“Chinese Values” and Innovation in Philosophy and Social Sciences in Present Day China

＂Chinese values＂ is a concept defined in relation to ＂American values,＂ ＂Asian values＂ and the ＂Washington Consensus.＂ It is a product of the long-term development and evolution of Chinese society＇s value system and constitutes the conceptual representation and theoretical enhancement of the complexity of current Chinese values. We analyze the historical formation, evolutionary logic, pluralistic framework, underlying reasons, and inner grounds of present day China＇s complex values in a multi-dimensional context that involves history and the present as well as China and the world, looking at the synchronous coexistence in modern China of diachronic conflicts that unfolded over several hundred years in the course of Western modernization. Our contention is that present day China＇s complex value reality and value concepts should be approached by using complex ideas and techniques. In the dynamic process of integrating manifold clues and multiple changes, we will vigorously safeguard ＂Chinese interests,＂ reasonably fulfill ＂China＇s responsibilities,＂ consciously seek a ＂Chinese path,＂ soberly respond to ＂expectations of China,＂ consciously break down ＂China＇s problems＂ and appropriately demonstrate ＂China＇s confidence,＂ in order to better perform the positive function of philosophy and social sciences in interpreting and guiding the development of society.

The Cultural Discovery and Practical Implications of “Chinese Values”

The social reforms in China since the late 1970 s represent an arduous process in which the Chinese nation,in its own way,has reflected upon the many disadvantages of the ＂civilization of modernity,＂ and has explored,created and practiced ＂Chinese values,＂ pursuing and shaping new spiritual convictions and new（rational） value beliefs for its national culture.In a deeper sense,＂Chinese values＂ are endowed with a marked orientation toward practice and follow the logic of genuinely implementing society＇s ＂public values＂ on the basis of the intrinsic and organic integration of the personal and public and the national and cosmopolitan.This manifests the pursuit of a noble belief in justice and a commitment to a universal and genuine good life for the Chinese populace today.What ＂Chinese values＂ seek to forge is an image of ＂the Chinese＂ that manifests not only the disposition and breadth of vision of a contemporary ＂citizen of the world,＂ but also the fine traits of tolerance,benevolence,responsibility,and courage,as well as self-esteem,self-improvement,confidence,and self-reliance.

Cut-off Values of Diagnostic Indices to Detect Iron Deficiency in Chinese Breast-fed Infants

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most prevalent nutritional deficiency worldwide. The commonly used cut-off values for identifying iron deficiency are extrapolated from older children and may not be suitable for infants. Therefore, our study aimed to establish appropriate cut-off values for the evaluation of iron status in Chinese infants. Pregnant women who delivered at 〉37 gestational weeks with normal iron status were recruited. Later, infants with normal birth weight and who were breastfed in the first 4 months were selected. Blood samples were collected to assess hemoglobin, serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, mean corpuscular volume and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin. Cut-offs of all iron indices were determined as the limit of 95% confidence interval.

Normative values of pulmonary function testing in Chinese adults

Objectives To compare the difference in pulmonary function between Caucasians and Chinese and assess the best reference values of pulmonary function for Chinese adults.Methods Values for pulmonary function were predicted by tests on 4773 Chinese healthy subjects (male: 2560, female: 2213, aged 15-78 years) in six parts (north, northeast, northwest, east, southwest and south) of China. Prediction equations of the European Community for Steel and Coal (ECSC), other equations for overseas Chinese or for Caucasians were also selected. The regression coefficients of forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1), FEV 1/FVC, total lung capacity (TLC) and residual volume (RV) were summarized. Results ECSC predictions were closer to the Chinese ones than other selected equations. Comparison with ECSC predictions showed that on average the values for FVC, FEV 1 were 5.3% smaller in Chinese males and 3.3% smaller in Chinese females, with the maximal differences in south China and the minimal differences in North China. RV and TLC in Chinese were lower than in Caucasians (males 4.8%, 5.5%, respectively; females 8.7% and 6.0%, respectively). Conversion factors were given for adjusting ECSC equations to fit Chinese. Conclusions For predicting values of pulmonary function in Chinese, we suggest to use the equations reported here. Alternatively, ECSC regression equations may be used with appropriate conversion factors.

Controversies on the Values for Health Instruments of Chinese Medicine

Currently, there are increasing debates on the necessity of health instruments in Chinese medicine（CM） emerging in China. This study aims to reevaluate its status and values. Analyzing the causes, limits, advantages, and properties characters of health instruments in CM, it is found that weak fundamental research, incomplete self-awareness, and complicated social factors are the primary causes of debates. A comprehensive analysis showed health instruments in CM have health evaluation benefits to people from a dominant Chinese culture, meet the requirements of cultural background, and bring long-term value to Chinese instrument researches. However, its values and status should be treated differently depending on various subtypes. Although little theoretical and practical evidences proved that patients-reported health instruments in CM should be proposed independently, the doctors- and nurses-reported questionnaires are necessary. With this in mind, the study group proposes the ＇Chinese cultural instruments（CCIs）＇ and ＇health-related CCIs＇. The latter one aims to evaluate the health status of people in a dominant Chinese culture. The CCIs theory represents Chinese instrument researches on a larger regional and higher level, and resolves the debates on instruments between CM and Western medicine in China. Health instruments in CM bring more scientific and social benefits for Chinese instrument researches. However, it does not include cultural demands, and lacks scientific significance. CCIs have all its virtues, and add solutions to the latter＇s theory bottleneck and scientific debates, thus bringing increased benefits to clinical assessment in complementary and alternative medicine researches.
