Marxism in the abstract, Marxism in a vacuum. We can put Marxism into practice only when it is integrated with the specific characteristics of our country and acquires a definite national form. Deng Xiaoping Theory comes down in one continuous line from Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought and is Marxism in practice with the characteristics of the times and national traits. The magnificent achievements in the development of contemporary Chinese society are the outcome of unwavering adherence to and development of socialism with Chinese characteristics. In the context of economic globalization, we are still living in a transitional time from capitalism to socialism, an era started with the October Revolution. The 21 st century will see the rejuvenation of socialism, for the replacement of capitalism by socialism is an inevitable trend of world history. 展开更多

The practice of fanxin, literally, "turning hearts and minds," was widespread in the Liberated Areas of Northern China during the Land Reform Movement of 194648. This article examines the forms of power relations emerged during the course of revolutionary education and transformation which were geared towards awakening the peasants' "self-consciousness of mastership." Taking ku/suffering as the focal point, the article investigates two main types of thought-power, "speaking bitterness" (suku) and "visiting the suffering people" (fangku), both of which were important to the practices of fanxin. Through the investigation of fanxin, this empirical study reveals an important feature of the Chinese revolution: that is, the significance of the mind/heart, thought, or "spiritual elements." 展开更多

Women’s emancipation is an important part of the people’s liberation movement led by the Communist Party of China.Improving women’s political status is the basic condition for improving their social welfare rights and interests.Based on the data from county gazetteers covering more than 1,700 counties, the censuses of 1990 and 2000,and other representative surveys,we conducted an empirical study on the long-term effect of women’s political status on the sex ratio at birth. Our research found that the higher the ratio of female Communist Party members in each county in 1950,the more normal was the sex ratio at birth in the following 50 years. The improved political status of women aged 16-20 significantly raised the proportion of girls among surviving children, especially in the era of family planning. This demographic study provides empirical historical evidence for the first time on one aspect of the long-term social impact of the mission of the Chinese people’s liberation. 展开更多

This paper aims to contribute to the ongoing debate about the "socialist New Man" in modem Chinese literature. Focusing on the ideas of humanity, individuality and the people, it attempts to show the prehistory of the "New Man," i.e., the emergence of the concept-figure of "the people" out of the discourse of human!ty. The making of a new historical subjectivity of "the people" was part and parcel of the singular historical experience of the Chinese Revolution and the precondition for its social experiments. Yet this issue receives insufficient critical attention. This paper gives an outline of this idea's genealogy, by concentrating on Guo Moruo's literary-intellectual trajectory. It will show how the enlightenment project and romantic historical imagination paved the way for the concept of the people, and how the new subjectivity of the people prepared for the ideal of the new man. 展开更多
