As a river with more than 3000 reservoirs in its watershed, the Yellow River has been affected by dams not only on the sediment load, but also on the water quality.Water-sediment regulation scheme(WSRS),which has been carried out annually in the Yellow River since 2002,is a typical human activity affecting river water quality.Chromophoric dissolved organic matter(CDOM)in river is susceptible to changes in ecological and environmental conditions as well as human activities. Here,we report variations in dissolved organic carbon concentrations, compositions and sources of CDOM in time series samples in the lower Yellow River during WSRS.In addition,a parallel factor fluorescence analysis(PARAFAC)method is applied to identify different fluorescent components in water samples during WRSR,showing four major components including tryptophan-like component(C1),microbial humic-like component(C2),terrestrial humic-like component(C3)and tyrosine-like component(C4).In general,C1 increased after water regulation, while C2 and C3 increased after sediment regulation, indicating that the water and sediment released by the dam have different effects on CDOM compositions.Under the impacts of the dam, source of CDOM in the lower Yellow River is mainly autochthonous related to microbial activities, and is regulated by the terrestrial input during WSRS period.Sediment resuspension inhibits microbial activities and reduces the production of autochthonous CDOM.Overall, human activities especially WSRS,as exemplified here, significantly alter the quality and quantity of CDOM in the lower Yellow River, affecting CDOM dynamics and biogeochemical processes in the estuarine environment. 展开更多

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter(CDOM)is a key component of organic matter that contributes to the ecological functioning of lakes. The lakes in Taihu Lake Basin play an important role in maintaining regional ecological stabilities;however, the optical characteristics of the CDOM in the upstream and downstream lakes in this basin have not yet been systematically studied. Here, the optical characteristics of CDOM in ten lakes of upstream and downstream of the Taihu Lake Basin were studied using UV-Visible and excitation-emission matrix spectroscopies.Three different fluorophores consisting of two humic-like components(C1,C2)and one protein-like component(C3)were identified by parallel factor analysis.Soil or surface erosion was responsible for the higher abund-ance of C1 in the upstream lakes, and increased biological activities accounted for the higher abundance of C3 in the downstream lakes.Rainfall erosion in the wet season led to an increase in CDOM.We also found that the photodegradation and flocculation degree, which played a significant role in reducing CDOM,were higher in downstream lakes than in upstream lakes.Optical analysis of CDOM provides a promising method for monitoring water qualities(e.g.,total phosphorus and potassium permanganate index)in each lake.Re-ductions in soil or surface erosion in the upstream are needed to improve water quality. 展开更多

The Southern Ocean is an important carbon sink pool and plays a critical role in the global carbon cycling. The Amundsen Sea was reported to be highly productive in inshore area in the Southern Ocean. In order to investigate the influence of transparent exopolymer particles(TEP)on the behavior of dissolved organic carbon(DOC)in this region,a comprehensive study was conducted, encompassing both open water areas and highly productive polynyas. It was found that microbial heterotrophic metabolism is the primary process responsible for the production of humic-like fluorescent components in the open ocean. The relationship between apparent oxygen utilization and the two humic-like components can be accurately described by a power-law function, with a conversion rate consistent with that observed globally. The presence of TEP was found to have little impact on this process.Additionally, the study revealed the accumulation of DOC at the sea surface in the Amundsen Sea Polynya, suggesting that TEP may play a critical role in this phenomenon. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the dynamics and surface accumulation of DOC in the Amundsen Sea Polynya, and provide valuable insights into the carbon cycle in this region. 展开更多

In a typical Case-2 coastal water environment(here, the Pearl River Estuary(PRE),China),chromophoric dissolved organic matter(CDOM)and suspended particulates dominate the water optical properties, and CDOM fluorescence contributes considerably to surface water reflectance. In this paper,an ultraviolet(UV)to visible scheme to retrieve CDOM absorption(ag)is developed based on a set of in situ observations.First, the CDOM UV absorption and spectral slope(Sg)are derived directly from the visible remote sensing reflectance;then the Sg is extrapolated to obtain the spectrum from UV to visible spectral range. This algorithm performs well, with an overall mean absolute percent difference(MAPD)of^30%,~5%and^6%for the estimation of ag in 250–450 nm,Sg over 250–400 nm,and 250–700 nm,respectively. The effectiveness and stability of the algorithm is further demonstrated in capturing the distribution pattern of CDOM absorption in the PRE from satellite ocean color imagery with multiple spatial and spectral resolution, namely:the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite(VIIRS)(750 m/Multispectral),the Ocean and Land Color Instrument(OLCI)(300 m/Multispectral),the Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean(HICO)(100 m/Hyperspectral),and the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager(OLI)(30 m/Multispectral).The UV to visible scheme can benefit the CDOM absorption estimation in two aspects:1)it is free from the disturbance of suspended matter;2)it avoids uncertainties caused by the low signalto-noise ratio(SNR)of ag measurements in the visible range. The algorithm is effective in revealing multiple scales of variation of CDOM absorption from ocean color observations. 展开更多

Interactions between dissolved organic matter(DOM)and bacteria are central in the biogeochemical cycles of aquatic ecosystems;however, the relative importance of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon(BDOC)compared with other environmental variables in structuring the bacterial communities needs further investigation. Here,we investigated bacterial communities, chromophoric DOM(CDOM)characteristics and physico-chemical parameters as well as examined BDOC via bioassay incubations in large eutrophic Lake Taihu,China,to explore the importance of BDOC for shaping bacterial community structures and co-occurrence patterns. We found that the proportion of BDOC(%BDOC)correlated significantly and positively with the DOC concentration and the index of the contribution of recent produced autochthonous CDOM(BIX).%BDOC,further correlated positively with the relative abundance of the tryptophan-like component and negatively with CDOM aromaticity, indicating that autochthonous production of protein-like CDOM was an important source of BDOC.The richness of the bacterial communities correlated negatively with%BDOC,indicating an enhanced number of species in the refractory DOC environments.%BDOC was identified as a significant stronger factor than DOC in shaping bacterial community composition and the co-occurrence network, suggesting that substrate biodegradability is more significant than DOC quantity determining the bacterial communities in a eutrophic lake.Environmental factors explained a larger proportion of the variation in the conditionally rare and abundant subcommunity than for the abundant and the rare bacterial subcommunities. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering bacteria with different abundance patterns and DOC biodegradability when studying the interactions between DOM and bacteria in eutrophic lakes. 展开更多
