A Critical Analysis of the Chinese Translation of“Zero Report”-Towards the Standardization of Terminology from the Perspective of Global Health Communication

The term“zero report,”an essential component of public health surveillance systems,is used to denote the reporting of zero cases of a specified disease during a given period.Its Chinese translation,“零报告”,has often been misinterpreted by the public as“no report”or“absence of report,”resulting in confusion and misinformation.This paper examines the linguistic and cultural factors contributing to this misinterpretation,exploring the semantic discrepancies between“zero”in English and“零”in Chinese.Using a mixed-methods approach that combines theoretical analysis and empirical survey data,the paper highlights the challenges of translating technical terminology across linguistic and cultural contexts.It also provides recommendations for improving the translation of“zero report”and other public health terms to ensure clear global communication.

A Case Study of Periodical Terminologies’Mis-translations in History of Chinese Journalism by Ko Kung-chen under Analysis-Synthesis Translation Mode

From the perspective of analysis-synthesis translation mode,this paper discusses the translator’s responsibility and the translator’s role in the translation of historiography,based on the case of Ko Kung-chen’s History of Chinese Journalism.Missionary J.S.Roberts believed that translation is the logical combination of two processes of analysis and synthesis.The analysis process is characterized by understanding,emphasizing accurate understanding and professional analysis of the source text,while the synthesis process focuses on the transformation of language and culture.The two processes are dependent,forming the whole process of translation altogether.As the indisputable subject of translation,the translator should assume his own subjective responsibility in the two processes.The translator should be responsible for the fact and professional academics in the analysis process,and language and culture and translation itself in the synthesis process,playing the role of a reviewer,disseminator and translator to ensure that the translation text would be correct,accurate and professional so as to realize the value of himself and translation.

English Translation of Political Terminologies with Chinese Characteristics:A Case Study of the 20th CPC National Congress Report

The philosophies, thoughts, strategies, and measures introduced in the 20th National Congress report of the Communist Party of China chart the course for the nation’s future development. The political terminologies with Chinese characteristics presented in the report form a crucial part of China’s distinct political development model, while also presenting considerable challenges for translation. Drawing on a Chinese-English parallel corpus of political terminologies from the 20th Congress report, this study explores the translation of these terms with a focus on four-character patterns, numerical abbreviations, and idiomatic expressions. The goal is to develop effective translation strategies and contribute to research on translating political terminologies with Chinese characteristics.

Terminology Translations of Austin’s Speech Act Tripartite Model in China

Judging from the references, Chinese scholars have dozens of terminology translations on the British analytic philosopher Austin’s locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. There is no unified translation for it, and scholars did not cause enough attention to this. Thus teachers use the terms in the classroom inconsistently, resulting in doctoral students, graduates and undergraduates writing dissertations in confusion and chaos. This paper reviews and trims 25 frequently -used terminology translations of Speech Act Tripartite Model since 1955. Furthermore, some suggestions on Chinese terminology translations of it are put forward as well.

A Study to View International Standard Terminology from the English Translation of Terms Related to Tongue Proper in an Original Foreign Work

By analyzing the original foreign work Tongue Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine and taking it as a reference,this paper made a comparative study on the word-formation patterns,translation methods along with the translations of specific terms of tongue proper,such as tongue colors,forms of tongue,motilities of tongue and sublingual veins in International Standard Chinese-English Basic Nomenclature of Chinese Medicine and WHO International Standard Terminologies on Traditional Medicine in the Western Pacific Region.From a cross-cultural perspective,this paper emphasized the significance of the standardization of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)terminology,and analyzed the merits and demerits of the English translations of TCM terms related to tongue proper from 2 different books,so as to provide references for the standardization of TCM terminology.

Exploration of French-Chinese Translation Methods of Electrical Engineering Terminology Using Online Image-Text Retrieval Mode

In this article,I trace my career from an early interest in language that eventually led me to engage in Chinese medical translation.Born in the United Kingdom in 1954,I gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in German and Spanish from the University of Heriot-Watt,Edinburgh.Subsequent study of Chinese took me to Taiwan,China,where I gained an interest in Chinese medicine and developed a coherent linguistic approach to Chinese medical term translation,which I and various colleagues have systematically applied in the translation and compilation of numerous works spanning modern texts,classics,dictionaries,and language-learning materials.Our translation approach,though conforming to principles universally recognized by translation theorists,has proven to be highly controversial,with opponents in both Western and Chinese circles.

English Translation of Public Signs in Chinese from a Pragmatic Perspective

This paper applies Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation theory to analyzing the English translation of Chinese public signs and its pragmatic functions. It finds that communicative translation is typically used to fulfill the communicative function of public signs. Both communicative and semantic translation are employed to adapt to different situational contexts, in order to preserve the pragmatic functions of the Chinese public signs. The differences between Chinese and English lead to pragmatic errors in translation, making the translator’s bilingual proficiency and familiarity with English culture necessary. The fundamental principle of public sign translation is to be concise and clear, which often requires modifying some complex rhetorical devices from Chinese in translation.

With more attentions being paid to the research of the Chinese-English translation of public signs,errors and mistakes can be frequently observed in some places and occasions due to different cultural backgrounds as well as diversified function of public signs.For that reason,the author venture to analyses the problems existing in Chinese-English translation of public signs on the level of linguistic and culture such as spelling errors,harsh tones and so on.Meanwhile the author offer some strategies and principles of translation based on the communicative translation method and as well as the quality of translators perspectives,including the methods of functional priority,of utilization of Pin Yin and so on,hoping to optimize the quality of the public signs translation so as to publicize China and promote the image of China and arose the attention and awareness of the translators.

On the Cultural Untranslatability in Chinese-English Literary Translation

The paper is intended to study the cultural untranslatability in Chinese-English literary translation and its compensation with a view to find some practical strategies in translation when untranslatabiltiy occurs. Based on Eugene A. Nida’s classification of language culture, the author analyzes causes of cultural untranslatability in terms of ecological culture, material culture, social culture, religious culture, and linguistic culture through specific examples. As the cultural untranslatability is conditioned, variable, and dynamic, some translation strategies are proposed for tranferring untranslatability to translatability.

A brief analysis of the classical poetry Chinese-English translation： From the perspective of ＂Beauty in three aspects＂

With the growing of mutual communication between different cultures, the translation of classical Chinese poetry becomes quite significant in the contemporary times. This paper first briefly introduces classical Chinese poetry, major classical Chinese poetry translation schools and their representatives, and professor XU Yuan-zhong＇s famous principle of ＂Beauty in three aspects＂. In order to help disseminate this part of Chinese culture through discussing how the reader of the translation may be inspired, moved and aesthetically entertained in the same way as one reads the original, this paper will analyze the classical poetry Chinese-English translation from the perspective of ＂Beauty in three aspects＂, namely, in three parts--beauty in meaning, beauty in sound and beauty in form. Thus, it serves the purpose to offer a relatively comprehensive view of the classical poetry Chinese-English translation.

Teaching Cultural Strategies for Undergraduate Chinese-English Translation in Chinese Context

Although in China, ordinary translation theories favor the foreignizing strategy in translating culture, and outside China, there are opposing strategies between the cultural studies school and deconstructionist school, translation teachers should be fully aware of their respective revelations and limitations to translation teaching. This paper holds that in undergraduate C-E （Chinese-English~ translation teaching, the linguistic strategy is assimilation rather than alienation, thus, idiomaticness and preciseness should be emphasized. In teaching cultural translation strategy, first, we should promote students＇ cultural competence, which includes culture perceptive competence, culture comparison competence, culture evaluation competence, and culture mediation competence. Second, we need differentiate cultural strategies to translate literary and practical materials. In translating practical materials, functionality determines adaptation or exoticization; in translating literary materials, when cultural factor is the topic of writing, exoticization is employed for the main except that part of politeness system in institutional culture, abstract concrete conversion and description affection model in spiritual culture are adapted. When cultural factor is the background of writing, it is the target text aestheticality and readership intertextuality that determine adaptation or exoticization.
