This pilot research is to explore the efficacy of peer feedback in translation teaching and learning in the context where College English Test has great influence on university’s language teaching and learning through a case study.It will shed some light on pedagogical thinking in the context of Chinese ESL teaching and learning.

A Study on ESP Chinese-English Translating Practice Based on the Translation Memetics

＂Memes＂ translation theory has been applied in translation practice, especially in the field of ESP （English for Specific Purposes） translation. In view of this, based on the relevant ＂memes＂ translation theory and the professional module positioning expressed by ESP, this article analyzes ESP language memes analysis and illustrates some related translation strategies employed in ESP Chinese-English translating practice properly, such as direct translation and indirect translation, semantic translation and communicative translation, foreignizing translation and domesticating translation, etc.

On Application of the “Sameness Relation” in Chinese-English Translation Practice

The theme of this article is mainly to explore the application of the"Sameness Relation"into the Chinese-English trans-lation practice.In view of the theoretical guidance of sameness relation into the practice of the Chinese-English translation,this pa-per first points out a liable mistake in Chinese-English translation due to an inadequate knowledge of the"Sense Relations",andthen defines the linguistic term"sense relations","Sameness relation""and relevant "Semantics".Next this text continues to ana-lyze how the sameness relations are applied into the translation from the five main aspects.The reference and help of the samenessrelations finally demonstrate the realistic importance of the semantics to the Chinese-English translation,attracting much wider at-tention to other linguistic theories which is great of value to Chinese-English translation.

Context Awareness and Word-rendering in the Teaching of Chinese-English Translation

In the teaching of Chinese-English（C-E） translation, the cultivation of students＇ awareness of context is very important. As far as word-rendering in C-E translation is concerned, contextual analysis can help student solve such problems as the precise comprehension of the SL（source language） words, the translation of vague words and polysemous words, the conveyance of implicature and non-correspondence of word meaning.

Comments on Nigel Wiseman s A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine(Ⅰ)——On the“Word-for-word”Literal Approach to Translation

Comments were made on the ＂word-for-word＂ literal translation method used by Mr. Nigel Wiseman in A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine. He believes that only literal translation can reflect Chinese medical concepts accurately. The so-called ＂word-for-word＂ translation is actually ＂English-word-for- Chinese-character＂ translation. First, the authors of the dictionary made a list of Single Characters with English Equivalents, and then they gave each character of the medical term an English equivalent according to the list. Finally, they made some minor modifications to make the rendering grammatically smoother. Many English terms thus produced are confusing. The defect of the word-for-word literal translation stems from the erroneous idea that a single character constitutes the basic element of meaning corresponding to the notion of ＂word＂ in English, and the meaning of a disyllabic or polysyllabic Chinese word is the simple addition of the constituent characters. Another big mistake is the negligence of the polysemy of Chinese characters. One or two English equivalents can by no means cover all the various meanings of a single character which is a polysemous monosyllabic word. Various examples were cited from this dictionary to illustrate the mistakes.

On Errors in Chinese-English Translation of Public Signs

With more attentions being paid to the research of the Chinese-English translation of public signs,errors and mistakes can be frequently observed in some places and occasions due to different cultural backgrounds as well as diversified function of public signs.For that reason,the author venture to analyses the problems existing in Chinese-English translation of public signs on the level of linguistic and culture such as spelling errors,harsh tones and so on.Meanwhile the author offer some strategies and principles of translation based on the communicative translation method and as well as the quality of translators perspectives,including the methods of functional priority,of utilization of Pin Yin and so on,hoping to optimize the quality of the public signs translation so as to publicize China and promote the image of China and arose the attention and awareness of the translators.

Status of Practical Translation

Talking about translation, it seems that people have been researching the pure translation or the pure translation principle. Some researches consider the literature as highbrow art, while count practical translation as rustic art. In fact, since the World War II, translation has developed and involved all fields other than literary translation. In particular, since China joined the World Trade Organization, the practical translation was growing vigorously. However, in recent years, the practical translation is facing frustration. Internal and external reasons can explain the phenomenon.

On the Cultural Untranslatability in Chinese-English Literary Translation

The paper is intended to study the cultural untranslatability in Chinese-English literary translation and its compensation with a view to find some practical strategies in translation when untranslatabiltiy occurs. Based on Eugene A. Nida’s classification of language culture, the author analyzes causes of cultural untranslatability in terms of ecological culture, material culture, social culture, religious culture, and linguistic culture through specific examples. As the cultural untranslatability is conditioned, variable, and dynamic, some translation strategies are proposed for tranferring untranslatability to translatability.

Chinese-English translation of banners for conventions and exhibitions： A skopos perspective

As China＇s convention and exhibition industry strides forward to internationalization, Chinese-English translation of banners for conventions and exhibitions is more frequent than ever before. Based on Vermeer＇s skopos theory, the core theory of functionalist approaches, the paper analyzes authentic examples and highlights the techniques of translation for this type. A brief analysis of the classical poetry Chinese-English translation： From the perspective of ＂Beauty in three aspects＂

With the growing of mutual communication between different cultures, the translation of classical Chinese poetry becomes quite significant in the contemporary times. This paper first briefly introduces classical Chinese poetry, major classical Chinese poetry translation schools and their representatives, and professor XU Yuan-zhong＇s famous principle of ＂Beauty in three aspects＂. In order to help disseminate this part of Chinese culture through discussing how the reader of the translation may be inspired, moved and aesthetically entertained in the same way as one reads the original, this paper will analyze the classical poetry Chinese-English translation from the perspective of ＂Beauty in three aspects＂, namely, in three parts--beauty in meaning, beauty in sound and beauty in form. Thus, it serves the purpose to offer a relatively comprehensive view of the classical poetry Chinese-English translation.

Translation Quality Assessment： Bridge the Gap between Theory and Practice

Translation Quality Assessment （TQA） is a central concern for both academic research and translation practice. Yet consensus on the issue has almost never been reached among theorists and practitioners. In this paper, a detailed comparison between academic and professional assessment has been made mainly in terms of text type, assessment criteria and models. It is believed that a ＂one size fits all＂ model across academy and industry is neither possible nor necessary. However, the gaps in between could be narrowed down by increasing communication and cooperation between theorists and practitioners, who are advised to turn their focus to translator＇s competence and evaluation process.

Practice Analysis on the Teaching Theory and Skills of English Translation

As a universal language, English makes a better communication between China and the developed countries;English language teaching has become increasingly important in more and more Chinese Schools. At the beginning, when Chinese students start to learn a second language, they need to translate the second language such as English into Chinese in the first hand, and this procedure will help them to understand and learn English better. For English language translation teachers, they need to research and create the suitable, effective method of learning English translation for most students constantly in order to improve the English translation learning efficiency of the Chinese students. The local culture of China is quite different from the culture of other English speaking countries. When our Chinese students study English language translation, at the same time, they need to learn the different culture in different countries and learn how to accept and face up the cultural background difference between our country and the other English speaking countries. In the meantime, during the time of teaching English translation, the English translation subject teachers need to guide the students to learn and understand the difference in practice, and help them to establish a comprehensive and correct idea of learning English translation through teaching correct and different translation skills.

Teaching Cultural Strategies for Undergraduate Chinese-English Translation in Chinese Context

Although in China, ordinary translation theories favor the foreignizing strategy in translating culture, and outside China, there are opposing strategies between the cultural studies school and deconstructionist school, translation teachers should be fully aware of their respective revelations and limitations to translation teaching. This paper holds that in undergraduate C-E （Chinese-English~ translation teaching, the linguistic strategy is assimilation rather than alienation, thus, idiomaticness and preciseness should be emphasized. In teaching cultural translation strategy, first, we should promote students＇ cultural competence, which includes culture perceptive competence, culture comparison competence, culture evaluation competence, and culture mediation competence. Second, we need differentiate cultural strategies to translate literary and practical materials. In translating practical materials, functionality determines adaptation or exoticization; in translating literary materials, when cultural factor is the topic of writing, exoticization is employed for the main except that part of politeness system in institutional culture, abstract concrete conversion and description affection model in spiritual culture are adapted. When cultural factor is the background of writing, it is the target text aestheticality and readership intertextuality that determine adaptation or exoticization.

On Application of Nida’s Priorities in Translation

This paper analyzes Nida’s theory of translation, also his system of priorities. The paper uses examples to illustrate the application of Nida’s four priorities in the practice of English Chinese and Chinese English translation and concludes that we can apply the system to help the receptors of second language and source language to have the closest response.

Translation Studies在中国的名与实——兼谈翻译学的学科范围和界线问题

Translation Studies在当今中国学界名实不符,名实不符造成学科概念混淆,学科概念混淆造成学术理路混乱,学术理路混乱造成翻译理论与翻译实践关系失调。二者关系之失调致使翻译实践常失去规矩方圆,翻译理论多流于清谈空论,所谓翻译研究成了一方谁都可以在里边建构理论的无界限领地。针对这种现状,本文辨析了均用Translation Studies为其能指的译介学和翻译学之差异,指出了两个学科学科概念混淆的原因,明确了译介学和翻译学各自的学科概念,并呼吁翻译学应划定学科范围,保持学科特点,恢复翻译理论和翻译实践之间的良性互动关系。

On the Translation of Chinese Four-character Idioms Loaded with Color Words

Chinese four-character idioms loaded with color words are the typical symbol of the Chinese culture and their transition is important to Chinese-English dictionaries.The quality of the dictionary and users' understanding are affected by the correctness and appropriateness of their translation.This paper mainly focuses on the translation of four-character Chinese idioms with color words in New Century Chinese-English Dictionary.The research shows that there are three strategies for Chinese fourcharacter idioms loaded with color words in the dictionaries:literal translation,free translation and the integration of literal translation and annotative translation.
